Leanna and Ben were married on 5th April 2014. The ceremony was in Woodingdean, Brighton and the reception was located in Pulborough the ‘Fitzleroi barn’ ‘We really wanted something different and vintage looking so we looked at several barns but this one really stood out for us, it’s on a working farm, the views and location are incredible they were amazingly helpful and provided an excellent level of service what also sold it to us was the fact it was private and we had the barn for the whole weekend so we were able to go up on the Friday and make it extra special buy putting all our little touches to it. We had 90 guests all day and an extra 45 for just the evening reception. It took us Roughly 9 months to plan.’

How they met
We have been just friends for years then lost contact and when we re-connected we realised there was more to our friendship and the rest is history we have been together for two years now.

The Proposal
it was a complete surprise! It was just a random Friday and he picked me up at lunch time from work, we went down to the beautiful downs at Devils dyke near Brighton we had a lovely little picnic and he also brought a big chest full of presents, at this point I still had no clue, the presents were cute little bits such as a dress, some of my favourite sweets a new purse etc but wrapped up amongst it all was a little black box, as soon as I unwrapped it I started to well up because I knew what it was, when I opened the box there was the most beautiful ring, absolutely perfect! And a tiny note saying “will you be Mrs Cornelius?” I just started crying with happiness! It was the most perfect day ever!

How did you allocate your budget
We had some savings plus our families were amazing with supporting us, we tried to be really organised in our budget and shop around to get the most for our money. We utilised sites such as ebay and independent wedding shops online.

How did you choose your photographer
For our photographer we wanted something extra special who would really capture the style of our wedding, I found Sasha in a wedding magazine when looking at recommended photographers for a vintage style wedding, when I visited her web page we were blown away with her style of natural photos, she was incredibly helpful and professional, we wanted natural photos but that were captured in a professional way which she achieved perfectly

The Dress
My dress is from a small boutique wedding dress shop in Brighton called ‘White leaf’ made by a local designer. My shoes were ‘Kurt Geiger’ and accessories were ‘swarovski’.

The Suit and Bridesmaids
Bens Suit was from ‘Reiss’ and tailored by ‘Gresham and Blake’. The knitted burgundy tie was from Primark, we were looking everywhere for what we wanted ended up finding the perfect one in Primark 4 pounds! Shoes were from next. Bridesmaid Tea dresses were from a small company I found online called ‘Lady Vintage’. They have a page on eBay the dresses were exactly what I was looking for I also brought white full petticoats from eBay. Shoes were from ‘New look’.

Theme or Colour Scheme
We didn’t really have a colour scheme exactly but we wanted that vintage old fashion look so lots of burgundy, grey, mustard, olive green and browns.

Flowers
I didn’t have any fresh flowers at all, the flowers at the venue were all dried flowers scattered to give that rustic look, my bouquet was a broach bouquet which I made out of old broaches, earrings and lace I added in some special pieces from family too it was so sparkly! The bridesmaids had little bouquets that we made out of old books we ripped sheets of old books and made them into little roses. The button holes I made out of fake flowers a mix of cream and burgundy with burgundy ribbon.

Decoration
We wanted it to be different and we wanted a real vintage and rustic feel, so each table had a different theme on which ranged from typewriter, sewing machine and tea pot and tea cups etc it was a little scene on each table along the top table we had dried flowers scattered. As we were in the beautiful barn all around the beams were fairy lights we also scattered around the room we placed wooden hearts woven with fairy lights along with the candles it made the most romantic mood lighting. I placed little signs and quotes around the room such as ‘love you to the moon and back’ every nock and cranny had something personalised!

Food
Upon arrival people were served a mix of olives meats and tasty bits we hired an old fashioned popcorn cart so everyone had a paper cone filled with popcorn served with preseco with hibiscus flowers in the glass. For starter we just had variety of breads and different oils to dip for main we had Rustic individual pies, beef and juniper or fish pie with a variety of flavoured mash and salad on each table so people could choose exactly what they wanted. The children had sausage and mash. For dessert we had the choice of sticky toffee pudding and fizzy berry panacotta. In the evening we had sausage ciabatta rolls and the vegeteirian option the caterer we hired was called Darcys catering excellent on the day providing a high level

Wedding Cake
A colleague from work made it for us. As a sideline she makes cakes for special events. We had a two tear cake with a light olive green icing, lace around the edging and a cluster of cream icing flowers on the top. The flavours of the cakes were carrot and chocolate fudge.

Entertainment
We had a photo booth set up which everyone loved, as there were funny props and it just got everyone laughing. They could keep a copy of the photos and also put one into our guest books we thought it’s a nice keepsake for us and our guests. We also hired a DJ he was excellent! We gave him a playlist which he followed but he also mixed his own songs all which were our taste. For our first dance we had a close friend of ours called Tom Fitzpatrick he is a professional crooner and sang ‘You make me feel so young’ by Frank Sinatra live for us to dance to.

Buy or DIY your Stationery
We made majority of our own bits the only items we got professionally made were our invitations we had them made so they looked like an old fashioned penguin books. Apart from that we made everything else ourselves we made the table plan using a frame and we find some paper that had printed on it old Penguin books we used as a backing then printed the seating plan onto open book shaped cream card. We made name placements by getting brown parcel tags and stamping each name on to give that vintage typewriter effect we then tied so lace to the corner and attached a small bunch of dried lavender and baby breath.

Personal or Handmade Touches
-We had a small table display with a sign that said family on it and photos of each of our parents and grandparents at their wedding.
-We also had a sweet table which had a vintage looking sign hanging saying sweets I placed a sign on the table saying “love is sweet come and take a treat” we had ten glass jars of all different shapes and sizes of our favourite sweets, little old fashioned stripy sweet bags and little scoops a tongs for the sweets.
-We also had a table with an old fashioned vintage suitcase on open filled with lace with a vintage sign hanging from it saying ‘cards’ for all our cards and presents.
-In the ladies toilets we had a little basket full of handy toiletries for the ladies to help themselves.
-In the room next to the barn we had a couple of games we made one where we had tiny envelopes with each year up to ten and people wrote down little tips for each year of marriage and we can’t open them until we reach that year.
-We also had little luggage labels for people to write down date night ideas for us.
Another idea we used was that we had a few children in the day for our wedding they were all under three and we didn’t want them to get bored sitting for a long time during speeches etc, so we brought canvas bags with the letter of their name printed on and filled the with stickers, colouring books, pencils etc.

Special Moments
Every second was special and amazing it’s hard to just point out one moment. But for me when I was sitting on the top table next to my now husband looking out at all my close friends enjoying our special day with us and seeing that all the hard work we had done for the wedding had come out such a success was just a highlight.

Advice to other couples
The best bit of advice I could give is be as organised as you can write lists for lists! Buy a note book and carry it around everywhere so if you see anything inspirational you can make a note. Just remember it’s you as a couple’s special day, do it how you want to not how everyone else does.

Biggest surprise
Just how perfect everything was it was the most magical day of our lives.
