Hello you lovely lot and welcome along to another week! I hope you had a good weekend? I had a wonderful time as I was down in London for the Wedding Ideas Awards at the Tower Bridge Hotel, it was a totally fabulous night and I had blast! Well done to all the winners and to the team at wedding ideas for making it such a fabulous event.
To start the week off we head over to new York for this wonderful wedding shot by Claire Penn. Claire gives us some wonderful views of New York as well as the wedding of course! The lovely couple, Nicola and Sean are friends of Claire’s so she played Guest as well as Photographer. They were married on 28th September in New York City – The Destiny Yacht on the Hudson and The Kimberley Hotel, 145 East 50th Street. ‘We just love NYC, we’ve been many times and it was where Sean proposed in May 2011. We had 35 guests, we were really happy that so many of our friends and family were able to come and it took 10 months to plan’
‘This was a really unusual wedding to shoot, not just because it was the wedding of friends but of course because of the NYC backdrop. It was incredible! Nicola & Sean did such a great job organising everything in a relatively short space of time. They just wanted documentary style photos of the day and a couple of shots of them together – the Chrysler Building in the background was an added bonus though! On a professional level I found it challenging being a guest as well (under strict orders to enjoy myself!)… trying to catch up with old friends whilst wearing my work hat was tricky because I wanted to give my full attention to both. I’m sure other photographers may have been through the same thing. On a personal level however, it was one of my favourite weddings all year.’
How thy met
I moved with work from London into a shared house in Chester and our eyes met over the washing up! We have been together for 15 years but we’ve lived together for 16!
The proposal
I had a cold and Sean had been carrying the ring around for ages waiting for the right moment. It never came, he ran out of time so it was low key, in a dive bar in Greenwich Village!
Why did you choose your photographer?
Claire is a friend and she’s the best so it was a no brainer! We didn’t want anything formal, just really natural shots of the day and that’s what we got…. we love the photos.
The dress
And your accessories and shoes? My dress was from Monsoon, Karen Millen shoes and my beautiful headpiece and cuff bracelet were from Victoria Millesime.
Suit and bridesmaids
Just one bridesmaid, my niece and her dress was from Debenhams with a hair piece from Monsoon.
Food
All fabulous finger food… including the MOST delicious rare beef and horseradish crostinis.
Entertainment
New York itself (not too shabby!) and the brilliant house DJ at The Kimberley’s roof terrace bar.
Flowers
Dahlias, hydrangeas, ranunculus, stocks and freesias. In white, green, yellow and purple. For the tables on the yacht I wanted really bright, vibrant colours again but with more oranges and pinks thrown in.
Special Moments
The ceremony on the boat and my nephew walking me down the aisle, the stunning trip around the Statue of Liberty and the big post-wedding brunch the next day with everyone at Pershing Square cafe.
Advice
It’s a cliché but don’t worry about the small things it will all work out and if it doesn’t, no one will ever know any way! And keep it as simple as possible if you are celebrating abroad.

When I’m shooting a wedding I think it’s important to make sure the location is recorded properly – after all, it’s an important part of the day. You’ve nailed that one!
