Diary of a Boho Bride – Faye and Jens, Entry 1: Planning a Wedding in the UK From Germany

diary of a boho bride

Today on Diary of a Boho Bride we hear from Faye and Jens for the first time since their introduction. In Their first diary entry they tell us all about how they are getting on planning a wedding in the UK while living in Germany. As you can imagine it isn’t easy!

I’ll pass the Blog over to Faye………..

As already written in our introduction post, Jens and I both live in Germany but are getting married in England. I am from England and I met Jens on a semester exchange 6 years ago when I was in his home town of Reutlingen in southern Germany. Our friends and family all think we are mad to stress ourselves out by planning our wedding ‘abroad’ but it has so far been a breeze!
We fly to the London every couple of months for long weekends so we normally do our wedding things during that time. The internet is also our saviour and we are able to look and do a lot of research before we buy, which is a good thing as I think I would max out our cards if I saw everything in the flesh!

Most people would also say that I could ask my bridesmaids to help me out, but while one is living in the UK the other is Canadian and is currently residing in Switzerland (with one of our ushers), and the bridesmaids only met each other in December  so it is back to all three of us researching on the internet and emailing each other.

The hardest things that we had to do was find our venue, we did a lot of research and booked a long weekend in London last Feb, we then crammed in as many appointments into two days as we could. We thankfully booked South Farm on the first day of our visit and fell in love with it, as I don’t think I could have gone through another weekend of flying around looking at places again (and discussing/arguing with my mum about why I will not book a venue based on seat covers!). We also found our photographer Jordanna over the internet and had our first consultation on the phone with her, we booked her in June and didn’t meet her till the October, but she made everything so easy for us that we didn’t worry at all.

There is of course slight cultural points that we have to take into consideration with the Germans too. The German family were quite shocked when we said where we were getting married in the UK and their first thought was ‘oh god, my English is terrible’. But we are going to have every invitation printed in both languages, we have a wedding blog page with accommodation information in German and English and we have asked both of our mums if they would do a reading, with my Mum obviously doing it in English and the mother in law doing hers in German so that both sides feel integrated.

We have of course had a few people say that they can’t come as it is too far, or too expensive which is a shame, but we are organising a ‘Polta Abend’ two weeks before our day. What is a Polta Abend I here you ask?!? Well it is a German tradition of having a party before your wedding, and your guests all turn up with old porcelain cups and plates to smash. The bride and groom then have to work together to clean all of the mess up, while the guests try to cause as much mess as possible. I have heard about people bringing bathroom suites to smash up, so I am hoping that our guests will be kind to us. We thought that we would have this party so that any friends, family and co-workers who can’t make the big day can come and feel involved (and we also like a party!).

The next things on our list to organise are the flowers and cake, so pinterest is my friend at the moment!

We just can’t wait to jump in our car with a couple of friends late July and make my road trip as a free woman to my little island!

Snap! Oh, Faye – it’s so lovely to read your post: we’re also both living in Germany, and organising our ‘destination wedding’ in the UK in late April (although, we’re both British, so not such a cultural cocktail among our congregation!). It’s proving brilliant and bewildering in equal measure. Wishing you and Jens lots of luck, not that you’ll need it – if your lovely photos are anything to go by, yours will be ein perfekter Tag!
