I just love everything about it, the two beautiful brides first fo all, what a gorgeous couple they make, and so many smiles between them, it looked like they had a really fun day. THAT dress…OMG I die! Laura looks incredible in this dress! I Love the styling, the beach theme works so well, all the DIY details are fantastic and shows how you can really make a wedding your own, by putting your own personal stamp on it……the colours are beautiful, as are the portrait shot on the Pier………and what can I say about those cup cakes? so cute! All in all a wedding I certainly would love to have been a guest at!

Laura and Ding describe their day as ‘Fun, relaxed, filled with so much love from all of our guests, perfectly personalised, beachy and just totally us!’

How they met
We met on the small Greek Island of Poros at a mutual friend’s wedding over 7 years ago.

Venue
The Dome Cinema on Worthing Seafront. The Dome is the oldest working cinema in England; it was renovated a few years back and has an intimate Dome area for the ceremony, a large function room with a terrace overlooking the beach – just perfect for us!  The great thing is that when we  go to the cinema it will remind us of our special day!
We considered various hotels and venues in Sussex but we love our home town so didn’t want to venture too far.  The Dome was the perfect size, style and overlooks the beach which is our favourite place to be!  We relocated to Worthing together 5 years ago and wanted all of our wedding guests to come and see where we live and enjoy some time at a true British seaside town. Lots of our guests stayed overnight and made a weekend of it – the Worthing Birdman competition was taking place the following day – we did consider entering in our Wedding attire!!

Outfits
My dress is called Garbo by designer Jenny Packham – it is absolutely the dress of my dreams!  I didn’t want a traditional wedding gown but I wanted something elegant with a vintage edge – I never thought I find what I was looking for when I explained my style to my friend Nina who was also getting married in 2011, she told me about Jenny Packham’s gowns and I must say that every last one in her collection was stunning.  I found a stockist in Sussex but most gowns were over budget at around £2,500…by a stroke of luck I found a stockist in
Southampton called Shay Harris and Garbo was there waiting for me – It was obviously meant to be!

Theme
We wanted to try and create a ‘chic beach’ theme using natural textures and with a powder blue accent colour.

Personal touches
Yes, lots – we did the whole thing ourselves!
- From designing and making the table decorations,
- The ceremony room styling,
- The cupcake display crates,
- Our mum’s helped by planting up the ceramic buckets with pale blue flowers and grasses to bring a bit of the outside in!
- We ordered personalised sticks of rock,
- Beach themed cupcakes,
- Personalised water bottles,
- Confetti of white feathers and blue petals,
- Photo’s of us over the years in frames,
- Old postcards of Worthing on the tables, some of which over 100 years old original, used postcards featuring the dome and Worthing seafront in sepia,
- Lobster pots with wooden fish and starfish.
Doing it all ourselves meant that we got exactly what we wanted; everyone commented on the personal touches we made which made it different to any other wedding they’d been to

Special moments
Meeting each other for the first time on the stairs of the hotel before going together to the ceremony room, travelling in Dougal the amazing campervan, hearing our personalised vows
to each other, ceremony guests singing “all you need is love”, anthem band in the evening who made the night so much fun, the air guitar was out, Ding spending the morning of the big day with sis and bridesmaids, walking into ceremony room and seeing all of our close friends and family smiling and happy and genuinely celebrating our special day with us, fun beach shots with our close family, going off with our photographer Jason onto the pier for our couple shots – every part of our day was magical and just having all of our amazing friends and family in one room together was fantastic.

Planning Advice
Make sure you are equally involved as it’s too much for one person, try and have fun along the way as it’s easy to get caught up in the stressful parts – and remember, it is just one day so don’t sweat the small stuff because on the day you’ll be in your own little bubble of happiness and it really won’t matter!

Biggest surprise of the day?
Ding – Laura bought me a stunning diamante Thomas Sabo watch
Laura – Ding bought me the hair piece that I couldn’t afford.  My sister said she’d make me one and I trusted her so much so that I didn’t even see it until the day … and low and behold it was the one from the shop that I loved but it was just over budget!  She did stitch a cute little blue diamante onto it though so it had a little personal touch!
There were also several serendipitous moments – 3 instances of friends or relatives who knew eachother very well but had no idea that they shared us as mutual friends or relatives!

