Ross and Abbie’s 1930’s Themed London Wedding with a Boat Trip down The Thames planned by The Bijou Bride

I have taken you all around the world this week, Ibiza, Italy, Canada, Hawaii, so it seemed only right to end this weeks journey back in England in the heart of our fine capital, London! This wedding hasn’t been sent to me by the Photographer but by the planner and stylist, Alex from The Bijou Bride! Alex worked hard to pull together this 1930’s Chinoiserie themed wedding, and it is full of fantastic props, decoration and details. As a planner myself I know how hard to manage guests in 3 different locations within one wedding but she did it with ease.

The lovely couple are Abbie and Ross who were married on 22nd September 2012. ‘The ceremony was held at Chelsea Registry Office followed by a boat trip on the Edwardian to our final private member’s venue, The Battery Club at Canary Wharf for the reception. As Londoners, we wanted to make the most of the city’s stunning views and landscape, we had 120 guests and it took 9 months to plan.’

How they met
We met through internet dating and have been together for three years

The proposal
Ross took me away on our 2nd year anniversary to the Waldorf Astoria in Syon Park, London. Each guest receives a key to a secret garden in Syon Park and this is where we went for a walk and Ross proposed by the lake.

The dress
I had my dress made by a dressmaker who specialised in Cheogsams, it was inspired by a design I had seen in Shanghai Tang but with my own touches. Shoes were from Dune and Jewellery I already had from a long time ago (something old).

The suit
Ross’s suit was from Ben Sherman.

Theme or colour scheme
I am half Chinese and Ross is English so we had orchids and roses as the flowers, all light pastel colours and wild looking to go with my dress which was off white vintage lace.

Flowers
Orchids and Roses by Hattie at That Flower Shop in Shoreditch London. The style was very vintage and wild which I loved.

Decoration
I worked with my wedding stylist, Alex at Bijou Bride to create mood boards for the boat and venue. We had 30inch balloons in red and white with handmade tassles, paper pom poms in red white and gold, birdcages with orchids intertwined and several sepia photos of myself and Ross in vintage frames dotted around the venue next to tea lights and bud vases. We also had pictures of our passed grandparents set up by a wishing tree which was decorated with jewels and candles.

How did you choose your photographer?
Luckily our friend Tai Adedayo is a photographer for his company Love Exposed

Food
We had Prosecco and nibbles on the boat then we had a selection of bowl food and desserts at the venue. Bowl food included: slow cooked beef cheeks, fish & chips, pork crackling with apple sauce and chocolate fondant

Entertainment
We had a wonderful 2 piece band singing 1950’s style – Kitty Le Roar and Nick of Time

Special moments
All of it! The ceremony was so beautifully intimate and coming out to confetti showers on the Kings Road was so much fun. We had a confetti shower as we boarded the boat at Cadogan Pier which was lovely and the boat ride was really so unique for us and many of our friends. The venue had stunning 180 degree views of the London skyline which was another highlight for us and our guests when we arrived, it was great to see everyone’s reactions.

Biggest surprise
How UNSTRESSED I was! I was so happy and excited, that all the silly things I had got wound up about in the run up totally disappeared and became unimportant. The second surprise was the sunny, warm weather considering it had rained in the days running up.

Advice
Ross and I started out by saying “we aren’t going to do this and we aren’t going to do that because we want to be different” but in the end we must have fallen into every stereotypical aspect of planning a wedding. This was because it was actually easier to go with the proven formulas…we realised they are there for a reason and that’s to make life easier!
As much as you might try not to get stressed, you more than likely will but that’s ok because it is the biggest day of your life…just try to go with it.
Expect your budget to double from the first figure you have come up with before looking at anything…I was on a strict budget but there are so many beautiful wedding ideas out there it is so hard not to give in to a couple of them!
