Anna and Tyler’s Rustic Blue and Grey ‘Cow Shed’ Wedding in Scotland by Matt Sim

Happy Friday everyone and how are you today? Hasn’t this week whizzed by? It feels like it’s only just gone past Monday and it’s the weekend again tomorrow! Have you anything exciting planned? Any wedding planning jobs that are top of your list this weekend? Or maybe you’re attending a wedding, or even getting married yourself? My weekend will be spent at a 4 year olds birthday party, and then over eating with good friends on Sunday. Before that though we have today’s gorgeous wedding from Scotland. Anna is from Scotland and Tyler is Canadian, where they both currently live, so their wedding location really meant a lot to them. It is filled with lots of pretty rustic elements, as well as some amazing styling and some Fab DIY projects in the cake, flowers and stationery. Big thanks to Matt Sim for the images.

Perfect in every way. Beautiful and Rustic.

Anna and Tyler were married on 14th October 2017 at The Cow Shed, Crail in Scotland. ‘We always knew we wanted to get married in Scotland. (We both currently live in Canada and Tyler is Canadian) We wanted a rustic wedding, but in a location that was meaningful. Crail is very close to where I grew up, and just a beautiful setting in general. We had 75 guests and it took one year to plan’

How they met
We met at a mutual friend’s party. Neither of us were meant to be going that evening so we like to think it was fate. We met in June 2013, Started dating, never looked back.

The proposal
At Thanksgiving with all the family, at the dinner table. Someone questioned us about having children, someone else commented that we have to be married first, at which point Tyler pulled out the ring.

How did you allocate your budget?
We didn’t allocate our budget to start. We researched how much things cost and put a (mostly) realistic budget together. We then decided whether we could afford everything we wanted. Mostly, and luckily, we could.

Where did you splurge and where did you save?
I wouldn’t say we splurged massively in any area. But a live band, and plated dinner service (two quite costly items) were things we probably didn’t NEED, but certainly wanted. The venue was the biggest expense but was absolutely worth it. We saved massively with stationary, flowers and the cake. My mum baked the cake, and a family friend designed our invites. The flowers were from a wholesale, and neighbours gardens, put together by ourselves.

How did you choose your photographer?
I am very proud to call our photographer a friend. Matt Sim. He is extremely talented, especially at weddings, but much more also. He captured everything we wanted and more, and we absolutely love all the photos from the day.

The dress
My dress designer was “Allure”. Shoes were just New look! Jewellery was minimal and consisted of a Necklace Ty had given me, and a bracelet my best friend gave me when I was a bridesmaid for her.

The suit and bridesmaids
Kilt was from McColls, Broughty Ferry and the Bridesmaids were in Marks and Spencers!

Theme or colour scheme
General rustic theme, with Blue and Grey throughout.

Flowers
Lots of Baby’s breath. This, along with Scottish Thistles were the only flowers we purchased. The rest were wild flowers from the neighbours!

Decoration
We used “Little white cow” company to come and kit the venue out with props like candles, greenery, blankets, and vintage furniture. They were very good. Virginias Vintage Hire did the tables and chairs which were perfect for the venue. Apart from the above, it was mason jars with flowers and fairy lights. Very simplistic.

Food
Melon and prosciutto salad. Choice of Lamb or Salmon. Hazelnut roulade.

Wedding cake
My mum made it. It was fabulous! Suited the venue perfectly. It was a naked cake with fresh fruit decoration

Entertainment
Live Ceilidh band (Jim Jam Ceilidh Band) and finished with a disco section.

Who supplied the stationery?
It was designed by a family friend (Crail Gallery – Susie Sim), and printed and put together ourselves on our home printer!

Personal touches
Susie (above) had designed a vignette of a maple leaf and a thistle which we used throughout the venue and was personal to Ty and I. We also had carnival games! During the ceremony we also did a Tying the Knot ritual and a Drinking from the Quaich ritual.

Special moments
Anna’s mum’s Speech was incredible. Very Funny and moving. The ceremony itself was beautiful.

Advice for other couples
Once the day begins… nothing really matters. My dress was a little creased as I forgot to take the train down… I couldn’t have cared less.. I was just so happy. So don’t let the small things bring you down. As long as you get to marry the guy standing at the end of the aisle, nothing else matters.

Biggest surprise
I am a bit of a control freak so there were no surprises really. The biggest surprise was how good all the Canadians were at Ceilidh Dancing.

Weddings are great fun. They never fail to make me smile and laugh all day long, so I try my hardest to show that through my work. I prefer a natural and candid approach. I love couples who choose to have fun with their wedding over endless traditions and box ticking. Letting your character shine through is the most important thing and it makes for awesome photographs: your wedding day is all about YOU.
