Thomas and Lisa’s Fun Filled Rustic Barn Wedding With a Petting Zoo by This and That Photography

Happy Monday everyone and how are you all this lovely Monday morning? Did you have a good weekend? Was there much wedding planning going on? Mine was fabulous. I went to watch Peter Rabbit on Friday which I can highly recommend. Saturday was spent at Cannon Hall Farm with friends and Sunday was spent doing a spot of modeling for Jess Petries family photography workshop.
I have some exciting news. I have started a Boho Brides and Grooms Facebook Group, if you are interested in joining you can find us HERE. I’m hoping it will become a lovely community of like-minded Boho brides, grooms, bridesmaids, mother of the brides all looking for support, friendship, advice and a bit of fun during their wedding planning, so pop on by and join us.
On with today’s wedding and we have the lovely This and That Photography back on the blog with the gorgeous wedding of Tom and Lisa. The wedding is super cute, filled with rustic detailing and the most gorgeous barn venue. However, the best bit has to be the petting zoo that they hired in for part of their wedding entertainment! What a cool idea! I LOVE it!

Very us! With goats, good food and a relaxed, yet beautiful venue it couldn’t have been more Tom & Lisa.

Lisa and Thomas were married on 9th October 2017 at the The Clock Barn, Whitchurch, Hampshire. ‘The venue has a natural beauty and we wanted a converted barn that wasn’t too “farm-like” and wasn’t too contemporary. The Stable Room reminded us of a Swiss Chalet. As you’ll see below we got engaged in Switzerland and it was the inspiration for our wedding. We has 65 guests for the day and a  total of 85 for the evening, it took one year and ten months to plan.

How they met
We met at work and this December we’ll have been together 9 years.

The proposal
I never wanted a “public” proposal, so he knew a restaurant or the like was not for me. We were on our summer holiday in Switzerland and walking, on a very sunny day, by the side of beautiful, bright blue, clear lake in Brienz. Tom stopped and said it’d be a good place to take a photo and asked me to sit on some steps leading down to the water. He told me to wait there whilst he got something from his bag. I thought he was reaching for my 30-year-old teddy bear that he likes to take places to make me cross! But it wasn’t, it was a beautiful, hand-carved, wooden ring box. He got down on one knee and there was no-one else around. The rest as they say, is history!!

How did you allocate your budget?
We’ve always been quality over quantity type of people and we wanted to ensure that for the important things we got the best we could afford. We weren’t actually too strict with a budget as we paid and saved as we went along but we knew we’d end up spending around £20-25K. I did a fair amount of research so I knew what a “sensible” price for most things was. We wanted quality food, photography & band.

Where did you splurge and where did you save?
Saving: We didn’t have wedding cars as the journeys were so close to home. A family member ended up asking a family friend to use their car as the bridal car but the Best Man drove the Groom. I asked for gift vouchers for birthdays & Christmases for Etsy and department stores to help with the cost. A family friend made the cake and ended up giving it to us as a gift and my cousin (also Maid of Honour) did our flowers at cost (we did give her vouchers as a thank you gift). My dad made the table name signs out of recycled wood and we made a lot of decorations ourselves.

How did you choose your photographer?
I saw that a lady from my office change her profile picture soon after her wedding and I fell in love with the style of this photo, so I asked for the name of the photographer. We hadn’t booked our venue at the time so I couldn’t seriously consider it but once we had booked the venue I started looking at other photographers and nothing quite compared to Kirsty’s portfolio.

The dress
My dress is by Sophia & Camilla and came from Bleu Bridal, a beautiful converted barn in Shedfield, near Southampton and Sue, the owner was just lovely, I would recommend her 100%. Sue doesn’t do alterations but recommended Buttons & Bows in Southampton and Shay was brilliant to work with, very quick & great value for money. My shoes were by Rainbow Club & purchased from John Lewis. My veil was borrowed from a friend.

The suit and bridesmaids
The Suits were Tweed (mixed for the Groomsman), hired from Black Tie Bespoke in Crowthorne, we also hired/bought matching shoes for all the groomsman & Dads from the same place. 2 x adult bridesmaid dresses were from Phase Eight. Their jewellery and wraps from from Accessorize. The Junior bridesmaid is wearing a Bridesmaid dress from Dorothy Perkins and shoes and Cardigan are her own.

Theme or colour scheme
Our general inspiration was our summer holidays to Switzerland, so we wanted to incorporate little alpines touches and especially goats into our wedding! Our colour theme was blush pink.

Flowers
Blush roses were the main flower. Other alpine inspired foliage was used.

Decoration
We had bunting in the main barn that was blush, greens & purples. This was about 100 metres main by the mother of the groom. We had 2 x milk churns with tall flower arrangements. We had a hanging heart floral arrangement behind the ceremony table & a foliage arch over the doorway into the main barn. We had wooden boxes for the table centres pieces with Swiss place name signs. We had jars with lace ribbon on the mantel piece in the stable room and various other bunting “Mr & Mrs” & “Just Married”. The barn came pre-lit with fairy lights.

Food
Welcome drinks:White peach Sangria, folled by a mixture of Canapes.
Starter: Smoked bacon Scotch egg, apple puree and crisp pancetta
Maine: Grilled supreme of free-range chicken, goats cheese and pepper stuffing, basil pesto mayonnaise With dauphinoise potato
Dessert: Trio of mini desserts
Evening Food: Pizzas Plus beer drum & popcorn machine

Wedding cake
Made by a family friend this was a 3 tier vanilla, chocolate & lemon. Iced with fondant & goat cake toppers in the style of a Swiss mountain scene. Displayed on a log of wood from a friends garden.

Entertainment
During the day we had a petting zoo, supplied by Millers Ark of Hook, Hampshire. This was wonderful, the service was brilliant and so neat & tidy. We had a band in the evening – The Party Starters Wedding Band and the photographer opened up a photo booth for the evening.

Who supplied the stationery?
We made our invitations inspired by this blog (we used mostly the same paper suppliers) A friend designed the goats and the main motif and we had them made into personalised stamps (The English Stamp Company). We ordered all paper pretty much as per the blog.

Personal touches
Yes, we made the stationary, I decorated the jars on the mantel piece with lace. I made a memorial jar for those who could not be with us. The Grooms Brother & Sister-in-Law made the “Cuckoo Clock” card box. We made the “Guest Who” table entertainment from Poundland travel games and printed photos of our guests and inserted them.

Special moments
Having goats at our wedding! It not raining when we were outside. Going on an adventure with Kirsty our photographer to take sunset shots.

Advice for other couples
Research! Pinterest is your best friend and most things are possible. Make sure you always check with your venue/supplier in advance if you want something unique as every supplier with come with a contract and a fair amount of T’s & C’s that protect both parties.
This is your big day and you’ll only do it once (hopefully!) so don’t be afraid to go for it but only if you can afford it, there’s no point in getting yourself into finance trouble as you’ll only worry about it more.
Ensure if you aren’t decorating it yourself you leave explicit instructions with the venue and go over it so they know what you mean.
For the day itself try & take it all in – it will go very quickly. Make sure you have a very good photographer that will capture all the details as well. Plan some nice things for a few weeks/months afterwards, wedding blues are a real thing!

Biggest surprise
The fact that nothing went wrong! Everything was perfect. It shouldn’t have been a surprise but I’m a bit of a pessimist!
Also, a wedding guest had an Instax camera and asked to take a photo of us at the table signing the register, he asked to go first and handed us the photo; it was the first photo of us as a married couple – so lovely!