Supplier Shout Outs

• Butterfly Cake Company, Angmering, West Sussex – Clare was absolutely fantastic!  Her customer service was superb and she makes the most incredible cupcakes you’ll ever taste as well as stunning designs.  She worked with us to create the most perfect and delicious cakes and we felt as if we were her only customer throughout!  We are using her services again for a family Thanks Giving party in November and she will be designing some more thanksgiving theme cakes.  All of our guests raved about the cakes and every single cake went!  Luckily we had the forethought to ask for a box of 6 just for us which we enjoyed next day!
• Anthem Band – this band have to be the best ever wedding party band we’ve ever seen.  They were fun, entertaining, interacted with the crowd whilst singing and playing – they really have to be seen to be believed – they made the night what turned out to be one of the best parties ever!  All of our guests absolutely loved them!
• The Rock Company  – we bought personalised rock favours which were perfect for our beach theme, had our names and a heart inside with a personalised label and colour
• Jason Alexander Leaman – Jason was our fab photographer.  Such a lovely guy, professional and friendly making us feel completely at ease.  We both love photography and agreed that the photo’s were one of the most important aspects of the day.  Jason has captured fantastic, artistic shots of our day and we are so happy with the album!
• The Dome – We cannot say enough about the staff team at the Dome.  The catering was outstanding and all of the guests we spoke to said how great the BBQ buffet was.  The team were friendly, professional and all of our needs, large and small were catered for, nothing was too much effort.  Would definitely recommend them – they looked after us on the day that we were setting up the venue checking on us and giving us free lunch and drinks all day!
• Vanilla Splits – We hired a beautiful VW Campervan called Dougal as our wedding transport from this company – fab company to deal with so friendly and really professional – we are completely in love with Dougal and hope to take him camping again in the future.
• The Burlington Hotel – Great price and lovely sea view rooms – wonderful customer service and did a great rate for our guests staying there.  It’s relaxed, informal with great bar food and beautiful views of Worthing seafront
• Percy Holley – Percy designed and made our rings – Ding had a platinum band and Laura a platinum band with princess cut diamonds.  Such beautiful rings and Percy was wonderful to work with.
• Shay Harris Bridal Lounge – incredible designer dresses and Shay and Daisy are such lovely ladies!  It is a boutique style lounge – Shay is able to customise and gives fabulous advice…she also has matching accessories so you can really see your full outfit come to life.

As soon as I saw the photos that have been sent into me by  Sue Kwiatkowska I knew I had to share it with you. It’s a relaxed day full of lots of homemade details, from 2 gorgeous ladies. I love the words they have written for me  as well, ‘Have the day EXACTLY how you both want it’ so true!! It goes to show that you don’t have to spend a fortune on your wedding day to make it the day you want as these clever ladies did it all for £5000. It just takes a bit of time and care to do a few things yourselves and call in some favours from friends and family. I’m sure you will agree with me that the photographs are full of love, laughter, sunshine and happiness…..what more could any bride as for??

How did you meet?
We met at hockey about 4 years ago. I fancied Sarah immediately but she was as straight as they come! After lots of nights and doing my best to charm and make her laugh she finally fell for me. We’ve been together nearly 3 and a half years and its perfect.

How would you sum up your day?
Relaxed, full of love and laughter, perfect

What made you decide to get married where you did?
We wanted a countryside wedding and we heard the farm had just started doing weddings so we went along to see what it was like. The drive up the country road was a beautiful one – one you can immediately envisage your friends and family loving. When we arrived we were won over within minutes by Howard, who welcomed us with a warm hug and congratulations. Then we just fell in love with what we saw – the beautiful old barn, the lovely courtyard with stable doors on the edge (with fantastically posh loo’s), the unbeatable surrounding scenery of Sussex, lots of space for a marquee and all the facilities we needed. Unlike most venues where they only offer the venue and not much else, or the add a huge cost for extras like tables, chairs, plates, cutlery or corkage – this was all included in a extremely competitive price and no problem at all. They even let us borrow a couple of hay bales to add to our theme and help with extra seating in the sun. It was ideal and exactly how we pictured.

Did you have a theme or colour scheme?
Country summer theme – white flowers for tables, wild flowers everywhere else. Gently-coloured bunting.

Did you have any personal touches? Or things that you did yourself?
Our invites were fun caracateurs of ourselves designed by our friend on a postcard. We decorated the barn with family the day before. We had friends putting together wild flowers for the large vases. Mum bought loads of foliage she’d picked from the garden to use also. The table vases were jam or pasta jars – We got a few friends to save them and one evening with a bottle of wine we decorated them all. Instead of a guestbook we used white postcards for table names with a ribbon attaching a pencil and asked people to write a message on the back then peg it up on the washing line at the back of the marquee. It looked wicked once they were all hung up. We used Spotify to play music – the venue had wireless. We had put together lots of playlists and it also meant we could take requests of absolutely anything! Instead of a gift list we used a website listing out all the things we want to do on our honeymoon with costs next to it. Guests then can specifically buy you an adventure or meal and be part of your trip –ie. a visit up Eiffel tower £14.It’s a much nicer more personal way of asking for a contribution rather than another toaster you don’t need.

What were your special moments and highlights?
Arriving with our dads separately and the ceremony were the highlight. We had written a message to be read out by the celebrant about what we love about each other – neither of us had heard the others – it was so touching. The guests all commented. The swing band that we’d found busking in Brighton was also amazing! The photographs in the beautiful sunset. The food – which was a lovely ploughman’s with cornetto’s for desert – relaxed and perfect for a summers day. Our first dance – we didn’t want a cheesy one-on-one thing so we secretly asked 10 of our friends to learn some moves to Jai Ho by the Pussycat dolls. Guests loved it when they additional dancers jumped in a few seconds after we started. It went down really well and got the party started. Our cake was amazing made by our friend Nerissa.

