Sri Lanka is one of the best destinations for an Asian honeymoon for so many reasons. However, when planning that special first holiday together as man and wife, the following are seven top choices to visit for a dreamy and romantic Sri Lankan honeymoon…

Relaxing Up in Ella

When looking for a few quiet days up in the hills, Ella is a great choice. This small town is located around 200 kilometres east of Colombo and perches up at 1,041 metres above sea level. The town offers some of the best guesthouses in all of Sri Lanka and the views surrounding the town are stunning.

When not kicking back and relaxing with a book, there are pleasant walks through the tea plantations to enjoy for the more energetic couples, along with fascinating visits to waterfalls, stunning viewpoints and historic temples along the way.

Exotic and Classical Galle

If looking for a destination to shop until you drop, Galle is an exotic trade city, offering the best in not only shopping but also unique history, while nestled among a beautiful collection of Dutch-colonial buildings.
One of the must-see sites of Galle is the historic Fort. Built by the Dutch back in 1663, sprawling over 36 hectares and framed on three sides by the ocean, this site is well worth the visit. The Fort has rightfully been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and within this beautiful setting, many fascinating boutique shops, hotels and cafes can be found. Owned and run by local and foreign artists, photographers, writers, poets and designers, the fascination of the Fort are never-ending.

Galle is also home to some of the best hotels in the country, so for a luxury holiday in Sri Lanka it’s a perfect spot to soak up some culture but also relax in splendor.

The “City of Light” Nuwara Eliya

Nuwara Eliya, more commonly known as the “City of Light,” is situated in the hill country of Central Province, Sri Lanka. Known to the local tourist industry as “Little England,” this quaint town does, indeed, have the feel of an English country village, while nestled amongst the green and lush tea plantations.

While the small village feeling prevails for most of the year, the town is also popular with local holidaymakers and in spring offers sporting events, horse racing and a strong party vibe. Staying at one of the town’s colonial hotels and then heading out for a round of golf on the local course makes for a curious combination of both historic Sri Lanka and modern day life.

History in Sigiriya

Sigiriya, an adaptation of the Sri Lankan for “Lion Rock,” is one of the most fascinating historic monuments of Sri Lanka. This ancient palace and fortress complex attracts thousands of visitors every year.

Located on an island between the towns of Habarane and Dambulla, Sigiriya sits on a huge rocky plateau, 370 metres above sea level. The Sigiriya rock plateau was formed from the magma of an extinct ancient volcano and stands 200 metres above the surrounding jungles, offering astonishing views. Within the fortress complex can be found the ruins of an ancient palace, along with fortifications, gardens and fountains, ponds and canals. For those with an interest in history or who just love scenic views, Sigiriya is a fascinating visit indeed.

Sun and Sand in Tangalle

For those with sun, sea and sand in mind, Tangalle is the gateway to some of the best beaches of southeast Sri Lanka and a favourite of Sri Lanka travel experts. Enjoy the charms of the Marakolliya, Medaketiya or Rekawa beaches while soaking up the sun or indulging in water sports.  Of special interest is the Rekawa turtle watch, where from April to September the leatherback turtles head ashore to lay their eggs in the sand.

Take a Trip to Trincomalee

Also known for short as Trinco, this major resort port city sits on one of the finest natural harbours in the world. While better known for its experiences during the war, the site of the city is ancient and is filled with fascinating historic sites, along with plenty of charm for the visitor.  Close by, the beaches of Nilaveli, Salli and Uppuveli are a popular attraction, offering scuba diving, surfing, fishing and whale watching trips. The Kanniya Hot Springs are also an interesting excursion for love-infused couples.

Go Touring in Yala National Park

For those in a safari frame of mind, Yala National Park is the second largest and most popular national park in Sri Lanka. Yala was designated as a wildlife sanctuary back in 1900 and two of the five blocks of the park are open to visitors.

The park has one of the highest leopard densities in the world and is also home to up to 350 of the endangered Sri Lankan elephants. Among the 44 species of mammals in Yala it is also possible to see the Sri Lankan sloth bear, wild water buffalo, as well as 215 varied bird species.
