More about Josh

As you’ve probably gathered by now, my name is Joshua Wyborn, but you can call me Josh now we’ve got to know each other a little. I’m a creative wedding photographer based in Carlisle, Cumbria, although that wasn’t my intention. The Cumbria bit, not the photographer bit. I came here in 2009 to study photography at The University of Cumbria and was so captivated by the awe-inspiring beauty of the Lake District that I decided to make it my home. While studying I learnt the art of being an F-stop ninja from the BBC as a photojournalist. I turned to weddings after a colleague of mine asked me to photograph his wedding. I won’t lie, I was terrified but honoured and as they say, the rest is history…

How long have you been taking photos for?
I’ve been taking photos for a long time; ever since I was knee-high to a tripod and got my shutter finger on my father’s camera. I’m a bit taller now, 6’5”, which gives me a unique perspective on things.

Where are you based?
Carlisle Cumbria.

How far will you travel for a wedding?
Honestly happy to travel anywhere!

How would you describe your style?
My style is a mix of shoot from the hip, with some fly on the wall. Plus an added dash of well-planned creative fun awesomeness… Smoke grenade or fire anyone?!

What is your favorite bit of technical kit?
My brain. I change what I do and how I do it all the time. I m not a fan of doing the same thing twice. Its all about thinking not he spot and doing tings by a new angle. Might mean lighting differently or trying something crazy… I love my pixelstick (massive stick of lights I can run around with) but I have only used that once on a live wedding so far. Other times have been smoke bombs. mirrors… prisms… all sorts of gizmos

What makes you different to your competitors?
Tough one. I like to think i’m completely bespoke to my customers. It about you not me! For example I don’t even brand my USB or Albums like many others do! I hate that! Its all about the couple. Not me.

What do you enjoy most about your job?
Making people happy. Getting a phone call or email saying thank you for a certain photograph of a family member who has now passed away honestly brings the reality of it all down to the ground. sometimes wedding photographers think they’re rockstars. We’re not.

What is your biggest achievement so far?
Personally? My best mate and I drove from John O’Groats to lands end in one mad drive. Taking a photograph of dawn in john o’groats and a photograph of sunset in lands end… we beat the sun by 1.5 hours!.15.5 hours driving…. that has to be up there on my list…
Business? Joining fearless photographers was fairly amazing. Also seeing how quickly my company has grown has been truly humbling.

What sort of couple do you think you attract?
Probably artsy fun yet chilled out people. It ranges from factory workers to lawyers. Teachers to hairdressers. As long as there is love… that’s all that matters… so to answer I guess… couples in love

Which celeb would you like to photograph?
Kelis – So I can Sing Milkshake at the top of my lungs!
Oh was this a real question? hmm…. Bear Gyrlls… or Ewan Mcgregor!

Who is your favorite photographer and why?
My real true love was landscape photography to start off with. My inspiration was an amazing man called Cole Thompson. Honestly incredible monotone work. I nearly went to America to live and work with him for a year, but instead chose Uni…

What in your opinion makes the perfect photo?
The moment. At the end of the day we record moments in time. While we can make this go to the ‘nth’ degree…. it all boils down to The Moment. Capturing the emotion atmosphere and life of it all.

