Photography Show and Tell: Barnaby Aldrick Photography – Timeless Moments You’ll Treasure Forever.

It’s been a while since I had a show and tell feature on the blog, so today I am delighted to introduce you to Barnaby Aldrick Photography. Barnaby is from Yorkshire and loves nothing more than his job as a wedding photographer (mixed in with a bit of travel photography when the opportunity arises.) He has a natural style that he has fine tuned over the years, leaving you with lasting timeless memories, mixed with a sense of humour and emotion. His photography is crisp, modern and full of sentiment. So if you are currently looking for a wedding photographer then look no further!

My fun, relaxed photography champions the joy and love flowing through your big day, leaving you with laid-back portraits, stunning details and timeless moments that you’ll treasure forever.

How long have you been taking photos for?
Nearly 18 years!

When did you start your photography business and what made you start:
After studying Psychology at Nottingham Uni I rekindled my love for adventure and took a year out to explore the globe with my camera. On my return, I started selling travel prints at The Corn Exchange in Leeds but was soon asked by The Leeds Guide Magazine to shoot their varied editorial briefs. Meanwhile, friends asked if I would capture their weddings. Within a few years, I was photographing 30+ weddings per year – and loving it! Over 300 weddings later, I still relish the challenge of weaving a story out of a couple’s special day. I was always looking for a career that was outside the norm with a great work/life balance and wedding photography has enabled me to live a creative life!

Where are you based?
Leeds, in God’s Own County of Yorkshire!

How far will you travel for a wedding?
I’ve done destination weddings as far away as India, Thailand, Malta, Ibiza and France, but the bulk of my work is in the UK, around Yorkshire.

How would you describe your style?
Relaxed, fun, timeless story-telling. I don’t generally to pigeon-hole my style into documentary/reportage/fine art/fashion etc, as a telling a story requires many styles.

What is your favourite bit of technical kit?
Weirdly it’s a little clamp that I can click my flash to and clamp onto light fittings/curtains/doors/picture frames – and allows me creatively add a lick of light to an otherwise flat scene! Adding light, without it looking added, is a dark art!

What makes you different to your competitors?
My years of experience shooting every shape and style of wedding help me read the needs of a wedding, like a secret member of the wedding party. Behind the scenes I’m also a big believer in great communication and efficient workflow, for a lightning fast delivery of images. Many elements of what make my service unique, from my personality to my ‘wedmin’, are hard to appreciate when comparing photographers by their insta feeds, and it’s only after the wedding do couples truly see how much I brought to the table.

What do you enjoy most about your job?
As a natural starter-finisher, I love the creativity involved in capturing, weaving and delivering a rich story of images, that will be used to bring back magical memories for years to come. It’s wonderful to hear from couples on their anniversaries saying my images brought it all flooding back!

What is your biggest achievement so far?
While some of the destination weddings I’ve shot have felt impossibly exotic, the fact that I’ve genuinely never left a couple waiting longer than a month for their finished set of images is probably my biggest achievement! This may not sound like much, but it’s heralded me the title ‘Captain Consistency’ amongst my photo peers!

What sort of couple do you think you attract?
These days, I’d say I probably attract relaxed couples, late 20s > mid 50s – who probably share an appreciation life’s pleasures; good food, great pubs, the outdoors and probably dogs! A pair looking for an unobtrusive but assertive shooter, who can bring fun and efficiency to their wedding photography – without detracting from them being in the moment with their guests, having the time of their lives!

What would be your ideal wedding to work on?
As much as I love shooting at country houses and fancy hotels, I dig down-to-earth marquee weddings on a family farm surrounded by dogs and Landrovers. Throw in an eccentric celebrant, great grub and a silly activity like a flat-cap throwing competition and we’re laughing!

Which celeb would you like to photograph?
Bono! While he’s got haters, as the front man of a band that has stood the test of time, with amazing content in their wake and still creating today, I suspect we’d have a lot to chat about…

Who is your favourite photographer and why?
I love the travel photography of Steve McCurry – the Magnum / National Geographic shooter who captured that haunting portrait of the green-eyed Afgan Girl. He’s just a master with light, and his cityscapes, portraits and landscapes are so clean, evocative and exotic. His ‘South SoutEast’ book is one of my all time faves!

Who took the pictures at your wedding?
My wife and I had a Narnia themed wedding at LeftBank in Leeds back in December 2018 and we booked Aga Tomaszek to shoot it, because she has the perfect blend of charisma, fun and skill.

What in your opinion makes the perfect photo?
Capturing that ‘decisive moment’ – where a split-second frame, shows a whole universe of personality, joy and love – which can forever take you back to that moment of happiness.

What is your favourite photo that you have taken?
Ooooh – tough one! I have a lot of love for a photo I took at a close pal’s wedding back in 2016, hugging his new wife in the rain with a back flash lighting up a thousand individual rain drops. It speaks to me of their fun spirit as a pair, being up for making the most out of an unpredictable turn in the weather! A metaphor that has served them well in marriage, I’m sure.

What advice would you give couples when choosing their wedding photographer?
When shortlisting wedding photographers, check reviews from their couples (eg on Google and Facebook), ask them to show you some full weddings (as any ol’snapper can Instagram 10 pretty pics and not have the skills to document a full day, whatever the season) then meet them on Zoom / in person to check they’re a personality you’d like around you all day!

Can you give me some information on your pricing structure?
I’ve always offered competitive packages, starting with my £1500 ‘Digital Collection’ that includes most of the day coverage, a pre-wedding practice shoot, an optional public blog/private client gallery and 50 thank you cards. There are various other options, to add in a second photographer, extended evening coverage (with a £2000 ‘All Day 2 Shooters Collection’) as well options to design and print the wedding story in a range of stunning wedding albums.

What is your ideal way to spend a day off?
A lazy sunny afternoon in my hammock – under the shade of our apple tree, music on and a shoulder of pork low’n’slow sizzling on the BBQ – and friends joining us under the deck festoons for beers and giggles, firing up the firepit as the evening settles in!

What can you never leave the house without?
A flask of hot caffeine! I’m in a perpetual rotation of Yorkshire Tea, excellent coffee and chai.

Who would be your 5 dream dinner guests dead or alive?
It’d be rude not to invite Steve McCurry & Bono, but I’d also extend invites to Dave Grohl, Tina Fay & Arnold Schwarzenegger. I’m sure there’d be no shortage of tales and laughter round that table!

What would you do if you won the lottery?
I would become a full time travel photographer!

If you weren’t running your business, what would you be doing?
If it weren’t working for the Lonely Planet or National Geographic, I’d probably have followed my journey from Psychology toward human/computer interaction and my inner nerd and love for beautiful efficiency might have led to a company like Apple, dreaming up and designing funky tech!
