Erin and Ben’s Earth Toned ‘Retro Boho’ Oregon Wedding by Emett Joseph Photography

Erin and Ben both live in Oregon, so it made sense for them to hold their wedding there. They invited 220 guests and threw one heck of a party! I just love the colour scheme to this wedding. A mixture of deep reds, burnt oranges and sunshine yellow, which really goes well with the orchard backdrop. The day has a retro theme running through it, perfectly placed on the signage and stationery. Such a gorgeous wedding, with so many smiles and so much love, all captured perfectly by Emett Joseph Photography .

The most memorable party, with the most epic dance floor, filled with all of the important people in our lives.

Erin and Ben were married on 1st July 2023 at The Farm & Orchard, Corvallis, Oregon. ‘The venue is gorgeous and close to where we live. Oregon, our home for the last 8 years, is such a special place to us. We wanted to celebrate somewhere that was important to both of us. Plus, planning a wedding out of town sounded like a challenge we did not want to take on. We were really grateful so many people travelled to Oregon to celebrate with us. For many guests, this was their first time in Oregon, including a few family members who came all the way from the UK! We had 220 guests and it took a year and a half to plan.’

How they met
We met at a summer research program as undergrads in 2015 and have been together since.

The proposal
We got engaged in the summer of 2021 at the same location we met doing research six years earlier! It was a very easy “yes” for Erin.

How did you allocate your budget?
We prioritized spending on the photographer, entertainment, wedding dress, and alcohol (we wanted this to be an unforgettable party). Rentals (tables, chairs, table settings, etc) were a big cost too for the guest count we had. The bride and groom, with the help of family and friends, did a lot of DIY projects which cut costs on other things.

How did you choose your photographer?
We found Emett on Instagram. His playful yet moody style is exactly what we were looking for. Other than finding a venue and locking in a date, choosing Emett was one of the the first (and one of the best) decisions we made. Hiring Emett helped cement the whole vibe of our wedding. We did engagement photos with him on the Oregon coast in 2022, which was so fun. It helped us get to know him and allowed us to get a little more comfortable behind the camera before the actual wedding. The extensive searching of PNW wedding photographers on Instagram was well worth it, we might not have found Emett otherwise. Emett was an incredible hype man throughout the whole process and final photos he delivered are better than we could have ever imagined.

The dress
The dress is by Made With Love, found at The Bespoke Bride in Bend, OR. For jewelry I wore pearls passed down by my mother-in-law and earnings found on Etsy.

The suit and bridesmaids
The groom and groomsmen’s suits were rented from stitch & tie. The bridesmaids were given a colour palette asked to wear something in the colour palette that they liked and would wear again.

Theme or colour scheme
The vibes we were going for were retro, boho, playful, and colourful, all with the Willamette Valley as a gorgeous backdrop. The colour scheme was orangey-red earth tones and dark green.

The mother of the groom did all of the flower purchasing and arranging. The bride gave her a colour scheme and she did the rest of the work. The day before the wedding, she rounded up about 20 of her friends, family, and some of the bridesmaids to work on the “flower squad” to put together all of the arrangements. It was a lot more work than hiring a florist but it made the day that much more special (note, this option does require that someone, in this case the mother of the groom, has an extensive knowledge of flower arranging).

The venue itself was gorgeous and didn’t require a lot of decoration. For the decorations we did provide, we had flowers, hand dyed table runners painted vases made my the bride and some of her bridesmaids. We rented some furniture (couch, chairs, rugs) from For the Love of Pete in Salem, OR.

Hawaiian food from Noho’s Hawaiian Cafe in Portland. It was incredible, people are still telling us about how good the food was.

Wedding cake
For dessert, we had cupcakes made by Country Cake Shop in Salem, OR and mini cookies from Crumbl. We had a very small cake, also from Country Cake Shop, but we forgot to put it out  so we ate it the next night with friends and family still in town.

DJ from Noteworthy DJs in Portland. We wanted an epic dance party, so a DJ was a must over a band.

Who supplied the stationery?
Bride made all of the stationary in Canva.

Where did you go on your honeymoon?
We went to New Zealand over Christmas for our honeymoon.

Personal touches
Most of the things we did ourselves! The table runners, vases, stationary, and flower arrangements were all made by us and our friends and family.

Special moments
Some really special moments: We did our first look photos at a gorgeous spot near our house where we walk our dog. We wrote our own vows which added a really personal touch. Our ceremony was officiated by our best friend. The speeches made by the FOB, MOH, and best man were hilarious and heart warming. The dance floor was the best I’ve ever seen. After our first dance, the DJ played Man! I Feel Like a Woman, people flooded the dance floor and it remained full until the reception was over.

Advice for other couples
Make sure you have a day of coordinator! Two of our close friends who run their own race event business coordinated for us and it made the whole day go so smoothly. Also, you don’t have to follow all of the wedding traditions. Do whatever speaks to you, and don’t do any of the traditions you don’t absolutely love.

Biggest surprise
The bride had a hand in planning almost everything, so there weren’t too many big surprises. The bartender we hired, shoutout Potions in Motion (Corvallis, OR), took the decorating of her bar very seriously. I told her the vibe and colour scheme we were going for and she delivered.
