Today’s wedding is a wonderful fusion of Hindu and English traditions. Emily and Gopi chose their traditional English Kent Barn Wedding after holding two separate weddings, one in Malaysia and one in Australia. Wanting to celebrate Emily’s English culture they chose a beautiful barn venue and left it to Emily’s mum to plan most of it, as they lived on the other side of the world. With the Hindu ceremony already haven taken place in Malaysia, it meant that Emily could have her barn wedding with a hint of the Hindu culture in the decor. A beautiful day captured perfectly by Denise from One Love Pictures.
Emily and Gopi were married on 19th September 2016 at Owl’s Castle Barn, Culverstone, Meopham, Kent. ‘This was our third wedding celebration and we wanted a very English feeling compared to the Malaysian Hindu wedding and the Australian Registry Office service. We were looking for a traditional barn with lots of character and Owl’s Castle was perfect. The barn is located close to Emily’s family home and is full of character and charm which appealed to Gopi as he interested in the history and age of the location. We had a total of 80 guests and it took 1 year to plan.’
How they met
We met playing hockey for Penang Sports Club in Penang, Malaysia where Emily was teaching in a school there.
The Proposal
Gopi proposed on a romantic beach in Langkawi, Malaysia after dinner and whilst listening to the sound of the waves and watching the sunset.
How did you allocate your budget
As we had three weddings to finance Emily’s parents were incredibly generous in arranging this English celebration.
Where did you splurge and where did you save
We prioritised good food and drink as well as this perfect venue. We saved by sourcing most items ourselves with the help of friends and family. The decorations and flowers were found locally and created by Emily’s Mum and friends as Emily and Gopi do not live in the UK and only arrived one week before the wedding.
How did you choose your photographer
Denise (OneLove Pictures) was recommended by a family friend and was absolutely fabulous.
The Dress
Emily’s dress was from Coast and shoes from Hobbs
The Suit and Bridesmaids
Gopi’s suit was a traditional Indian Jippa bought in Penang and originally worn for the evening celebration of the Hindu wedding
Theme or Colour Scheme
The theme was really to bring together the best of the English countryside together with some Indian traditions
Flowers
The flowers were mostly seasonal country garden flowers
Decoration
Flowers, hops, sarees, lanterns and candles
Food
Hog roast with a selection of salads, followed by brownie cakes with fruit
Wedding Cake
The wedding cake was a cake of assorted cheeses decorated with fruits
Entertainment
A local guitarist played before, during and after the ceremony while drinks and canapés were served and in the evening there was a DJ
The Stationery
All from www.notonthehighstreet.com
Personal or Handmade Touches
Most of the decorations and touches were completed by Emily’s mother
Special Moments
The entrance of one of the resident cats into the ceremony, the beautiful afternoon sun, sipping Prosecco and enjoying the heritage of the outdoor venue. The wonderful food, locally brewed ale, the best man’s speech and the company of our amazing family and friends.
Advice to other couples
My tip would be to have an amazing Mother who did most of it for you!!!!
Biggest surprise
Same as the Highlights I guess, the entrance of the cat and the best mans speech equipped with slide show! lol
