Katie and Shaun’s Handmade Art Deco Wedding. By Beth Moseley Photography

Yay it’s Friday the weekend is upon us. I’m trying to ignore the fact that it’s Friday 13th and crack on with the fact that it’s Valentines day tomorrow instead! Have you got anything planned? Every day is Valentines day here at Boho HQ as we surround ourselves with romance and beautiful love stories and todays is no exception. Katie and Shaun created a beautiful Art Deco inspired wedding that went on all weekend long. They carried out a number of handmade and handcrafted projects to get just the right look for their vintage day and the results I’m sure you will agree are gorgeous. Big thanks to Beth Moseley Photography for the images.

‘The highlight of our life so far. Most amazing fun, with all of our favourite people’

Katie and Shaun were married on Friday 1 August 2014 at Gunthorpe Hall, Melton Constable, Norfolk. ‘We loved the setting of the venue, a big country house with beautifully manicured grounds. The interior of the hall is very quirky with bags of character. We also wanted a weekend wedding, wanted to bring our own alcohol and a venue that would let us party for as long as we wanted. Gunthorpe Hall ticked all the boxes. We had 120 day time guests and an extra 40 guests in the evening and it took 1 and 1/2 years to plan.

How they met
We studied Geography together at university and were best friends. We went out for 9 months and broke up. Four years later we met at a university reunion and we have been together since, now 7 and a half years.

The Proposal
We were at my parents for the weekend for our joint 30th birthday party. The morning before the party, the sun was shining and Shaun decided that it would be the perfect time to propose. He took me to my Nan’s beach hut as he told me we had to collect something for my mum. As I went to open the beach hut he got down on one knee and proposed. I was speechless for once in my life and so surprised. The engagement ring was stunning, he had bought me an original art deco ring from the 1930’s.

How did you allocate your budget
We prioritised on the most important things which would make the day special, enjoyable and fun; the band, venue, marquee, alcohol to make it a really fun party.

How did you choose your photographer
Beth was recommended by another photographer that we made an enquiry with. We are so happy that we met Beth and that she shared our day with us.

The Dress
My dress was by Provonias and I got alterations to make it bespoke and to give it a more vintage feel. My shoes were from Whistles and my vintage art deco earrings and bracelet by Louise – JBD London.

The Suit and Bridesmaids
The suit was an electric blue “Cut” range suit from Austin Reed, with shoes and belt from Russell and Bromley, knitted silk tie and silk hanky from Doherty, Evans and Stott. The bridesmaid dress was from Jigsaw and little bridesmaid from John Lewis.

Theme or Colour Scheme
The theme was inspired by art deco, as that is our favourite design period. At home we have furniture and posters of that period, as well as my engagement ring.

Flowers
My bouquet was made up of large light coloured peach roses and white hydrangeas. The table flowers were large bunches of blue hydrangeas on vintage glass cake stands. The groom had a blue hydrangea button hole and white hydrangeas or peach roses for the wedding party.

Decoration
We had a mix of vintage cut glass bowls and vases, which we bought from boot fairs and second hand shops. We filled them with tea lights, as we loved how the light reflected and twinkled. We used cut glass cake stands with hydrangeas as the centrepiece and added decanters filled with brandy on each of the tables. The marquee had a cream lining and had our lace bunting hung loosely from the ceiling. We made our own bar sign, and set out a large table full of homemade cakes….mmm. The cakes were all displayed on different vintage cake stands.

Food
Cheese soufflé, roast filet of beef with dauphinoise potatoes and vegetables, for dessert the home made cakes from our family and friends.

Wedding Cake
My friend’s mum made the wedding cake with cup cakes to match. My Uncle also made us a three tier wedding cake as a surprise. I didn’t even know that he could bake, it was a wonderful surprise. He even added blue hydrangeas to match the table decorations!

Entertainment
We hired a 9 piece band from London and Shaun and our friends’ DJ’d late in the evening.

Buy or DIY your Stationery
We designed and printed our own stationery. This included save the dates, invitations, order of the day, table numbers and menus. Our friend Jo designed our drinks menu and table plan to match our bar sign and stationery.

Personal or Handmade Touches
We did the whole wedding ourselves with the help of our family and friends.
We made 100m of lace bunting, large blackboard with art deco design border for the order of the day, bar sign and stationery (all art deco fonts), cake stands – using original art deco plates, decorated jam jars with lace, wooden signs around the venue – stencilled with art deco fonts, cones for confetti and flower petal confetti. We bought all of the vintage cut glass, decanters, table cloths and cake stands second hand to give it that vintage feel. We also bought an old suit case for cards and vintage photo frames to display pictures of our parents and grandparents on their wedding day.
The table numbers were made up of numbers that were relevant to us; the number of the beach hut where Shaun proposed, the number of years we have been together etc. We also created a quiz for each table with random stories about us, which was a great way to get our guests talking.
We had a BBQ the day after our wedding and made additional signs and games for that too, even a seafood stall for my Dad.
We really enjoyed making everything for our wedding as it gave it that personal and vintage feel. Since the wedding I have come up an idea for a wedding business which, looks at specific vintage eras, making them more authentic to that era rather than a generic vintage theme. So watch this space.

Special Moments
The whole day was amazing and the whole day (and weekend) was a highlight really. Special moments included waking up with the whole wedding party in one place – the atmosphere the morning of the wedding was great with everyone in the house buzzing around, getting married in the beautiful grounds of Gunthorpe Hall with the sun shining, the speeches and dancing to the band and looking around to see that nearly all of the guests were dancing.

Advice to other couples
Make sure you leave yourself plenty of time, especially if you intend on making things yourself. Do not underestimate how long it will take. Keep lots of to do lists and create an agenda for the day early on, so that you can get your head around all the timings throughout the day.

Biggest surprise
The speeches – they were all amazing.
