Photography Show and Tell: Lukas P. Schmidt Photography - Authentic and Moving Wedding Photos in Mallorca

My favourite part of any wedding is the wedding photography. In my humble opinion and having learnt from experience, if you want to spend your wedding budget anywhere make sure you don’t scrimp on the wedding photography! Choosing the right photographer for you is so important! There are many things to take in consideration, but really you need to be looking at their style of photography and also them as people! Today I have invited Lukas P. Schmidt to the blog to talk us through his work, share with us some of his favourite shots and to get to know him better. Lukas’s work is absolutely beautiful. His style is creative but timeless, capturing the raw emotions of the day in a natural and artistic manner. Focusing on his storytelling, his pictures really capture the essence of the day, taking you back to those special moments that only great photography can. How would you describe your style?
Creative but timeless. It is particularly important to me to create wedding photos that become genuine family heirlooms. To do this, they must be able to withstand social media trends and be truly authentic. Like no other medium, photos can capture fractions of a second, tiny, quiet moments and give them eternal significance. But only if you understand and take “timeless” seriously. Not as a cliché, but as a mission.

What is your favourite bit of technical kit?
There isn’t just one. It depends on what I want to document. But it’s always lenses, not cameras. Fast lenses, preferably with a slightly longer focal length. Basically, though, I’m convinced that technical equipment only accounts for a small fraction of the quality of my work. Mastering the equipment and craft of photography blindly is, at most, the basics of wedding photography and a mandatory prerequisite. Things like anticipation, empathy, stress resistance, humor, and the ability to quickly build human connections (and want to) contribute much more. They are necessary to integrate into existing groups and feel what is happening around you.

What makes you different to your competitors?
There are many excellent photographers, including in Mallorca. It is difficult to make a direct comparison between our work; there is no such thing as the best photographer, only the one who is best suited to the respective client. My approach differs from that of many others in that I focus uncompromisingly on the experience of my clients. I want to be an asset, as uncomplicated as possible and as helpful as possible in all matters. This also includes responsiveness and fast delivery (for example, I plan my calendar so that no couple has to wait longer than 14 days for their photos, even if this means I can take on fewer assignments). I never see myself as an artist in relation to my clients, but rather as a service provider, and I love to bring joy.

What do you enjoy most about your job?
Being able to work creatively and thereby give other people things that have real meaning.

What is your biggest achievement so far?
For me, every wedding was an achievement, as corny as that sounds. When my photos move people to tears or make them cry with laughter, that means everything to me.

What sort of couple do you think you attract?
Those who want genuine memories and are willing to have genuine feelings. Those who are less concerned about how something might look later than how it can be experienced and enjoyed right now. This is something I can create during a couple’s photo shoot, for example, but it should be a given and desired on the wedding day. So couples who want to get married and be photographed doing so, rather than those who get married to be photographed for their public image.

What would be your ideal wedding to work on?
I’ve had so many of them—and they’ve all been too different to come up with a definition. Whether intimate weddings for just the couple or large weddings with more than 200 guests and a gala atmosphere.

Which celeb would you like to photograph?
I have photographed quite a few, from professional soccer players to the most famous show hosts on German television. But on site, in my interactions with them and in my work, it makes no difference to any other wedding. The external perception is different, but if I were to bring that into the wedding, it would influence my work—and that’s not what I’m hired f

Who is your favourite photographer and why?
That’s a very difficult question. At the moment, I would say Fer Juaristi—I love his visual style, his colours, and his creative yet playful way of documenting things.

What in your opinion makes the perfect photo?
In terms of craftsmanship, especially composition and the use of natural light. When it comes to wedding photos, however, there are certainly a few other things to consider in terms of content.

What advice would you give couples when choosing their wedding photographer?
Take a look at complete galleries and then find out who can deliver exactly what you want later on. And believe me: the likelihood is extremely high that you have no idea what that is yet. Even if you’ve already seen thousands of wedding photos on Instagram or Pinterest and have already ordered those sunglasses from Temu or are looking for someone who also takes those blurry pictures. Entire galleries show you what you can expect in terms of quality and quantity and what can be documented that you yourself don’t even notice. On the other hand, only book service providers who don’t get on your nerves, but are cool. They’ll be hanging around you all day, so you should find them at least a little likable.

Can you give me some information on your pricing structure?
For weekends I´m starting with 5 hours Minium at 2000€

What is your ideal way to spend a day off?
Walking with my dogs (in the mountains probably, followed by a barbecue with my wife, good wine and friends.

What can you never leave the house without?
Sunglasses (living in Mallorca)

Who would be your 5 dream dinner guests dead or alive?
Those who join us for dinner quite often in reality

What would you do if you won the lottery?
Work a little less. One or two days off would be nice for my social life in the summer.

If you weren’t running your business, what would you be doing?
I have always made my life decisions more or less spontaneously. I have never been without a job since I was 13, but I have also never applied for one anywhere. Perhaps I would still be in my previous job as a press officer for a soccer club.
