Boho Loves: Cakes By Beth and Her Award winning Cake!

Today I am singing the praises of one of my lovely sponsors Cakes By Beth. Beth emailed me a couple of weeks ago to tell me she had some good news and would I like to tell my readers about it? We British are very good at drumming down our achievements, but I am a firm believer of shouting from the rooftops if you have achieved something great or want to pat yourself on the back, so it’s great to share the success of suppliers that I know and love.

For those of you who love cake and sugar craft, you may know of the Cake International  competition which is usually held in Birmingham but this time was held in London.

Beth entered this year and she came 2nd! which for her first competition is pretty amazing! and here’s the winning cake!

Here are a few pictures of the award-winning cake and a few words from beth to tell us a bit more about the journey of the cake.

‘Cake International, is the prestigious show all about cake designs and cake supplies, live demonstrations and famous names in the industry, all under one roof. The show is normally held at the NEC in Birmingham each November but this year is the first year it was held at a second venue earlier in the year, the ExCel Arena in London’s Docklands.’

‘I normally try to attend the show as a visitor, browsing, shopping and admiring  but this time, I decided to enter a design myself. I have never entered a cake into a competition before so I was very nervous about it all. I wanted to create a design that was fresh and modern, interesting and pretty, and also something that couples would actually order, as well as something that demonstrated a range of skills to the judges.’

‘After a lot of thinking, I decided to go for a classic four tiered cake but with a twist in that the base tier would be a different shape. I also loved the idea of using fresh, Springtime colours and a fabric theme. I love fabric-inspired details on cakes and felt that this was a great way to add lots of exciting details that all tied together.’

This was my initial design sketch:

‘This cake is modern, it’s totally me and is based on one from my 2012 collection, plus isn’t unlike a cake I’m making for a couple this summer, and it won so that makes me feel even better ‘

‘Here are a few shots of the cake being constructed in my studio’

‘And so, after many, many hours of creating flowers and other details, here is the finished cake!’

‘ I have never entered a cake into a competition before and the fact they had three top judges scrutinising every detail of it gave me a good few sleepless nights…so I was absolutely over the moon!   I was so nervous about entering, especially as it was a big haul to go to London with the cake. We were absolutely over the moon about it, what an amazing weekend! I’ve got the bug now though and can’t wait to get planning my next competition entry. It’s definitely a pleasure-pain thing but overall, well worth it!’
