Anna and Richie’s Flower Filled Spring Barn Wedding in Cumbria by Peter Hugo Photography

Happy Friday everyone, how are you all? I hope you have had a good week so far? I am very happy it’s the weekend. I finish work at lunch time today and then I am going to get my make up done as I am going out this evening. We are going to see Rhod Gilbert with some friends, I have a new outfit, new make up (by the time she has finished with me) Dexter is at his Nanna’s house, so we are ready to hit the town. Saturday is a chilled one and then Sunday we are taking Dexter to see Marvel Universe, I’m not sure who is more excited, him, me or Nik! We are finishing off the week with this lovely wedding from Peter Hugo Photography. Anna and Richie got married in Cumbria this spring in a beautiful ceremony held at Eden Wedding Barn. They filled the ceremony and reception area with lots of gorgeous flowers, fairy lights and pretty rustic touches. Such a lovely day.

For a couple who have many adventures together… this was our best. A day full of love, family and hilarious dance moves.

Anna and Richie were married on13th April 2019 at Eden Wedding Barn, Kirby Stephen in Cumbria. ‘The second we got to Eden Barn we knew it was something special. It’s really tucked away and felt very private, at the end of a little country lane past farms and farmyard machinery! You would never know it was there which felt really private. We had 80 guests then 110 on the evening. It only took one year to plan. I bought my dress one year to the day before the wedding.’

How they met
We met in 2009 when I was in my third year at Newcastle University and I lived with Richie’s best friend, Becka. He came to visit her and we went to the pub… that was it. We have been together ten years this year.

The proposal
We went skiing to Tignes at New Year. I was past hoping Richie would ever propose (as we have been together for so long) so I totally was not expecting it. It was New Year’s Eve and we had an amazing day of skiing: blue skies and perfect conditions. On the evening, Richie insisted we sit out on our balcony to watch the fireworks (even though it was minus 8) and drink some champagne. Then he produced a ring from the pocket of his ski jacket and asked me to marry him.

How did you allocate your budget?
We knew we wanted to spend the majority of the money on: venue, food and entertainment! We just wanted our family to have an amazing day and spoil them. My nana really wanted to buy my dress, which was a lovely gesture as she bought my sister’s wedding dress too.

Where did you splurge and where did you save?
We splurged on the entertainment by having a sax duo, Somethin’ Blue, for the reception and then Steven Heath for the evening, along with a DJ he recommended Pat Mulligan. We know many singers offer services in the reception too but we really wanted some musical variety that all the guests could enjoy- so the sax went down very well. We also went for the best caterer we could find in the area, who had an amazing reputation. Some of our guests said it was the best wedding food they had ever had, which was nice to hear.  We also splurged on a cream and green vintage bus for our guests to be taken to the barn in.

How did you choose your photographer?
Peter Hugo seemed like the right choice from the start. We saw a post of his online and loved his style from the beginning. We both met him independently (due to work commitments) and both warmed to him instantly. On the day he absolutely made the wedding what it was, he was so personable and we got on so well that my guests actually presumed we knew him personally! He was incredible and the photos are perfect. He set everyone at ease with having their picture taken, from my 3 year old nephew to my 86 year old nana!

The dress
Dress by Catherine Deane from Marimme Bridal in Jesmond which I would absolutely recommend. They were fantastic with me and really made me feel at ease in the whole process. Accessories: borrowed gold and diamond bracelet from my mum, Anthropologie climber earrings and a hair vine from Alan Hannah. Shoes Kurt Geiger.

The suit and bridesmaids
Suit from Psyche in Middlesbrough and bridesmaids were Dessy from Elizabeth George in Middlesbrough.

Theme or colour scheme
Colour scheme was natural spring white and sage green.

Flowers
Spring flowers white and green boho: paper whites, hydrangea, ranunculus, eucalyptus and trailing amanthus. My flower girl had a beautiful flower crown and bridesmaids wore flowers in their hair.

Decoration
Flowers, flowers and more flowers. We really splurged on the flowers and kept other decorations to a minimum, all we really had was some personalised bunting, old photos on a pallet and two big balloons.

Food
Lots of canapes, BBQ (even though it was April) and sticky toffee pudding. The evening was a pizza van, which was incredible.

Wedding cake
The wedding cake was one of my favourite parts of the day. I have known Annabel since primary school and her business, Florence Bakery, started up a few years ago and has gone from strength to strength. She made us the most beautiful wedding cake, which tasted as good as it looked. She is getting very popular and has a big social media presence; she has even signed a few non-disclosure agreements for celebrity cakes. If I were to really really promote any of my wedding suppliers it would absolutely be Florence Bakery (and also Peter Hugo.) She is a single mum, with her daughter Evelyn and works extremely hard to be a full time mum and simultaneously running the most amazing company- I have no idea how she does it! Please check her out on Instagram @florencethebaker.

Entertainment
We splurged on the entertainment by having a sax duo, Somethin’ Blue, for the reception and then Steven Heath for the evening, along with a DJ he recommended Pat Mulligan.

Who supplied the stationery?
Ruby Shoes

Personal touches
We named our tables after places that are special to us and also make gin- so we put the flowers in the corresponding gin bottle. E.g. London Gin, Leeds Gin etc. We hung up photos of us throughout the ten years we have been together.

Special moments
A really special moment was just after the ceremony and confetti; we went off with Peter Hugo for photographs and he sat us on the back seat of the bus for a photograph. At that point it really hit us that we were married and we had a cheeky kiss on the back seat- it was like being back at school!

Advice for other couples
Stay with your bride or groom as much as you can. Lots of couples say they barely saw their partner on their wedding day, so we stuck together like glue! This meant I got to see lots of my lovely new husband all day and I would really recommend trying to do this.

Biggest surprise
The biggest surprise was the day after when we went to the venue to take down all the decorations and flowers and I cried… literally all day! I think I was so sad it was over! So be prepared to be emotional.
