Thomas and Christien’s Rural and Romantic Rustic Menorca Wedding by David Luque

Today I am taking you off to beautiful Menorca for this gorgeous Spanish wedding. Its a pretty wedding, with a really laid back vibe, that takes place all in one venue. This charming Finca holds the outdoor ceremony, as well as the outdoor reception. With rustic detailing, as well as delicious looking rustic food, this wedding will have you wanting to jet off on holiday straight away. The location, the weather, the decoration, the music, the food…everything fitted together. It was a perfect day on which we felt so much love and happiness.

Christien and Thomas were married on the 28th June 2016 at Finca Llucalari Nou, Menorca. ‘We wanted to get married in a special, typical Spanish place without all the tourism. Menorca is still very authentic with a lot of nature and beautiful bays. Most of our guests came to spend a couple of days at the island, we wanted them to know a place most people normally don´t choose to visit. It worked out well, each one of them fell in love with Menorca. We invited only our closest family and friends, 42 persons in total. The wedding planning took about 8 months, the most difficult thing was to find the location.’

How they met
Thomas came from Spain to Holland to work on a stable of sport horses. Christien’s horse was stabled there, so that´s where we met. We have been 8 years together.

The Proposal
First, there was no proposal. We already were thinking of getting married for a while so one day we went out and just decided to do it. Indeed, not very romantic, so thought Thomas. He called a friend of his, a designer, and asked him to make a painting where he incorporated some special moments we experienced during our first 8 years. One day I came home and there it was: a big and beautiful painting! So I finally got my proposal.

How did you allocate your budget?
When we started to organize the wedding we didn’t have a maximum budget because we had no idea of the costs. After a while we discovered that sometimes the companies double the price just because it’s a wedding. So our strategy was to divide all the amounts in 42, the number of guests. That helped us to put everything in perspective so we didn’t pay too much.

Where did you splurge and where did you save?
Because the pictures are everything that will remain, we didn´t want to cut down on the photographer. Also the catering was fundamental. To save some money I made some decoration elements by myself. Besides, we are lucky to have a very musically family so there was live music for free.

Why did you choose your photographer?
After days (or weeks) of searching I must have seen the portfolio of every single photographer in Spain. For us it was clear, we loved the pictures of David from the beginning.

The Dress
The dress is from Vertize Gala. I found the shoes accidentally on the internet, simple sandals that I cheered up with some jewels of “yourbarefootsandals.com”. I wore a beautiful chain of Swarovski and an old diamond bracelet from my mother.

The Suit
Thomas wanted to wear something comfortable: a suit from Zara, a shirt of Massetti and shoes from Fluchos.

Theme or Colour Scheme
We wanted to create a rural but romantic atmosphere so we kept that theme in mind for the decoration.

Flowers
The bridal bouquet was white so we used white flowers. Mainly margerites.

Decoration
In general, the location didn’t need a lot of decoration. There already was so much atmosphere. We used atmospheric lighting, candles, flowers… After the ceremony, the guests threw rose leafs so I made some holders of kraft-paper, there was a “signpost” with the directions of the ceremony, bar etc.

Food
We wanted the guests to move and talk with everybody during dinner so there was a buffet with a typical Spanish rise dish, meat and vegetables from the barbecue, summer salads, bread and much more.

Wedding Cake
There was a mini-cake for every person as dessert.

Entertainment
We had our own family-band who played live-music and some family members organized a very funny quiz about our lives.

Personal Touches
The ceremony was performed by Christien´s dad and Thomas´ mom, so it was a very personal, emotional and funny moment.
There was one big table for all of us. Instead of a table planner we prepared cards with a baby or child-picture of every guest on their seat (without there knowing). So everybody had to look for his place by recognizing him/herself.
We also prepared all the guests some presents: before the wedding the ladies received a typical Spanish fan and the gents a nice hat for the heat. Afterwards we gave them some seeds of special trees.

Special Moments or Highlights
The most special moment was the ceremony because of the personal stories of our parents and the beautiful music composed and played by Thomas´ father. The whole day is a chain of highlights: the quiz, dancing, singing and just having fun with all the people we love the most.

Advice for Other Couples
We searched for a catering company who took care of the whole organisation like furniture, food, decoration etc. so we could focus on the details. It supposes to be one of the most beautiful days of your live, enjoy the preparations as well! It would be a pity to ruin the fun with stress.

Biggest Surprise
A big surprise/satisfaction for us was to see all the guests enjoying so much and having so much fun. Several guests said that it was the most beautiful wedding they attended to.
