Name and company name
Jen, at Jen Owens Images

Jen Owens Photography

How long have you been taking photos for?
For as long as I can remember – I’ve always been the person out and about with a camera in my hand, right through my childhood and beyond, so it made sense I’d become a photographer one day. My dad has always been very keen on photography and so I guess he really influenced my love for it. When my sister and I started to show a real interest in it when we were younger, he turned our bathroom into a mini darkroom!

How would you describe your style?
A little bit quirky, very much relaxed and all round fun! I’m a big fan of telling the story of a wedding day, which is great for me as I love weddings! I’m usually to be found still snapping away at least 3 or 4 songs into the night…

Where are you based?
In Portobello, Edinburgh (the lovely seaside part). Although my weddings are very much here, there and everywhere. I mainly cover all of Scotland, but have been found in northern England and Belfast as well.

How far will you travel for a wedding?
Honestly? Anywhere! I’m a huge fan of travelling and have seen some amazing places on my travels in the past. Travelling doesn’t faze me at all – I’ll go wherever I’m needed

What is your favorite bit of technical kit?
I’ve just fallen in love with the Canon tilt-shift 45mm lens…

What sort of couple would be your ideal couple to photograph?
A couple who set out to enjoy their day and have an amazing time. If I can capture their joy, then I’m happy!

What celeb would you like to photograph?
I’d really like to photograph Ian McKellen. I think he has the most fascinating face.

Who is your favorite photographer and why?
There’s so many! Jose Villa’s work is so beautiful, the way he works with film. He’s inspired me to pick up a film camera again (my dad’s SLR from the 70s no less!)…although I’m happy to stick with digital for weddings at the moment! Here in the UK as well, so many amazing photographers. Marianne Taylor, Ed Peers, Shell de Mar, Emma Case, Chloe at Caught the Light, Sarah Gawler to name but a few… really love their work.

Who took your wedding photos when you got married?
We had Eamonn McGoldrick shoot our wedding back in 2007 and he really captured the day perfectly for us.

What in your opinion makes the perfect photo?
Capturing the moment. Whether that’s through a portrait of a couple and the love you can see between them, or a candid moment caught at the right time.

What is your biggest achievement so far within your photography?
I think it’s probably managing to set up the business whilst having a full time job! Although whenever I get lovely feedback from couples about their photos – the sense of achievement there has never faded. There’s no better feeling, you can’t stop me grinning!

What advice would you give couples when choosing their wedding photographer?
Choose someone you get on with. Whether it be through emails, phone calls, Skype, or a face-to-face meeting, your photos will be so much better if you feel relaxed and at ease with who you have chosen to record your day.

Jen Owens Photography

What is your favorite photo that you have taken?
Hard to choose really, but I really like this one of Jo and Patrick, taken at Loch Fyne. The sky that afternoon was just amazing (it poured down soon after!)

Jen Owens Photography

Tell me 5 things you love? And 5 things you hate
LOVE – my husband, the sea, reading, hot baths on cold evenings and autumn
HATE – rude people!, green olives, tequila, tickly coughs and missing the bus…

Tell us something about yourself that we may not know, non work related
I’ve always wanted to do a bungee jump, but haven’t had the chance. Yet!

What is your ideal way to spend a day off?
Relaxing day with Mr O, perhaps a walk on Porty beach followed by a trip to the cinema.

This is bad, but my phone! And my camera, of course.

If you weren’t running the photography business, what would you be doing?
Working as a graphic designer.

What would you do if you won the lottery?
Aside from treating my family and friends, pack up a backpack and go travelling with the husband for a couple of months

Cannot recommend Jen enough – she had been an absolute pleasure to deal with, and we were blown away with our engagement pics. And thanks for the comment on the cookie Audrey – I made them the day before but they were demolished not long after that photo was taken!!!
