Hannah and Simon’s Hand Crafted Barn Wedding in Reading by Jodie Mitchell Photography

Hey you lovely people, I hope you are doing well. How on earth is it Thursday already? This week is flying by, it will be the weekend before you know it! Today I have the most delightful wedding to share with you and it’s super special as it happened straight after the last Corvid restrictions were lifted this summer. It’s so good to see weddings from this year without facemasks and hand sanitizer, with people living life and really enjoying themselves! Hannah and Simon held a gorgeous barn wedding with plenty of hand crafted details and decoration. They filled their day with love, smiles and joyfulness, just how a wedding should be. Big thanks to Jodie Mitchell Photography for the lovely photos.

The most amazingly perfect day we could have imagined and wished for. To have all our family and friends together after Covid, with no restrictions made us feel like the luckiest couple and made it extra special for everyone.

Hannah and Simon were married on 23rd July 2021 at Ufton Court in Reading. ‘We always wanted a beautiful barn surrounded by countryside to give us that laid back vibe we were after. We had 80 guests in the day and an extra 80 at night, it took a year and a half to plan.’

How they met
Together for 7 years. We met at my sisters wedding when I was bridesmaid and Simon was the best man!!

The proposal
Simon took me to Stanley Park (my maiden name) in Vancouver. We hired bikes and cycles the costal trail. He stopped at prospect point which is a beautiful viewpoint and asked me to marry him J

How did you allocate your budget?
Covid helped us save!! We did our research and worked out what was important to us both. We then allocated the budget and Simon is amazing on excel so we kept it in check

Where did you splurge and where did you save?
I didn’t go mad on my dress with the thought I would only wear it once but what I did was have a seamstress customise it for me so I still felt amazing but for a good price. We went all out for the lights, venue and food as the setting and food is so important to make a day super special.

How did you choose your photographer?
Our lovely caterers gave us her details as he had met Jodie before at a venue and spoke to highly of her. I looked at her Instagram and immediately I wanted her to be the one to shoot our wedding.

The suit and bridesmaids
Suit@ Dooley & Rostron Manchester. B’maids:ASOS

Theme or colour scheme
Blush pink and Ivory

Flowers
White roses, eucalyptus, gypsophila

Decoration
Table plan on a vintage ladder I made. Oakwood events lighting. Wooden boards with lanterns filled with ivy. Roses in glass jars. Eucalyptus table runner

Food
Fosters catering did the most amazing spread!! ‘The posh one’ bbq for the day and pizza over in the night

Wedding cake
The reading cake company, 3 tiered naked cake which was lemon and Victoria sponge

Entertainment
Sion Wiley playing his guitar and singing in the garden all day! Magic Alan the magician in the evening and our friends the Finny brothers put on a disco for us in the evening of our fave tunes of northern soul and motown!

Who supplied the stationery?
Vistaprints and Hobbycraft

Where are you going on your honeymoon?
We want to go to Costa Rica as soon as we can get there but we went to Jersey for the week and it was beautiful just not quite jungle trekking.

Personal touches
Most of the decorations I made – the centre pieces. Painted a old wooden retro ladder and wrapped flower garlands around it. This became the seating plan. Simon loves his garden so he grew a lot of the flowers that were displayed outside the barn. Home made favours of chocolates from my home in Devon made by a family friend who is the best chocolatier ever. Huge primark haul of flip flops for all the guests who’s feet where killing them and wanted to carry on the party!

Special moments
Just the sheer amount of love we felt in the room from everyone. We felt like we couldn’t be luckier.

Advice for other couples
Plan your wedding exactly how you want it and don’t worry what you think other people would expect or want!! You want to end your special day not wanting to Make any changes.

Biggest surprise
That the Covid restrictions lifted for weddings on the Monday and we got married on the Friday (4 days later). We just felt like this was the best surprise ever as we thought in our heads this would never have been a possibility!! After the last 18 months working on the frontline in the NHS we really needed this wedding as something to look forward too! All those amazing health care workers that came and let there hair down was such a lovely sight to see and massively deserved.

I love creative, alternative weddings. Throw your traditions out of the window like confetti and hit me with your weird and wonderful ideas. No dated, traditional poses and absolutely no vignettes or sepia. My favourite kinds of weddings are the ones that go with their own flow and don’t listen to the unsolicited advice – just a couple that are in love and showing it in their own way. I’m a Berkshire and London wedding photographer, but I’ve also got four wheels and a passport, so I’m always ready for an adventure and happy to travel throughout the UK and internationally.
