Sarah and Andy’s Magical Boho Ibiza Wedding. By Ana Lui

I have a gorgeous Ibiza wedding for you today which was sent into me by the Ibiza bride Sarah. Sarah is a regular reader of the blog and contacted me a while ago to tell me she was getting married in Ibiza, she told me about her plans and asked if I would like to blog it, nothing like a prepared bride! So I was delighted when she got back in contact after the wedding with the photos, courtesy of the wonderful Ana Lui. The wedding brought back some happy memories as I planned a wedding at Atzaro her venue back in 2011 and had the best time! Atazro is still one of the most popular and beautiful spots to get married in Ibiza and you will see by these photos why. Congratulations to Sarah and Andy on a beautiful day, you certainly got married in style!

‘A very spiritual, magical and memorable day shared with only our closest friends and family at one of the most beautiful venues in Ibiza.’

Sarah and Andy who were married on 9th May at Atzaro Ibiza. ‘We got engaged in Ibiza in Aug 2011 on a cliff overlooking Es Vedra and the island holds a special place in our heart after many memorable holidays so we thought there was nowhere better to tie the knot! We had 30 guests and it took a year and a half to plan.’

How they met
We met in a small nightclub in Hertford, Herts in 2008. We have been together 4 and a half years

The proposal
We were on holiday in Ibiza and Andy took me on a journey around the island which resulted in us reaching the viewing point for the mystical Es Vedra rock. He made me climb up a very steep hill in 30 degree heat until we reached the top and was able to take in spectacular views of the sea and Es Vedra. After absorbing the view for a couple of minutes I then turned around and Andy was on one knee holding a small blue Tiffany box!

Why did you choose your photographer?
We carried out lots of research into different photographers available on the island of Ibiza and having looked through many online galleries Ana’s photos really stood out to us and we loved their vibrancy and the intimate moments she captured. After initial enquiries, very prompt responses and clear information we received from Ana we was really impressed by not only her professionalism, but also her friendliness and warmness towards us. I could tell that she was genuinely a really nice person and when we met her for the first time we knew we had made the right decision from booking her to photograph our wedding.

Theme or colour scheme
I knew I wanted hot pink / fuchsia flowers but I was keen to steer away from an actual theme. I’ve always been attracted to Indian weddings and I wanted to try and incorporate some of the colours and vibrancy of these weddings into my own. As the wedding was in Ibiza I felt it difficult at times to really be able to make my mark and go all out on decorations etc, however I realised that I could make these touches through the wedding stationary i.e table names / name places etc and I tried to add as much colour as I could.

Flowers and Decoration
Hot pink / fuchsia peonies and roses. We didn’t need to go all out on flowers as Atzaro is already so beautiful and has fabulous gardens and backdrops. We definitely felt in our situation that less was more and we knew the photos would look amazing even with minimal decorations. We had rose petals as confetti during our ceremony. Also rose petals on the dining tables.

Personal / DIY touches
• I came up with an alternative idea for a guest book which was the ‘send us a postcard’ table. We decided to make a nice feature of this and I had invested quite some time into finding an old vintage travel case and decorated it with some travel stickers from places we have visited making it very personal to us.
• We also gathered together some old photos of our parents and grandparents weddings and for us this was important as it recognised and remembered those who sadly are no longer with us and made them a part of our day whilst also acknowledging that we have come from the love our parents have shared with each other.
• When we got to Ibiza we went and bought a number of Ibiza postcards, again to make it personal to our time in Ibiza and we plan to make a feature frame with all of our handwritten postcards.
• We also made our ‘happy tears hankies’ bucket of vintage hankies for the ceremony. Again I sourced the hankies from vintage fairs and markets and everyone loved them. And they actually came in use for all the tears on the day!
• We was keen to incorporate our love for Ibiza into our day so along with our stationary designer, In The Treehouse, we came up with the idea to have the table names as ibiza club names and we had escort cards in the form of little club tickets which led each guest to their table. Jenny at In The Treehouse also tailor made me some name place flags which I then fitted around different colour cocktail umbrellas. They looked so great on the table! We decided on glow sticks for our favours and thought they would make a great impact in the evening shots. Jenny made us some glow stick covers which read ‘Love Glows’ on them. They went down very well with all of our guests! I made the table plan frame myself and gathered different ribbons and some fabric to set it off.

