Frida Kahlo Inspired Elopement Styled Shoot with Blue the Parrot

I have a real treat for you today with this STUNNING styled shoot! It really is quite breathtaking! Frida Kahlo, the well known Mexican painter, is the inspiration behind this shoot and it brings with it as much colour, passion and fun as her work did. JATC Weddings and Events put together the concept for the shoot, while Matt + Lena Photography were there to capture it in all it’s photographic glory. For me there are two stars of the show, the beautiful Oksana Mukha red dress which is just amazing and then Blue the parrot, who really does steal the show! Such colour, fun and amazing use of the Portuguese sunshine, creating a warmth and glow to the images.

Photographed at Casa Fuzetta, an intimate wedding venue and boutique hotel in Olhao, Algarve, Portugal. The shoot took place in October 2020. It was amazing working with this creative team! Being a fan of Frida Kahlo and her work, we were so excited to shoot this Elopement inspired by the artist and a colourful Mexican aesthetic.

Jeremy from Jats Events came up with the initial concept for the shoot. Our bride, Veronica, wore a stunning red wedding gown, such a unique look for a bold bride. Perfectly paired with the most elegant yellow Louboutin shoes for contrast and extra colour pop. The beautifully crafted jewellery statement pieces from Portugal Jewels were an essential addition to complete the look. Veronica perfectly embodies Frida Khalo, thanks to the spectacular work of Sharon Philipps, our makeup artist and Thomas Legendarme, our hairdresser. Veronica was wonderfully transformed into Frida with the addition of a lush and colourful floral crown.
We hope the shoot inspires future brides, whether they are planning a wedding or an elopement, to really have fun with their day and encourage them to pursue a style that brings out their own uniqueness.

The location was just magic. The Algarve is an amazing destination, with so much sunshine and a relaxed vibe. We shot at the beautiful and charming Casa Fuzetta. An intimate wedding venue and boutique design hotel. The rooftop provided a stunning backdrop at sunset overlooking the white washed buildings of Olhao in the Algarve, Portugal. It was the ideal place for the realisation of this project where our florist, Julie Pinto, was able to create colourful floral arrangement and table design influenced by the flora in Frida’s paintings but also complementing the natural aesthetic of Casa Fuzetta.

Our wonderful couple, Veronica & Alexander, embraced the spirit of the shoot and we had an amazing time photographing the pair. And of course Blue, the parrot who brought so much fun and excitement to the set! Frida was often depicted in her self portraits with various animals as well as a beautiful parrot. It was a way to add some fun and a quirky parallel to the artist by having Blue join in for a few portraits.
