Today I have a real treat for you, as I have this wonderful wedding from wedding photography royalty Lisa Devlin. Lisa is well respected in the industry, so it’s always a treat when I get to feature her work and today’s wedding is no exception. It’s the London wedding of Arlene and David who decided to hold the reception in their favourite pub to keep things simple and un-fussy. They wanted a wedding that was more them, where they didn’t have to follow traditions they didn’t believe in so The Peasant Pub was the perfect location for them. The whole day is fun and relaxed with the most gorgeous dress from Kate Halfpenny.
Arlene and David were married on the 19th of July at St Etheldreda’s Roman Catholic Church, Ely Place, followed by a reception at The Peasant Pub, St John Street, London. ‘We wanted a London wedding close to family and friends. The church was beautiful with an amazing choir, and its location was close to our preferred reception venue The Peasant. We selected the Peasant as it is an old haunt of Dave’s, and we loved the relaxed atmosphere and the great team that work there. We also wanted to hire the whole venue which was possible. Keeping it local the wedding party and family guests stayed in the Rookery Hotel on Cowcross street which was fantastic, everyone loved the rooms and the staff were great. Mike Coleman from London black taxis organised our transport to the venue, they did a fantastic job getting everyone up to The Peasant. We had approximately 75 guests and we planned it in about 6 months.’
How they met
We met at work and have been together 4 years
The proposal
Dave proposed in Iceland, we went there for the weekend, it’s a place I had always wanted to visit.
How did you allocate your budget?
We decided that certain aspects of the wedding were more important to us than others. So we were less interested on spending money on favours (we didn’t have any) and various other decorations, we decided not to have flowers in the Church as it was beautiful enough without them. Also we both have busy jobs and so the less hassle the better!
How/Why did you choose your photographer?
We researched online for the photographer, and came across Lisa Devlin’s pictures. We loved the photos and the style.
The dress
My dress was by Kate Halfpenny, my shoes were Manolo Blahnik. I got the vintage brooches in my hair from Fur Coat no Knickers, and the bracelets I wore were from Beyond Retro. My earrings were a gift from Dave.
The suit and bridesmaids
Dave’s suit was a suit he had bought a while ago, it was Harris tweed from Thomas Farthing.
The bridesmaids wore dresses from Ted Baker and the flower girls wore Monsoon dresses.
Theme or colour scheme
No, there was no theme or colour scheme. For the bridesmaids and flower girls the focus was on getting them something that didn’t look like a standard ‘bridesmaid dress’, so they could wear it again. Otherwise we just picked things we liked.
The flowers
Flowers were by RebelRebel in Broadway Market. Mairead at RebelRebel did a fantastic job. I wanted flowers that were a mixture of what was in season and not too ‘manicured’ so with a slightly wild look. Mairead looked at the bridesmaids dresses and matched in their bouquets. I had seen the buttonholes on the internet so she made them up as per a picture I showed her. I knew I wanted a red bouquet (not roses), otherwise she created the table flowers and the large bouquet on the bar to be relaxed but beautiful.
The decoration
We did not have a lot of decorations. Flowers around the pub, bunting and some super sized balloons which were a big hit. Laura at Bubblegumballoons organised them for the day.
The food
The Peasant did fantastic food on the day. Guests chose from a menu (pre-selected by us). This allowed us to have a meat, fish and veg option to cater for all preferences. We had a small bites on arrival, then a 3 course meal. Dave brought a cheese round for later on where The Peasant also served some small snacks for anyone still peckish.
The wedding cake
My sister baked the wedding cake.
The entertainment
DJ Catfight played tunes after dinner late into the night
Buy or DIY your Stationery?
We bought our invites from yieldink, we also bought postcards as thank you cards. The nametags for guests seating we made ourselves using stamps and tape on luggage tags.
Dave made up the service booklets for the church himself.
Personal or handmade touches
Only the stationary aspects that we did ourselves.
Special moments or highlights
Highlights were the speeches, my Dads speech was very good, the first one he has had to give in our family.
Biggest surprise
Dave had found a great spot for us to take photos after the ceremony – Christchurch Greyfriars, a Church bombed in World War 1, now there are rose gardens where the pews were.
Advice for other couples
Don’t sweat the small stuff. It’s easy to get carried away with the details and spend a lot of cash doing what everyone else does. Just do whatever makes you happy – everyone is there to celebrate and have a good time.