Special moments
People say your wedding day is one of the best days of your life, and sometimes it sounds cheesy, but it really was the best day of our life. We had a great few days staying with our friends and family at Atzaro in the lead up to our wedding. We took everyone out to sunset strip for a night out before the wedding and also to a beach club and really made the most of our time there together.
As for the wedding day itself, we would have to say that the ceremony was extremely special. Our officiator Jon Michell did an amazing job and provided us with a really alternative, but spiritual and memorable ceremony which really captured for us what our marriage was all about – love! He made our family and friends laugh, cry and smile all at the same time.

Biggest surprise
There was a few surprises!
Definitely how much my husband spoilt me! When I went to my room to start getting ready I had 2 lovely gifts waiting for me. An engraved Tiffany bracelet to wear on the day, along with some diamanté bridal knickers which said ‘The Mrs’ on the back. I was so happy when I opened them and it was lovely to be able to wear some personally picked items from Andy on the day. He managed to make me feel even more special on the day!
The other surprise was how quick it all went and how soon it was all over. It’s so important to savour every moment on the day and I felt really lucky by having a small wedding I was able to spend a decent amount of time with my guests and my husband.
One of the main things though which surprised me was how little I suddenly cared about all the minor things I had been previously stressing out about in the lead up to the wedding. On the day itself I just wanted to get on with things and enjoy it and suddenly those things which seemed major in the lead up seemed really insignificant on the day. Not everything will go 100% as you want it to, but trust me on the day you really won’t mind as much!

Advice
• I would say its important to take your time with the planning and allow yourself enough time to fully enjoy it without getting too stressed in the lead up to it. I had 1.5 years which I felt was perfect for planning a wedding in Ibiza. It not only gave me enough time but we was also able to give our friends and family a good years notice to allow for them to prepare to be able to come away with us to Ibiza. I had considered using wedding planners in Ibiza to manage the whole event, however on reflection of costs I decided to have a go myself and it worked out fine.
• You also need to make life easy on yourself and think about the logistics of everything. Atzaro was a perfect venue for us. It allowed everything to take place under one roof and had the added benefit of rooms for our family and friends to stay there too. I’m so glad on reflection that I didn’t have to orchestrate people getting to numerous different places on the day. I feel that everything ran seamlessly because of my venue choice.
• It took me a long time to decide on having someone to do my hair and make up but it was truly the best decision I ever made. I was reluctant to pay extra for this when I believed I could do it myself but I am so glad I finally opted to book the Smack Ibiza girls. They did an amazing job and made me, my bridesmaid and Mum feel absolutely amazing on the day. They took the stress out of everything and when I look at the photos now I am so happy I changed my mind on this.
• Planning a wedding, especially a wedding abroad, can be a real test and an emotional roller-coaster. We experienced let downs and not everything went exactly to plan in the lead up to going to Ibiza. It’s important to take time out for yourselves and relax and spend quality time together before the wedding. We tried to keep every Sunday in our diary free in the lead up for pure relax time and no wedding talk!
• Finally – stick to your guns and what you want to do. It’s your wedding and it’s time to be a bit selfish! We knew we would have had more guests and probably slightly less stress if we had wed in the UK, but ultimately it wasn’t what we wanted. We knew we were taking a risk by doing it abroad and knew some people wouldn’t be able to come, but ultimately it’s your day and about you both and it’s important to have things how you want and not what others may expect from you. Your wedding day should be a reflection of you both and should incorporate your own style and personalities. Don’t lose sight of who you are and what you want.

Sarah is a very good friend of mine and I was so glad I was able to share this special day with her and Andy. It was a fabulous, well planned wedding and totally reflected the Bride & Groom’s personalities and style! I’m just sad it’s all over as I want them to do it all over again next year! x
