Getting married is one of the most significant and celebratory events you can experience in adult life. It’s a collection of friends and family from all walks of life, all gathered to help see you through to the next stage of your own life with the one person you love the most in the world. And after that, you get to go on a honeymoon with them! How great is that! But the honeymoon can sometimes pose a bit of a problem when it comes to planning.
There are cost concerns, naturally, and particularly so if you’ve managed to splurge a bit on your dream wedding and reception. But there’s also the matter of planning a holiday experience fit to last a lifetime. Here, I’ll make the case for a city break honeymoon as a modern, flexible alternative to the traditional long-haul getaway. It’s a chance to feel the romance in a distinctly cosmopolitan way, through culture, food, boutique hotels, and memorable experiences — and without the need for long flights or long breaks from work.
First, let’s go over why you’d pick a city break at all. The usual instinct might be to find a coastal getaway, or a rural retreat that provides you the peace and quiet in which to enjoy your next life together as spouses. But such getaways can be expensive, not to mention difficult to organise when life gets hectic at home. Not everyone has the luxury of time and money to make such a long-haul, long-format honeymoon happen.
The romantic honeymoon city break is the ideal alternative to this older-fashioned form of holiday travel. It is an opportunity for the two of you to exercise spontaneity, and to do so in a way that doesn’t require hours and hours of international travel. Urban getaways are concentrated shots of cultural exploration and vibrant new experiences – at least, if you plan them right.
The most important part of your honeymoon planning is, unavoidably, the destination. City breaks give you an opportunity to cut down massively on transport costs, especially if you’re happy with staying relatively close via a European getaway. Luckily for you and your spouse, Europe is home to some of the most romantic cities on the planet.
Paris is an obvious choice for a romantic honeymoon city break, given its river cruises, city sights and impeccable cuisine culture. Travelling a little further, though, gets you to Barcelona – a coastal city with some of the most incredible nightlife. Its urban beaches are a delight, its Old Town is a wonder, and its bars are home to the best cocktails you’ve ever tasted. For other amazing City break locations, look at Rome, Berlin or even Lisbon.
This brings us, naturally, to the meat of your honeymoon: the experiences. How do you make a city break feel like a honeymoon? Well, you do so with touches of luxury. Plumping for a slightly more expensive hotel makes so much more sense in the long run, when you get room service and preferential treatment – especially if you’re saving money on travel. Pair this with regular late-night dining sessions, the seeking-out of rooftop cocktails bars and the inevitable restorative spa days, and you have the makings of an unforgettable honeymoon.
