Advice From the Married Side – Real Brides Advice From Their Wedding Day

This afternoon we are back with our regular feature ‘Advice from the Married Side,‘ real life wedding planning advice from all the lovely brides and grooms I have featured on the blog.

I get to feature so many amazing real weddings here on the blog and with each wedding I ask the couple to share with us their wedding planning knowledge and experiences. This post is a super useful collection of wedding wisdom from those who have just got married, to help you on your own wedding planning journey. I hope there will be something amongst these experiences that help you. Happy Planning!

Getting Organised

  • Make decisions. Book stuff and stick to it. Keep a hold of your budget. And then relax!
  • Have a glass of wine whilst organising the table plan (that was the most stressful thing to sort out!)
  • Try to do as much as you can in advance so that you can enjoy the lead up to the day without being too stressed or rushing around.
  • Book the venue and photographer as soon as you can.
  • Pay attention to the little details a few months ahead of your day and have a plan of action. I am a real perfectionist so actually found that I’d done everything prior to the week leading up to the wedding so there wasn’t much stress at all.
  • A good wedding spreadsheet is very helpful, especially if you keep track of spending on there, and also noting down which gifts came from whom.

Making the day Your Own

  • Do what you want to do – try not to get caught up in what you think others want, or what your family wants. It is your day and you only get one.
  • Remember it’s YOUR day, it is impossible to keep everyone happy so don’t even try, and just enjoy every single moment of it.
  • Don’t get carried away with pinterest! But equally when you pick a theme that you really like and it means something to you, don’t let others deter you.
  • Be yourself. It’s so easy to be swayed by the amazing wedding ideas that you see at fairs and in magazines, but it’s so important to just focus on what’s right for you. Anything is possible.

General Advice

  • Do a speech! I was totally undecided if I would do one and so didn’t tell many people I was planning one, but I’m so glad I did – you never really get a chance to stand up in front of a crowded room and tell people how much they mean you.
  • Everyone says it, but please don’t worry about the weather. We woke up to rain after a week of glorious sunshine and it really didn’t matter one bit.
  • Be flexible! There are going to be things that don’t go as planned.
  • Have a bit of money saved back – this means if you have any unexpected costs then you don’t have to panic and if it’s not used you can put it towards a little something extra – in our case we made a last minute decision to buy wedding favours – mini cactuses and succulents that went down a treat.
  • Don’t over think things, if you’re happy with a supplier or decision you’ve made then stick with it.
  • Invest in a penny saving tin and on the run up to the wedding every time you enter the house pop all of your loose change in there…it soon adds up! This helped us pay for a huge chunk of the honeymoon and we weren’t consciously aware that the money was adding up in the background!
  • Make sure you like your photographer.  Aside from your spouse, that’s who you spend most of your wedding day with.
  • Take a few days off after the wedding even if you aren’t going on honeymoon straight away. I don’t know if it’s the emotions or the day itself but we were completely exhausted for a good 3 days after the wedding. Plus, its just nice to sit together and reminisce over the day for a while with each other and your family and friends.

Planning

  • See it as a year long experience not a day. It helps justify the cost! Every weekend we went back ‘home’ to do planning meant we got to spend more time with our families.
  • Enjoy being engaged. Honestly, every moment you see your fiancé doesn’t need to be about the wedding. Take the opportunities to put the planning aside and enjoy the leg of your journey that you are presently on.
  • Plan as much you can in advance and make sure multiple people know the plan in detail.
  • Invest in a small wedding planning book that has a checklist, this helped us massively as there were things on it that I didn’t think about at first!
  • Keep some of your budget aside for the last couple of weeks before the big day you will spend all sorts on things you never thought of to include in your budget!

On The day of the Wedding

  • Take a couple of minutes every hour to look around with your partner to bank some memories and have a moment to really appreciate what is around you.
  • Also, leave yourself extra time to get things done on the wedding day. Luckily, I am very good at time management and everything ran it’s course exactly when it needed to but if I had not set out specific times I feel like it would have been a lot more stressful.
  • Ensure you see and enjoy everything that you’ve done as it’s so easy to miss the little things.
  • Have a timetable for the day so that your suppliers and your MC, or best man, can keep things to time and you have plenty of time for the dancing, which was a priority for us!
