Happy Friday everyone! I am SO happy that’s it’s Friday, as I am getting so excited for Christmas. Today I’m taking Dexter to the pantomime, we are having a Dexter and mummy day, which will be lovely. Tomorrow we are meeting up with all of his cousins for a Christmas party and on Sunday we are off to visit santa, so a full on festive weekend all round! What about you? What have you got planned? This morning I’m taking you back to the early autumn, before all this cold weather struck us with the gorgeous wedding of Amy and Ed. They chose a beautiful barn venue and a soft country theme, with plenty of greenery, hessian, jam jars and bunting. A super pretty wedding, captured by Nicola Gough.
Amy and Ed were married on 9th September, 2017 in a ceremony and reception that took place at Pimhill Barn, Shrewsbury. ‘There were a few reasons why we got married here. We liked the idea of a country theme and wanted somewhere which had heritage and a sense of history to say our vows as neither of us wanted to get married in a church. The barn was very flexible and allowed you to choose your own caters which was a HUGE selling point for us as Amy’s Dad owns his own catering business (Dougherty and Allen). We had 120 guests. Originally, we had intended to have a much smaller wedding but it was never going to happen as we’re both 1 of 4! It took us just under two years to plan.’
How they met
Ed and I went to single sex schools and we met at a joint school disco 13 years ago!
We celebrated our ten-year anniversary with a weekend away in the Cotswolds. Ed waited to propose until the day after our actual anniversary as he wanted it to be a surprise and it certainly was!
How did you allocate your budget?
We researched average costs online and had an excel spreadsheet to help us keep track on how much we were spending.
Where did you splurge and how did you save?
We splurged on our honeymoon. We went to South Africa and Mauritius on a three-week trip which was incredible. We were very lucky because my Dad provided the catering which allowed us to save lots of money.
Why did you choose your photographer?
We met a few photographers but Nicola Gough was the only one who made us feel at ease. She was so much fun to have around on the day and was a huge help! We also had a videographer, Rebecca, who I went to school with, to capture the day and produce a lip synch video which was lots of fun.
My Nan scoped out shops for me before making appointments. I went dress shopping at Liverpool bridal boutique which is just around the corner from her house. On the day of my appointment she picked out an Enzoani Blue dress for me which was very special. Ed bought me a beautiful vintage inspired sapphire necklace for my something blue when we were picking out wedding bands. I picked my cathedral length veil from The Wedding Club in Birmingham whilst picking bridesmaid dresses. I wore my great grandma’s engagement ring as my something old and I haven’t taken it off since! I splurged by buying a pair of Jimmy Choo’s. They were beautiful but my feet didn’t thank me for it!
The Suit and the Bridesmaids
We picked navy lounge suits with Prince of Wales waistcoats from Whitfield and Ward. I picked Alfred Sung dresses from The Wedding Club for my bridesmaids. The girls loved them because they were so comfortable and had pockets for tissues, lip glosses (and chicken nuggets)! We picked flower girl dresses from John Lewis which were very traditional.
Theme or Colour Scheme
We had a country theme. We dressed the bridesmaids in a soft taupe colour. We also used this colour for the velvet ribbon on the button holes and napkin rings.
We had relaxed ivory flowers with lots of foliage from Ivy, Pip and Rose. I had a trailing bouquet for a vintage feel which I felt complemented my dress.
We decorated the venue with bunting, 120 jam jars with candles in which my mum painstakingly individually decorated, hessian table clothes and velvet and hessian table rings which my mum also made.
The food was amazing! Dougherty and Allen had a selection of beautiful canapes during the drink’s reception including sushi rolls, tempura prawns, shepherd’s pie bombs and Cheshire new potatoes with truffle. In the evening we had a beetroot and goat’s cheese starter, followed by Beef Wellington – Ed’s favourite, and a trio of desserts including mini trifles – yum! In the evening we had a farmhouse style buffet with pork pies, cold meats, cheese and chutneys which tied in with the country theme.
Honey’s Bakery which is near my mum’s house, and makes the best full English breakfasts, made our cake which was beautiful. Each layer was a different flavour: chocolate, lemon and carrot and walnut.
We had a band – Nibs and Eddy. They also played acoustic guitar during the drinks reception.
Who supplied the stationery?
Love Invited provided the stationery. Amanda was incredibly patient with me and matches the colours to a Farrow and Ball colour chart.
Ed’s brother played me down the aisle to Canon in D on his classic guitar which was very special. We donated to the ‘Annabel and Martin Fun Run’ Just Giving page for our wedding favours as two of our friends were fundraising in memory of their parents.
Our family and friends put so much effort into making sure we had a perfect day and the joy we felt when everyone applauded after we exchanged vows was completely overwhelming. It really was a perfect moment. We had rain on our wedding day which I know lots of engaged couples fret about, however, everyone was so up for having a good time a bit of rain was never going to get in the way of an amazing day! Plus we never would have got THAT rainbow shot without a bit of rain.
Any advice for other couples
It is really hard to follow this advice and I am completely guilty of not doing this but try not to worry about every tiny detail. It was so exciting seeing our (my) vision come together the day before the wedding when decorating the barn and it was better than I ever could have imagined! The day will go so quickly so try and enjoy every minute of it!
