Charlotte and Steven’s Hessian and Gingham Gloucestershire Barn Wedding by Lewis Fackrell

Happy Friday everyone, I am SO happy it’s nearly the weekend, what about you? It’s been a good week but super busy, so I am looking forward to a bit of free time over the weekend, to catch up with my gorgeous family and friends. I’d also like to take the chance to wish my lovely blogging assistant Laura a fond farewell as she moves onto bigger things. Laura has been an amazing asset to the blog and she will be greatly missed.
Today I have this gorgeous Gloucestershire Barn Wedding for you, courtesy of Lewis Fackrell who has done a wonderful job of capturing this bright and cheerful barn wedding. Charlotte and Steven knew they wanted to hold their wedding ceremony outside and to incorporate the countryside and this they did perfectly. With meadow flowers, hessian, gingham, wooden slabs and lots of colour, this wedding is the perfect way to round off a Friday! Have a good one everyone.

Our wedding orientated around are friends and family. It that was full of colour, countryside, nature and celebrated us as human beings and our relationship.

Charlotte and Steven were married on the 29th July 2017 at Jenners Barn, Whelford in Gloucestershire. The legal ceremony was carried out in jeans at Stroud Registry office a few days earlier. ‘We were never sure what kind of ‘theme’ we wanted, we just knew we wanted a quiet, countryside and peaceful wedding. We both grew up in the countryside and knew we definitely wanted to have the ceremony in a field! We had around 100 guests and the wedding took about a year to plan.’

How they met
We met at a mutual friend’s birthday party in Bristol. We’ve been together seven years in February.

The Proposal
Steve had been secretly planning it for a long time, he had contacted a bespoke ring maker in Bath and had personally designed the ring. However, they didn’t quite stick to Steve’s timings as he was hoping to have the ring ready to take on our Christmas trip to Bruges. On the Friday before we caught the ferry on the Saturday Steve visited the jewellers to pick up the ring, however, it was not ready! In fact, it wasn’t even started! Steve spent the whole day in Bath and eventually went back at closing time to ask how the ring was progressing. The jeweller unfortunately hadn’t estimated the intricacy of the design and was struggling to finish…but Steve still refused to leave!  Eventually the jeweller agreed to come over to our house and drop it off when it was finished!
Later, when enjoying a relaxing and romantic Christmas trip in Bruges, Steve suggested a fancy meal. Eventually and with rumbling tummies, we wandered down a side street that overlooked the river. As we were looking at the beautiful scene, Steve said “is the most beautiful place you’ve seen?”
“It’s beautiful, I think the top of the Rockefeller in New York is better!!” I replied.
“What would make is better?” Steve said, as I was looking down the river in the opposite direction.
“Johnny Depp!” I said, whilst turning to face Steve, who was now down on his knee with an open ring box!

How did you allocate your budget?
Spreadsheets, spreadsheets, spreadsheets! We wanted a talented, quality photographer so were willing to spend on this! Everything else was about finding and searching until we found the right deal that stuck to our budget.

Where did you splurge and where did you save?
We splurged on the honeymoon and the ring.

Why did you choose your photographer?
Our choice of photographer was initially based on his online portfolio. However, when we had are first meeting we both completely fell in love with him! He was friendly, welcoming and totally understood our vision. He was so excited about our ideas and planning that he gave us total confidence in his skills and talent!

The Dress
I initially bought my dress from David’s Bridal in Birmingham. It was a budget dress, but I spent money on having it altered and making it my own.

The Suit and Bridesmaids
The suit was from Slaters. The bridesmaids’ dresses were in the sale from ASOS but again, I spent money having them altered to make them echo the style of my dress. This stemmed from my sister falling pregnant after I’d bought the bridesmaid dresses so hers needed more altering!! Especially when she was later given a due date of 29.7.17!!

Theme or Colour Scheme
Not really, just colourful and the idea of meadow flowers was what we worked towards!

Flowers
My mum was responsible for all the flowers. Again, the idea of picking wild flowers and meadow flowers was what we worked towards. Some of our guests said ‘Hardy-esque!’

Decoration
We used wooden tree slices, dried flowers, sweet peas from my mum and step-dad’s garden, lace/hessian/yellow gingham bunting, dried petals, lanterns and old vintage bottles.

Food
Canapés and fizz straight after the ceremony. Then, a sharing freshly cooked BBQ platter. After this, we served the Victoria sponge wedding cake with crème fraiche and summer berries.

Wedding Cake
Made by my very talented cousin. It was a naked, Victoria sponge, three tiered cake. It had butter cream and raspberry jam in the middle.

Who supplied the stationery?
Designed by Steve.

Personal Touches
We had a humanist ceremony, which meant the ceremony was completely bespoke and written for us, by our celebrant. Steve and I both wrote 5 promises and our own vows. Additionally, our guests’ “name places” were individual photos from the past of us with each guest. Steve and I wrote personal messages to each guest explaining what it meant to us to have them there!

Special Moments or Highlights
Reading our personal vows, having the ceremony outside and seeing our guests having fun.

Advice for Other Couples
Be relentless in your communication with suppliers, be stubborn in your decision making and stick to your strengths! Make decisions and choices on what you want…not what you think everyone else wants! When it seems too much, ask your family and friends for help…it will surprise you how much they want to do it! On the day: take moments throughout the day together to just enjoy it!

Biggest Surprise
The fact that we didn’t get drunk…no matter how hard we tried!

The photography style I choose to adopt for my wedding photography is that of a relaxed, creative and totally natural one while totally having fun the same time! I want my couples to have the best of fun and not feel as though their wedding is a photoshoot. As a South Wales wedding photographer I get to to photograph weddings close to the coast, in the vale and mountains, certainly one of the best places to be!