What advice would you give couples when choosing their wedding photographer?
I would break it down into 5 sections. this can go into more detail but these should keep you ok!
STYLE – As a couple, sit down and decide what kind of images you will want from the day. For example would you like it to be formal? Or more of a freestyle candid approach where all the little details are captured? Would you like to have a classic timeless feel, or a bold, edgey, ultra modern look? Once you have decided on a look you like and believe it will suit you, that will help refine your search from the get go. Check out more than just a few images, make sure you see at least 3 whole weddings through the day as it develops in photos, it will show you how reliable the photographer is and how they work.
PERSONALITY – A photographer’s personality is a huge part of the day. How many weddings have you been to where the photographer was so demanding that it put everyone off? Especially the now mother in-law? Emails are great, and so are phone calls, but nothing is better than meeting your photographer in person or even Skype as I do with my long distance clients. Set up a time to have a coffee and see them face to face. You will know if they are right for you just after a short face to face chat. Its also a great time to see there photography first hand in prints or albums. Ask to see examples of final products so you know what quality to expect.
WORD OF MOUTH – A lot of my work has come through from recommendations from family or friends of previous weddings. Word of mouth travels, and so does the reputation of the photographer. Ask friends or family who have been married what they liked or didn’t about their wedding photographer, and use that as research. That may even bring up questions to ask your potential photographer in person or by email. I have even found my name being mentioned on Facebook wedding groups (thankfully all good) ask around and see what others think about the photographers work as well. While the wedding day is for the both of you to do what you like, its always good to hear others opinions.
EXPERIENCE – Experience plays a huge part in choosing your photographer. An experienced photographer will sometimes become the wedding co-ordinator, master of ceremonies, or even children’s entertainer. At the end of the day, you wont have done the ‘wedding thing’ as often as us who do it several times a month. I have even helped groomsmen write speeches while photographing them getting ready in the morning. It’s good to find out how and why they started photography, and how long they have been doing it for.  Also check that they have moved with the times and are not static in their mindset or work, Unless you like that kinda thing…
PRICE – People always ask me why wedding photographers charge what they do. Your wedding photographer will be working on your wedding for easily a week, maybe more. Paying for travel, accommodation, camera kit, insurance, website up-keep, etc. is all factored into the total cost. Price can often be a deciding factor for a lot of brides and grooms, and although it is a vital element, it should not be the basis for your decision. High-end prices do not always guarantee the highest quality but likewise, reasonable pricing does not always depict low quality. A photographer should be open about their pricing structures, and in turn you should be clear on your budget. Neither one of you wants to waste any time so a clear dialogue right from the beginning will resolve this. Your photographer should offer a variety of packages to suit all and should always be flexible with pricing and what is included within each package. Your photographer is providing a service and each couple will have different expectations and requirements so do make sure that you pick a  photographer that can tailor make a package to suit your needs.

Can you give me some information on your pricing structure?
After becoming a groom-to-be myself, I now understand how manic weddings really are. This made me re-think my business and how I work with my clients. My work is based around you, the couple. I am completely bespoke to you and your needs. I have developed these packages to help you find the option that is best for you. As I travel out for most of my weddings, I charge flights/travel, lodging and possibly a rental car, as required, all separately. You will receive a quote based on the location of your wedding. You can pay your wedding off by monthly direct debits to make it more manageable or, if you wish, you can pay the lump sum in full. Paying monthly has allowed my clients to go all out in a manageable way. To remain completely bespoke to your needs my packages are done by the hour.  with additional hours available to add. Second photographers and albums also. You can also enjoy a couples shoot at a discounted rate when booking a wedding!

What is your ideal way to spend a day off?
Its rare I take a day off, but I’m getting better at it! When I’m not tinkering with my website or thinking of how I can make my service better for my customers I quite like to go and play in my extended back garden I like to call the lake district. Either out and about with my camera taking landscape photographs. Or hiking a fell for a few hours. Love fresh air me!

What can you never leave the house without?
The standard 3 pat check for sure! phone? keys? wallet? plus headphones! I love my music. In fact I used to be a sound engineer….

Who would be your 5 dream dinner guests dead or alive?
Bear Gyrlls, Guy Martin, Ansel Adams, Mark Rothko, David Gilmour

What would you do if you won the lottery?
Probably Give a lot of it away! I mean.. I wouldn’t know what to do with it all! Buy a fell and build a house in it? Like a hobbit house but Josh sized? A few nice motorbikes and cars… ? See my friends and family well and rest either start a charity or give it away to several!

If you weren’t running your business, what would you be doing?
Probably go back to working as a sound engineer for west end shows, gigs and festivals!
