Boho Loves: Mythos Weddings – Planning Your Dream Greek Wedding

When the weather is cold, dark and foggy, as it is at the moment, what better time to think about a destination wedding! Today we are introducing you to Mythos Weddings a Greek run company planning weddings on the beautiful island of Cephalonia, as well as Ithaca and Zante. Having planned a destination wedding, I know the importance of finding the right wedding planner to help you plan your big day. The logistics of trying to do it all yourself when you are based in a different country can be challenging. Knowing you have a planner with local knowledge and years of experience behind them will put your mind at rest and make the planning process so much more enjoyable.

‘MYTHOS GROUP COUNTS MORE THAN 30 YEARS OF EXPERIENCE IN WEDDINGS. BASED ON CEPHALONIA AND RUN BY LOCALS, IT STARTED FROM BIG GREEK WEDDING RECEPTIONS BUT FELT THE NEED OF FOREIGN COUPLES TO EXPERIENCE A UNIQUE WEDDING DAY IN THE BEAUTIFUL SURROUNDINGS OF THIS MAGICAL ISLAND’

WE ASKED CAROL FROM MYTHOS WEDDINGS TO TELL US MORE ABOUT THE BUSINESS…

What made you start your business?
Mythos Group counts more than 30 years of experience in weddings. Based on Cephalonia and run by locals, it started from big Greek wedding receptions but felt the need of foreign couples to experience a unique wedding day in the beautiful surroundings of this magical island. So in 2007 Mythos Weddings was born to provide full wedding services to couples from all over the word mostly on Cephalonian island but also in Ithaca and Zante. This is when I am introduced to Mythos family as the company’s event manager

When did you start?
2007

What sort of geographical area do you cover?
Full wedding services to couples from all over the word mostly on Cephalonian island but also in Ithaca and Zante

What were you doing before?
I was born in New York in 1982 by Cephalonian parents but lived on the island since the age of seven. At 18 I left to study philosophy in the University of Patras. Then I continued my studies in Athens taking a masters degree in Philosophy. I started my PhD on moral philosophy cultivating at the same time my favorite hobbies – painting and sketching- that helped me develop aesthetic criteria. Meanwhile I was working as a teacher in a primary school. After a few years, I decided to return to the island where I grew up. There, I found Mythos Weddings. I was already aware of it, that is, via Vasilis (one of Mythos Group’s owners) who is my friend for many years. When he offered me the position of the wedding planner I accepted without hesitation. And so far, I have not regretted it.

What is your biggest achievement so far?
When you combine the Mediterranean temperament, the Greek hospitality, honesty and high professionalism then one of your weddings can be concerned by the guests as “the wedding of the century”. Our biggest achievement so far, one of the most challenging tasks Mythos team had to respond to, took place in July 2015. The couple is residing in Australia , has no idea where to start planning there wedding on the other side of the world. For guests from all over the world (different parts of Europe and the USA). Mythos team based in Cephalonia. And we all had to meet in Ithaca island. We are talking about 100 people, not a small wedding! We had to ship the whole team at a different island making sure that both couple and guests wouldn’t feel the greatness of this distance and the level of difficulty of the occasion they were attending! A thousand of things can go wrong in such occasions. But when you have the experience and patience, any difficulties and misfortunes that may arise can be surpassed and the result is always a stress free day for the couple and an interesting initiation in the Greek culture of all those people coming from different parts of the world.
As Greeks we are always happy to share our culture with our couples and give a Greek touch and feeling to their special day. But we are also very respectful towards different cultures. So when one of our couples from Latvia and Slovakia came to us for their wedding, they wanted to do it in THEIR own traditional way but in a Greek background. We were good listeners and understanding and we managed to support AND participate in all those lovely foreign wedding “rituals”. Flexibility, understanding and genuine respect of difference are qualities that Persons who are good Professionals have.

What makes you different to your competitors?
And I believe that our couples do feel the enthusiasm, passion and hard work behind the good result. My couples describe me as “enthusiastic”, “understanding”, “organized & clearly [a person who] loves what she does”, “likeable”, with a “friendly and warm nature”, “fun and bubbly but smart and serious about delivering the wedding celebration” a couple wants, “prompt”, “informative”, with a “high quality experience”, “honest”, “helpful”, “reassuring when some things did not go to plan”. I think what makes me different from other wedding planners is described in one of my bride’s sentences: “No one will EVER find a wedding planner with such skill, professionalism, personality, enthusiasm, friendliness and contagious laughter then Carol!”, or as one of my grooms summarized in the title of his testimonial “Prompt, Personal, Professional”. None of that, of course, could happen if I didn’t have a powerful and dedicated team to help me realize our couple’s wishes. Mythos team is a family. We know each other, work together for many years and know each other’s thoughts and movements before they are even expressed. So I guess the sort of people I attract are the ones that want a Person that is also a good Professional and has a trustworthy, super team supporting her.

What do you enjoy most about your job?
To the contrary, I love my job because it gives me the joy to see on a daily basis, eyes full of love, smiling faces, and people devoted to each other. The greatest pleasure that this job offers me is the chance to be part of a couple’s happiest moments. But I cannot hide it, what really makes me passionate is the challenge: organizing a wedding isn’t as easy as it may look judging from the result. A good result comes only from hard work, the ability to overcome difficulties, to surpass challenges, to be creative and understanding at the same time.

What sort of couple do you think you attract?
I believe that our couples do feel the enthusiasm, passion and hard work behind the good result.

What would be your ideal wedding to work on?
If anybody asked me whether there is an ideal wedding to work on, I would answer that there is no such wedding! Each wedding is ideal because it is unique and we treat it that way. Everything is tailor made and highly personalized, from the aesthetic touch to the budget!

What is your ideal way to spend a day off?
What do I do and who am I when I don’t work? That’s a question I get very often. First of all, I do not have day offs! Wherever there is WiFi, I am working. It is impossible to receive an e-mail and ignore it or postpone the answer. That’s why when I ask my couples why they chose Mythos weddings, one of the standard answers is “swift, prompt and accurate responses”!

What can you never leave the house without?
I would never leave the house without my eyeglasses and my phone!

Who would be your 5 dream dinner guests dead or alive?
My 5 dream dinner guests would be: Oscar Wilde, Socrates, Peter Sellers, Freud and my favourite female singer

What would you do if you won the lottery?
If I won the lottery I would spend half to charity and the other half to trips. After that, I would go back to work!

If you weren’t running your business, what would you be doing?
If they didn’t accept me back, I would probably be singing (my brides are my fans!) or teaching again.
