I have a stunning wedding for you today, courtesy of Photos By Zoe and second shooter Babb Photos. It’s a back to nature wedding full of ornithology references as the couple Sarah and Martin are big bird lovers. With a stunning barn venue the couple’s aim was to bring the outside in for their wedding and that they certainly did. With handmade decorations, twigs, paper bunting, handmade accessories and nature based temporary tattoos, this wedding is just so pretty and natural. They also managed to keep everything to a budget by doing a lot of it themselves and by asking guest to bring a dish to the wedding instead of a gift. A beautiful, laid back wedding indeed!
Sarah and Martin tied the knot in front of 140 guests on 8th March at Gilbert White’s Field Study Centre. “We both come from a quite a strong bird loving family , and my (Sarah’s) textile art work revolves mainly around birds. So it seemed only natural to get married in a place that was home to Gilbert White (a pioneering English naturalist and ornithologist)”
How they met
We met on the 8th March 2008 to the day, so perfect timing to have a wedding! So we had been together exactly 6 years on our wedding day. Brought together by two of our friends dating, my friends and his friends both joining up for a pub night out.
The proposal
As we met in Winchester, it only seemed right to take things back to our roots, which led to Martin proposing to me on the top of St Gile’s Hill (Winchester) at the view point. It was a wet & windy day (I was quite reluctant to go for a walk – but I’m glad I did) and so Martin had brought a Sainsbury’s carrier bag to kneel down on!
How did you allocate the budget?
We have also been quite frugal with money, so we did a lot of the day ourselves. I made decorations, we asked each guest to bring a dish of vegetarian food instead of a gift, and only really spent out on hiring the venue.
Why did you choose your photographer?
We (I!) choose Zoe to be our wedding photographer from being a big Facebook fan of her work! Having followed her work for a couple of years I knew her style and artistic creative flair was just what I wanted to capture our day. It was a long shot to ask her to travel so far, but so so grateful she said yes!!
The dress and accessories
– My dress was from a maker on Etsy AtelierDeCoutureJK
– I wore a handmade felted collar by Lou Tonkin.
– Temp tatoo’s by The Aviary
– I made the headdress myself.
The suit and bridesmaids
Martin’s suit was from River Island. The bridesmaids dress’ were from Matthew Williamson, and I made their accessories.
The theme
The theme was in general nature, including dried seed heads, feathers and birds, oh and twigs :).
The food and wedding cake
Our food was provided by our guests, a beautiful range of homemade vegetarian dishes. Our vegan wedding cake was made by Sublime Cakes.
