This afternoon I would like to introduce you to a young film maker taking the wedding world by storm. Al Roberts from Al Roberts Creative. We often talk about the importance of good wedding photography here on the blog. Capturing those moments on your wedding day is one of the most important things you can spend your wedding budget on. Well the same can be said for wedding films. Films often capture those moments that photography can’t. Things you may have missed on your wedding day can be picked up and captured forever with a film. Al comes from a creative background, having started his photography and film career working in street photography, he takes a very ‘fly on the wall’ approach to his wedding work. His outlook is modern, creative and filled with emotion. Just want you want your wedding film to be.
Al has been kind enough to share his latest showreel with us, as well as a few of his favourite wedding films. Read on to find out more.
When did you start your business and what made you start?
I started taking street photos straight after I graduated 3 years ago. As soon as I began to research all time great photographers like Vivian Maier, Joel Meyerowitz and Slim Aarons, I quickly knew photography was where I wanted to be. Soon after, my eye turned to film making and I started making short travel videos in my free time. In 2016 I decided to go freelance to pursue both as a career and haven’t looked back since.
Where are you based?
I live in Clapham South, London but I’m from Weybridge, Surrey which makes filming around that area a lot easier too. I will travel as far as needed, furthest I’ve been so far is Italy!
How would you describe your style?
I try and make my wedding videos as customised and personal as possible. Before the wedding I’ll collate template videos, ask the couple to send me any they like and then try to hone in on what exactly they’re after. Depending on the couple’s request – I often use the best parts of the speeches to narrate the video and tell the story of the couple / wedding – almost making it a short documentary. As a street photographer, being a fly on the wall at events comes quite naturally to me. My main focus is to capture lots of little golden moments of the bride and groom, or of their family and guests which they may not see throughout the day. Each wedding is unique and everyone has a different end film in their heads – I just do my upmost to deliver as close as possible to that and beyond!
What do you enjoy most about your job?
Aside from getting to work with so many different types of people, I’m very grateful to have found a career where my ‘work’ can evoke human emotion. I get the freedom to create a photo or video that not just tells a true story, but is meaningful and a lasting memory of a particular moment in time.
What is your biggest achievement so far?
To date it was showcasing my street work in London last year, but from that I managed get invited to exhibit my latest work in New York in April – which went really well!”
Can you give me some information on your pricing structure?
I have a three tier pricing package – gold, silver and bronze; depending on video length, speeches and ceremony filming. Every couple have different needs and varying budgets, so the three tiers gives people a guideline to pick and choose what they would like for their big day.
