Bree and Mitch’s Handmade Backyard Melbourne Wedding By On Three Photography

It’s Friday, yay!! I am so excited as my mum is coming to stay today as it’s Dexter’s birthday at the weekend. We are having a big party for him, which I can’t wait for. I’ve gone from planning weddings to planning toddlers birthday parties! It’s going to be a great day.
We are finishing off the week with this sun drenched backyard Melbourne wedding. This is the third backyard wedding we have had on the blog this week, a trend that seems to be on the up! Bree and Mitch decided on a backyard wedding to suit their laid back nature, and with the beach right on the doorstep why not. This wedding is the perfect way to end the week, chilled out, relaxed and full of smiles. Thanks to Erica from On Three Wedding Photography.

‘The day was very relaxed and intimate with a vintage feel. It was truly the most ideal Summer wedding!’

Bree and Mitch were married on 1st July 2015 at Bree’s Parents House – Aspendale. ‘Mitch and I are both very laid back people, so it seemed like a given that we have a backyard wedding. We’re also both from Aspendale (a small country town just outside of Melbourne) so we really liked the idea of going back to our home town for the wedding. We’ve just had so many memories together sitting in my parent’s backyard during warm nights after school so there was no better place than that same backyard to commemorate what we started over 10 years ago. We had about 50-60 guests and wedding planning took approximately 10 months.

How they met
Mitch and I are high school sweethearts. He was in the year above me, and to say that I had a crush on him was an understatement. I’d always see him around school (and being the awkward 15-year-old that I was) I’d always just stare from afar and be completely unable to utter a coherent sentence, at least that was until he spoke to me after school one day and we didn’t stop talking until we were home.

The Proposal
The proposal could not have gone more perfectly. Mitch and I took a daytrip to a winery in the Yarra Valley (think rolling green hills, vineyards and stunning sunsets) and we hopped around a couple of the well-known wineries. We were at dinner at one of the most beautiful restaurants I’ve ever eaten at, when he got down on one knee and surprised me just after the main course.

How did you allocate your budget
Honestly, most of our budget would have gone to the photographer (which was completely worth it.) Because we had the wedding at home, we saved so much money! We sourced a lot of our décor from vintage stores and our families helped prepare a lot of the food. Next would have been the guys and my bridesmaids garments and the band. My dress also would have been one of the most expensive items, but I can’t help it. I just adore the pieces from Grace Loves Lace!

How did you choose your photographer
OnThree are so fantastic at capturing natural images! We didn’t want anything too posed. They’re also amazing at working with lighting which you can see from the beach photos.

The Stationery
Adorn Invitations

Personal or Handmade Touches
I actually created most of the décor myself. We created these hanging love hearts out of newspaper, several chalkboards, I sourced cute little teacups and jars from vintage shops, I found an old suitcase and converted it into a wishing well, and created a makeshift bar! (my favourite part)

Special Moments
Definitely the dancing at the end of the night. It was so amazing seeing all of my loved ones together getting down on the dance floor!

Advice to other couples
Honestly, don’t feel like you have to spend a fortune to have the most magical day of your life! Be creative and inject some of your own personality into some elements.

Biggest surprise
The speeches! They still ring tears to my eyes when I think of them.
