Ben Rogers from EarCandy tells us more about his amazing business.

What made you start your business?
I was working in the commercial industry, prior to starting Earcandy. I saw a distinct difference between the quality of the performers that I was lucky enough to work with. Live music, when done right, brings people together, and when it’s good, is an almost transcendent experience.

For most of my friend’s weddings the entertainment was sub-par, and left guests feeling deflated after the wedding – it was very amateur and ‘pub band’. I thought that with the people I was working with could do a lot better, so we decided to create our first band, Motown Gold.

Since then, we’ve built the business and now serve clients all over the world, from the most intimate weddings to celebrity parties, big corporate events and everything in between. Earcandy is recommended by some of the most exclusive wedding venues and is now the go-to choice for some of the biggest wedding planners in the world.

When did you start and where are you based. 
Back in February 2010. Our offices are based in Wimbledon, but we work across the UK and abroad. 

What were you doing before?
I was working in the commercial music industry as a songwriter / artist manager.

How would you describe your style?
We have all different styles of entertainment available – we’re the choice for brides and grooms that love live music, and understand the value that an exceptional live performance has for their wedding.

Our first act was Motown, but we’ve since added a range of outstanding artists and acts, covering most genres: classical; indie; swing jazz; rock; new soul; R ‘n’ B; funk; and pop. We have a phenomenal DJ and sax combo working with us, and an extraordinarily talented harpist. And the Earcandy Christmas band is as festive as they come.

We work with a small number of highly professional musicians and performers to cater to as wide a range of musical tastes as possible.

What makes you different to your competitors?
Earcandy is not a typical ‘middleman’ agency with thousands of acts on our books – Earcandy is more like a boutique production company. We believe in focusing on quality over quantity, and our team is truly passionate about creating experiences that our customers and their guests never forget.

That includes the obvious things; better handpicked performers, suitable sound equipment. But also the small details, like providing our singers with wireless microphones, so they can come to the audience and get everyone involved. It’s small things like that that creates incredible ‘hands in the air’, ‘singing in unison’ moments that you can’t find anywhere else.

What do you enjoy most about your job?
I love receiving feedback from our customers about how the entertainment elevated the end to their wedding day – to know that we’ve made a difference to one of the most memorable moments of their lives reminds me how lucky I am to be working in this wonderful industry.

What sort of couple do you think you attract?
We attract sophisticated couples who already understand what live music adds to events. We’re probably not right for customers who think of the music as just an ‘addon’ to their wedding. We’re for couples that want the entertainment to be standout and a real feature of their wedding.

What would be your ideal wedding to work on? 
The great thing about working in this industry is that every wedding is a little bit (and sometimes very) different. So, I don’t really have a favourite scenario or customer type. I just really enjoy working with couples to help them design a musical plan that will make their wedding unique, and the entertainment be a real highlight of their wedding. 

Can you give me some information on your pricing structure?
It very much depends on your venue, location of the wedding, number of guests etc.. If you contact our team, we will give you a complimentary consultation and provide you with a tailored quotation.

What is your ideal way to spend a day off?
Spending quality time with my wonderful fiancé, and my family – that’s what I enjoy the most.

Who would be your 5 dream dinner guests dead or alive?
I’d have to go musical; Aretha Franklin, Bruno Mars, Freddie Mercury, Stevie Wonder, Beyonce. I think we could get a pretty amazing ‘Jam’ going with them.
