Well here we are Friday, am I happy to see you! How are you all? Have you made it through the week in one piece? I hope you have some fun things planned this weekend, whether it be wedding related or if you are having a weekend off all the planning. I am finishing off the week with this pretty damn gorgeous Texas Family Farm Wedding. Kathryn and Trevor knew they wanted to hold their wedding at Kathryn’s family farm, especially as they needed to find somewhere big enough for their 250 guests. They filled their outdoor ceremony and stunning marquee with so many wonderful rustic and natural touches. From the earthy toned flowers, to the wood signage and table pan to the pie tower that took the place of the traditional wedding cake. Every inch of this wedding is filled with so much attention to detail, all captured perfectly by Grant Daniels Photography.
Kathryn and Trevor were married on 29th May 2017 at Kathryn’s family farm in Brenham, Texas. ‘We always knew we would get married at our family farm. It is a very special, sacred place for us and our family. We had around 250 guests, it took 6 months to plan our wedding, but the mother of the bride had really been planning for years.’
How they met
Trevor and I met during the summer of 2013. We were on summer staff at a Young Life camp in northern California, both working on the ropes course. We dated for three years (a year of that was long distance), before getting engaged.
Trevor planned a beautiful proposal overlooking the ocean in Malibu, California, where I went to college. Our families and close friends were there to celebrate with us. Trevor had compiled a gorgeous book of letters from all my loved ones that brought me to tears. It was such a special day!
Where did you splurge and where did you save?
We made budgeting decisions based on what was going to create a greatest sense of hospitality and celebration for our guests. I would recommend that as a family, you discuss openly so that everyone is on the same page, and then share what is most important to you as a couple. We wanted to have amazing food and a killer band, so we spent big on those things. Instead of going with an expensive wedding cake with an intricate design, we chose to serve pie and banana pudding, which our guests loved! It’s all about deciding what is most important to you as a couple, and then budgeting based on that.
How did you choose your photographer?
As soon as I saw Grant Daniels’ work on Instagram, I knew we had to have him as our wedding photographer. His photography is beautiful, but what makes him even more special is how intentional he is to get to know every couple and bring their story to light through his photos.
My dress is from BHLDN. My wedding boots were custom made by Maida’s in Houston.
The suit and bridesmaids
The bridesmaids dresses were varying styles of Show me Your Mumu dresses in a light grey, and the groom and groomsmen wore navy blue Michael Kors suits.
Theme or colour scheme
We wanted our colors to blend well with the surrounding hill country, so we kept the color palette neutral with natural linens and wood, with accents of steel blue, caramel, butter yellow and gray. All the bouquets were tied with hand dyed Silk and Willow blue indigo ribbon, which was also used as sashes for the flower girls’ dresses. The La Tovola linen napkins were Wedgwood, which was used as the color throughout our stationary suite, signage, and programs.
We wanted our flowers to look like we walked out into the pasture and picked them ourselves. My hand tied bouquet was a free-flowing, muted palette with soft pops of caramel, café au lait and cream and consisted of antique garden roses, white ranunculus, white anemones and straw flowers. The bridesmaids’ bouquets were smaller versions of my bouquet, and the boutonnieres were all mismatched floral selections from the bridal bouquet combined with wheat, snowberry, olive and bay leaf and hand-tied with blue suede cord.
We wanted our flowers for the outdoor ceremony to look as though they had grown there naturally. The back of aisle décor was long wooden boxes overflowing with feathergrass, potted plants, cattail, cream, butterscotch and white florals including combo roses, larkspur, lizianthus and snap dragons.
A Sperry tent was the perfect place for dinner and dancing after the outdoor ceremony: the tall wooden posts, sailcloth canopies and bistro lighting were perfect for the elegant, rustic vibe we wanted. We accented the space with a mix of round tables with natural linens and wooden farm tables. Each table had different centerpieces; some in footed pottery compotes, others with collections of brown glass bud vases. The farm tables were adorned with garland and brass lanterns with candles. Wooden chargers were used on the linen cloths and Italian ceramic chargers on the farm tables. We used the beauty of the farm and the surrounding area as our inspiration.
I wanted to give a nod to my Texas roots, so we served upscale barbecue family style, just like meals are served at Young Life camps. The seated dinner included smoked brisket with homemade barbecue sauce, green chili chicken, white cheddar mac n’ cheese, purple potato salad and “baked bean” creamer peas with roasted tomatoes.
Trevor and I aren’t really fans of cake, so instead of a wedding cake we had stacked wedding pie, and instead of groom’s cake we served Trevor’s favorite dessert, my banana pudding recipe.
We had a live band and a DJ. Drywater Band provided the most amazing entertainment that kept all our guests dancing! We wanted our guests to have FUN at our reception, and the band kept the dance floor full the entire night! Trevor and I wanted great dance music with some good ol’ country music mixed in for fun.
Who supplied the stationery?
Papellerie custom designs for each client, so their designers created the fonts, calligraphy, maps, and our custom monogram for our invitation suite, which were then letterpress printed. The pieces were hand tied together with steel blue suede with a wooden letterpress print of our monogram and tucked into an envelope lined with a hand drawn blue wood pattern. Rather than paper menus or escort cards, they designed gorgeous wooden bar and dinner menus, and a huge table assignment board that was embellished with florals and greenery by Gypsy Florals.
We wanted every detail of our wedding day to be intentionally chosen and created, so we had a hand in every detail. Although we didn’t do any DIY touches (the wedding was too big!) we did have lots of conversations with every vendor to discuss our vision for the day, and how we wanted our guests to feel loved and welcomed. We also spent lots of time planning every detail of the ceremony with Trevor’s dad, who officiated the ceremony.
We had so many special moments, but probably the most special was our ceremony and all the details that went into it. Trevor’s father officiated our ceremony, which was so special. We had our family friends play music during the ceremony. We chose to sing “How Great Thou Art,” which has been a tradition in Trevor’s family for three generations.
Advice for other couples
The best advice I can give is to relax and have fun on your wedding day. Celebrate that you get to marry the love of your life and spend the rest of your lives together! Don’t waste your time getting stressed or anxious over details- the most important thing is that you’re getting married! Celebrate that!
A huge storm came blowing through Brenham right after our first dances. We made the call to ensure everyone’s safety, so in a matter of five minutes we moved 250 guests from the tent into our house. Our wedding planners and caterers had moved all the furniture to create a dance floor and bar, the DJ set up his music and we continued the dance party until the storm passed. Afterward everyone moved happily back to the tent and the fun continued until late into the night!
