To get a males perspective on this collection I asked my husband Nik to take a look at the watch collection for me. Here’s what he thought……..spoiler alert, he loved them!

As an avid collector of watches, I am always on the look out for new and interesting pieces. My current collection stands at 9, ranging from entry level Casio to Rolex Submariner and all sorts in-between. Like most enthusiasts, I am constantly on the aggregator apps, watch review sites, YouTube, Reddit and blogs – dreaming of being able to order a piece unique from Vacheron or AP or Patek! But actually, building more realistic goals in the growing microbrand space.

And so, to Botanica. On a recent trip to Thailand, I saw stalls in markets selling wooden watches and really liked the idea of adding something unique and not, how do I say delicately, reproduction………. – but given I had already packed 3 watches, thought better of pushing my luck! Back in the UK, I came across the Botanica website. And what a find it was. I love chronographs and have a couple already so whilst they look great, I didn’t have space for one this time around. So I opted for the Plato – I like a splash of colour and the mixture of the wood grain face, blue chamber ring and small seconds dial really pop! As each dial is natural, each one will be individual and I love the Botanica philosophy of planting a tree for every watch sold, replenishing the materials used and giving back to nature. Sustainability is something very close to my heart, making this decision very easy!

The online ordering process was simple and delivery was swift. The watch arrived in a nice wooden box with brass effect clasp, sat on a hessian pillow. Another nice touch is a cork insert confirming that “This product plants one tree” with a “Time for Change” and the Botanica Collective website. As this is removable, I am now using as my coaster at my desk!

To the watch itself. I am usually in the 38mm to 42mm range of sizing and this sits perfectly at 41mm and wears accordingly. The hour markers on the brushed metal blue chamber ring are baton shaped and easily readable. The small seconds sits in the lower half of the face toward 6 o’clock, has a sunburst effect with markings at 60, 15, 30, 45 and markers between – longer at the 5-second intervals. The strap gives the feeling of brushed suede and is quick release, allowing me to try other straps from my collection – another bonus to keeping the Plato fresh and individual. Having worn the watch a couple of times in the first week, I am very pleased with my choice and have had some great comments so far and the best of all came from my 11-year-old son who is just starting on his watch collecting journey, having bought his second one this last week:
“Wow, that is mad cool! Can I wear that at weekends and when we go out please?!”
