Boho Loves: Annie Lovett Photography – Bold, Beautiful, Creative and Relaxed Wedding Photography

Today we are talking photography as I introduce you to one of my wonderful sponsors Annie Lovett Photography. Annie is based in Cambridge but is happy to cover weddings all over the UK and has a bucket list of weddings to tick off her ever-growing list; Beaches and piers. Woodlands and moorlands. Mountains and peaks. French, Italian, Spanish, Greek or Hindi. Carnival, village fete, or festival. Backyard or warehouse. Gig or beer festival. Mad Hatter’s tea party or garden party. Snow and northern lights. Her style is relaxed, creative with an edge of something different, so she is interested in hearing from couples who are looking to do their own thing, with an informal and relaxed vibe.

‘I’ve been shooting weddings professionally for five years, but have been an informal photographer for a lot longer. People, colours, emotion, characters and light all spark my interest. I’ve really found my stride in shooting weddings and bringing all of these elements together, and haven’t looked back! ‘

How long have you been taking photos for
I’ve dabbled in cameras and photography since my schooldays – I still have my Dad’s Olympus OM-10 35mm film camera and spent hours in the darkrooms at college. When I hit the age when everyone around me seemed to start getting married and having babies, I was asked to take portraits and informal wedding coverage or as gifts and it’s snowballed from there.
I’ve been shooting weddings professionally for five years, but have been an informal photographer for a lot longer. People, colours, emotion, characters and light all spark my interest. I’ve really found my stride in shooting weddings and bringing all of these elements together, and haven’t looked back!

Where are you based
I’m based in the pretty city of Cambridge, where I was born and grew up. If you haven’t visited, you should, it’s beautiful.

How far will you travel for a wedding
I’m based in Cambridgeshire but travel all over the UK; I’ve shot weddings in Yorkshire, Cambridge, London, and Kent to name a few.
However, with often itchy feet to explore new places, I am more than happy to go further for a special wedding day. So if you’re getting married in a rustic European village, on a tropical beach, or in a safari lodge, I’d love to hear from you!

How would you describe your style
My approach is creative, relaxed and as natural as possible. I like to see myself as a storyteller, not maker, mixing candid with fine art. I aim to blend in with the couple and their family and friends so that I can shoot the day as it happens, getting all the big and small – and sometimes unexpected – moments, and everything in between.
The combination of creative portraits, sneaky documentary shots, and dance floor action never fails to inspire me and make me smile from ear to ear. I know everyone says it but it’s true when I say this really doesn’t feel like work.

What do you enjoy most about your job
I love being right there, backstage and in the front row, for the whole day. I will well up during the vows. I will join the dad beaming with pride as he walks his daughter down the aisle. I will be belly laughing with everyone during the speeches. I will be in the thick of it on the dancefloor. All those moments are so special, and to get to be a part of it and record it is really privileged, enjoyable thing to do.
There’s also a load of excitement when I’ve sent a client’s final gallery off. Knowing that you’ve put together an amazing story, with loads of meaningful images that will be loved and enjoyed, that’s a pretty lucky thing to be able to do. And to do it as a job? Even more so. What’s not to love about that?!

Highlights so far
A career highlight so far has to be shooting a weekend-long wedding celebration at Das Eisenberg in southern Austria last summer. Everything – from the beautiful surroundings and the bride’s blush Catherine Deane dress, to the afternoon games and balloons, to the swimming pool and sweaty dance party (it was a mid-30s heatwave!) – came together so well and to be able to spend a whole weekend with everyone, getting to know people, hearing stories, made for a really special set of images.
A close second would be a London nautical wedding held at Orleans House Gallery in Twickenham and Hammersmith Riverside Events at Auriol Kensington Rowing Club. The minute we stepped on the boat and Stevie Wonder started blasting out, I knew it was going to be an amazing day, and I wasn’t wrong. I think my face hurt as much as my feet from all the smiling and laughing with an incredible crowd!
Oh, and an 85 year old grandad owning the dance floor, air-guitaring on his walking stick.

What sort of couple do you think you attract and what would be your ideal wedding to work on
My style is best suited to couples who are steering away from what weddings ‘should’ be, and are doing their own thing; the more informal, relaxed, and creative the better.
Loving a bit of exploration and imagination, I have a growing wish-list of weddings to shoot. Beaches and piers. Woodlands and moorlands. Mountains and peaks. French, Italian, Spanish, Greek or Hindi. Carnival, village fete, or festival. Backyard or warehouse. Gig or beer festival. Mad Hatter’s tea party or garden party. Snow and northern lights…I could go on!

What in your opinion makes the perfect photo and what is your favourite photo that you have taken
For me the ‘perfect’ shot isn’t something that’s pristine or straight off of a bridal magazine cover. In fact, it’s anything but that.
It’s about freezing a moment. A couple giggling through their vows. A hand on a shoulder as a sign of love and support. A kid jumping in a puddle. A grandad owning the dance floor. Something that’s filled with life and soul. Something that evokes emotion or a big belly laugh at a comedic moment. That, for me, is what makes a perfect photo.
This picture is one of my favourites from last year. I love the colours and location, as it’s not your typical wedding couple shot. I think it shows that you can be creative, bold and fun, and do something unique – anything to run away from cliched shots!
That said though, what I love most about this shot is that moment between the two of them. The massive beaming smile and throw-your-head-back laugh. The togetherness. It captures all the joy and smiles that were echoed throughout the day and I absolutely love that.

What advice would you give couples when choosing their wedding photographer
On the organising side of things, I’m currently planning my own wedding for later this year so I’m right there in the thick of it with Boho readers on planning and making decisions!
When choosing your wedding photographer, I’d say keep two things in mind: make sure their style appeals to you both and suits the day you’re planning, and make sure you get on! You’re inviting them into your closest circle of family and friends for one of the biggest days of your lives so it’s really important that you’re comfortable with them and have a friendly face around. If you’re relaxed and everyone’s enjoying themselves, the images make themselves.

Can you give me some information on your pricing structure
Keeping things simple, honest and straightforward, I offer one comprehensive package for wedding photography that gives my clients everything they need; a pre-wedding shoot, full day coverage from getting ready through till the party, and 400+ images to print and share as you wish.
Every couple is different though and I am happy to offer bespoke packages, such as adding a coffee table album and smaller books for parents.

What am I looking forward to in 2016
Of course one of the main things I’m looking forward to this year is photographing more brilliant couples around the UK, in new locations, with different creative ideas. My own wedding in Cambridge and honeymoon in New York and Barbados should probably also feature in the things I’m looking forward to!

If promoting a new product or range can you tell our readers about it and the inspiration behind this
Looking for a cleaner, simpler, more contemporary look that better reflects my work and let’s my images stand out on their own, I’ve just refreshed and rebranded my business.
To celebrate, I’m offering Boho readers an exclusive 20% off all weddings booked before the end of March 2016; just quote ‘Boho Blog Offer’ when enquiring.
