Emily and Sam’s Colourful Whimsical Wedding Day in Kansas by Brooke Buck Photography

Happy Friday everyone, I hope you are all excited for the weekend, I know I am! I have ha a great week so far, what with Dexter’s birthday on Wednesday. This weekend the birthday celebrations continue as he is having his best mate over for a sleepover, we are taking them go karting, then crazy golf and then dinner. Sunday is chilled day at the cinema. Next weekend we are all off to London for the last part of his birthday celebrations, he sure is a lucky boy! To finish off the week I have the gorgeous wedding of Emily and Sam who were married on 29th October 2022 at Holton 4-H Building, Holton, Kansas. The whole day is a magical mix of Boho decoration and colourful flowers, all create by Emily’s mother with help from all the friends and family. A wonderful day, captured perfectly by Brooke Buck Photography

Not only did Emily look like a princess, but the movement that the dress provided was a photography dream. It was a wonderful celebration with their closest friends and families in Emily’s hometown. Emily and her mom sourced some gorgeous vintage glassware and decor for the reception space. Sam and his groomsmen rocked khaki suits and together the bride and groom had the largest wedding party we have ever seen!

I truly am drawn to so many different decor styles and feel we incorporated a lot into our wedding day. Our colours consisted of mauves, dusty blue, maroon, sage green, and many more. Colour always catches my eye more than neutral and I think that was really reflective in our theme. Our ceremony was held in the church I grew up in which was very special to me. Having our ceremony in the church in front of God and our friends and family was very important for us.

The proposal
Sam and I met in 2018 through mutual friends. Ironically enough, we were both at the same engagement party. We didn’t speak there, but it didn’t take long for our friends to get the ball rolling on setting us up and Sam texted me later on that same evening. The rest is history. The proposal happened on October 23, 2021 in the backyard of our first little rental home together. It was completely unexpected, romantic, and so incredibly sweet.

Outfits
One thing Sam and I agreed on from the beginning is that we wanted our wedding to be different in ways than other weddings we have been to. He has many suits from weddings he has been a groomsman, but none in the colour we went for, which is what drew us to it. I just knew I wanted my dress to be “different” and it took me all of 10 seconds of trying it on for me to know it was the one. It was the 4th dress I tried on at Bride KC and I was sold.  My hair and makeup were done by Keely Fink and Anna Capra at Collab KC. I sent some inspiration photos for my hair, but ultimately gave them creative freedom. They are hair and makeup EXPERTS and I had full faith they would make me the most stunning I’ve ever been, and they sure did.

Decoration
My mom has a much more creative eye than me. I gave her ideas and direction and she ran with it for the decor. Almost all of it was done by her and other members of our family and friends. I am not a neutral coloured kind of girl. I love all sorts of colour and I think our decor really reflected that! ACA Event Rental in Topeka, KS provided tables, linens, candlesticks, and other decor that really brought our vision completely together. We couldn’t have done it without them and their help!

Flowers
Our floral arrangements are one of the most treasured parts of our day. My mom was a florist for my entire childhood and it had always been my dream for her to do my wedding flowers. She designed everything besides the bridesmaids bouquets and I couldn’t have dreamt up more beautiful flowers. My bouquet was PERFECTION. We used all silks and dried flowers.

Personal touches
Sam’s one request for the wedding was live music for the reception. I knew immediately I had to get my favourite cover band I saw many, many times while at Kansas State in Manhattan, KS, Mikey Needleman Sam and I both agree that having them there was one of our very favourite parts of the wedding.

Advice for other couples
It is your day. Not anyone else’s. Make sure that you do whatever makes you both happy as a couple. This day will only happen once so make sure you take it all in. It can be overwhelming, but remember that whatever happens that day was meant to happen and you will look back at it all as absolute perfection!
