Advice From the Married Side – Real Brides Advice From Their Wedding Day

This afternoon we are back with another healthy dose of wedding planning advice in our monthly ‘Advice from the Married Side’ feature. I have so many amazing real weddings on the blog and with each wedding I ask the couple to share with us some of their wedding planning knowledge. Every month I collect all their advice together and put together this post. Lots of wonderful words of wedding wisdom for you to take on board and put into your own wedding planning journey. I hope there will be something amongst these experiences that help you……….Happy Planning!

Planning

  • It gets really frustrating to see that some things don’t go according to plan, believe me, guests don’t even notice if something goes slightly wrong.
  • If I had to give any tips for planning your big day I would say ideally work with a venue that already exists and where maybe the food and furniture more etc are all part of the package.
  • Enjoy every second of the wedding planning experience. It will be over in a flash. It is a once in a lifetime experience as a couple so make the most of it together.
  • The amount of planning and detail is important but don’t stress over it too much as on the day you’ll be so wrapped up in the magic, you won’t notice if the labels aren’t at 90 degrees.
  • Start planning early and not to overthink everything.
  • Not plan too far in advance. I changed my mind of the small decorative bits a few times so was glad I didn’t start ordering/booking stuff too much in advance.
  • Remember that it’s not just about the actual day, it’s about the build up to it as well. So make sure the planning of it all is exciting and doesn’t become stressful or a chore.
  • We started preparations for the wedding early, and tried to get as many of the DIY things done along the way. No point waiting until nearer the time as there are so many little things to be done around then
  • Always keep your guests at the back of your mind, the worst thing you’d want is for your guests to be hungry/bored/sober.

Making the day personal to you

  • Forget about what you think is expected of you and stay true to the wedding you want, but don’t sweat the small stuff!
  • Have fun and enjoy it all, look into various ideas and make sure it is all about what you both want from that day!
  • Make it personal to you as a couple and include things unique to you both.Think about what matters most to you with regards to the day and make that the priority.
  • Do whatever feels right for you both, it doesn’t need to follow the standard traditional wedding prototype if you don’t want it to! Just do whatever’s going to make you both really happy and give you the best day of your lives and you can’t go wrong.

On The Day

  • On the wedding day don’t try to change what’s going on around you, just enjoy your day
  • Try and enjoy every moment as it goes by so quickly. It is amazing how many things you miss because you simply can’t be everywhere at once. This is why your photographer is so important as they capture the memories you weren’t there to see.
  • As for the big day remember that at the end of the day it is you marrying your best friend and thats the most important thing. Its great that your family and best friends from all over the world are there to be with you too but remember to take time for you and your husband and have your special moments too.
  • The day will go quicker than you think. Try and soak up every second and breathe it all in.
  • Not to stress if something little goes wrong or not to plan you will be the only one to know.
Leave enough time in the day for people to relax together without being ushered to dinner, photos or speeches! It’s a great chance for people to enjoy themselves and for you to catch up with each other and your guests.
  • Most of all on the day don’t stress just enjoy every second.
  • So much preparation, time and thought goes into your wedding day, so make sure on the day you try and take everything in as it goes so quickly!

Getting Organised

  • For brides, take time choosing the dress – I went through 3 choices before settling on the right one.
  • Keep it simple where you can. Spend your money where it matters and don’t be afraid to ask your friends and family for help.
  • Just listen to each other and compromise on your decisions. The bride will want to hear what the grooms thoughts and views are so make sure he’s included! You’re best friends and going through it together!
  • We made a really in depth time table of the day so that we knew there were no boring gaps.
  • We didn’t realise how little we would be able to do ourselves on the actual day. If you are organising lots of the details yourselves we would recommend involving friends as early as possible in the planning so that they can execute all your ideas on the day.

General Advice

  • Even if you are the ultimate Bridezilla, there will be moments that stress you out, times that you have to compromise and others that you question decisions you make… but as soon as you make it to the end of the aisle everything else melts away and nothing else matters!
  • It’s all about sharing the day with your friends and family. The enjoyment of seeing people enjoying themselves at your wedding, which you have taken time to plan, is what made the day for us. Don’t stress about the little details.
  • Trust your suppliers. If you don’t then they are not right for you. In most situations it pays to pay a little bit more to ensure you get the level of service, professionalism and results you want to achieve.
  • Invest in capturing the day by choosing excellent photographers and hiring a videographer. Even if you can’t afford one – the video captures the memories in such a different way to the pictures and is well worth it.
  • Get everyone involved – the whole two-day wedding felt like a collaboration between all of our friends and family.
Get some Go Pros – you will get some priceless footage!
  • When decorating a large space, decide which areas are going to form backdrops for the day and focus on making those a feature rather than spreading decorations out too much.