Is there anything you would do differently?
Sophie wishes she hadn’t had strapless dress as her bestfriend hadn’t tied her in tightly enough in comparison to the wedding shop. Thankfully Aunty Jean came to the rescue with a safety pin and a strap we found inside the dress itself!! Apart from that it ran perfectly.

What advice would you give any other couples?
Have the day EXACTLY how you both want it – its amazing how suddenly everyone has an opinion. Don’t be afraid to remind them that this is your special day. Treat it just as you would a brilliant party – have all the things that you love – people, music, food, special touches. Enjoy every minute including the organising. We couldn’t believe how many brides said to us on the lead up “I bet you are really stressed aren’t you?” or “bet you want it to be over” – Not at all, we loved it. How exciting to be organising a really fun, loving day with the one you love and all your favourite people. Make sure you eat something – we talked so much we barely ate. You barely see each other throughout the day so make sure you both take 5 minutes out every couple of hours to stand back and take it all in. Luckily for us we went off for two sets of photos as there were so many fabulous locations to have them so were able to hang out together and say ‘wow isnt this great’ You don’t have to spend 1000’s and 1000’s of pounds. We did ours for under £5000 all in! There is no need for you to be repaying it for years after. We were clear with our budget with suppliers from the start. Our wedding dresses were in fact bridesmaids dresses costing around £200 each – we just added the middle accessories to glam it up a bit. Friends did our hair and make up. We didn’t have bridesmaids or favours, or an elaborate meal. We had a pay bar for the evening, an ipod style playlist instead of DJ. We bought the wine on a great deal from Tesco’s. We’d already paid for the whole day by the time the day came round.

What was your biggest surprise of the day?
Well we loved absolutely all of it. It was well organised so there we no surprises although Susan the photographer saved our lives. Our original photographer had double booked and told us with only a few days to go before the wedding!! Luckily we heard about Susan and this was her only Saturday available between then and October!!! PHEW! And oh my were we pleased, her pictures were astonishing.
We were taken back by just how much the guests enjoyed the whole day – they loved the small touches like the washing line of postcards, the cornetto’s, particularly loved the ceremony as it was so personal, and the band. The food was great for a summer’s day and the venue looked even better than we thought. The company that provided the drinks was brilliant, we didn’t expect it to look like a proper wooden bar, with proper draft beer taps and the staff were so friendly. Just what you need.

The wedding is of Jen and Leah and takes place in Toronto. A lot of the wedding was hand made, from the decorations, the flowers, the photos on the wall, Leah even made her own headpiece! Lee Anne loved taking the photos and was assisted by her daughter, she told me she was made to feel like one of the family and loved every minute of it.

All day we had people come up and ask us if they could get married in the tent, unfortunately I had to tell them no but when I told them all there was a wedding tacking place that we had already organised every one’s eyes lit up!!

Bella and Lorna were the two incredibly gorgeous brides who took part in the ceremony. Bella is actually a good friend of mine, she came out to Ibiza last years as a guest at my wedding, so I was incredibly honoured to be able to help her plan her wedding to her long term girlfriend Lorna.
I had the idea a few months ago when I started to plan Pride and I asked Bella and Lorna if they fancied having a wedding ceremony on the day, I knew how loved up they both were so thought it would be a lovely idea to get them involved. They were delighted to be asked and then the ball was in motion to get the wedding ready for 26th June.

I contacted One life Ceremonies who agreed to write Bella and Lorna their own wedding ceremony and carry it out on the day.
I then contacted Mirage Couture who very generously offered to donate the brides their gowns for the day.
In the Pink Photgraphy offered to take the photos on the day, and Catherine Elizabeth offered to do the hair and makeup…………so the wedding was set!!

I couldn’t quite believe how many people turned up to the tent to watch the ceremony, I don’t think Bella and Lorna could either!! I cried like a baby throughout the ceremony, which was beautifully written.

The aim of the day was to provide information about Civil Partnerships in the form of a wedding fair, but I wanted to make it more than a wedding fair, I wanted it to be fun, entertaining…..an event within pride, that made people want to visit and come back to throughout the day.

I was a bit worried that people at pride wouldn’t take the tent seriously as maybe they were just coming for a day out, but it turned out that a lot of people had come specifically for tent and the information that was available to them!

The tent itself was full of some amazing people and some great decoration, a big thank you to Bunting Queen for the amazing bunting that she specially made for the tent, it looked totally fabulous and really made the tent special. But the highlight of the day had to be the wedding of Bella and Lorna, it drew in quite a crowd in fact the tent was full with people queing out side to get a look at the gorgeous brides. The ceremony was conducted my Maria from One Life Ceremonies
The wedding was very personal to me as Bella is a good friend, she came to my wedding in Ibiza last year so it was a realy honour to have helped her and her girlfriend plan their day………Full post of this on the blog tomorrow.

All in all it was a great day, the whole of Sheffield pride got a huge turn out, 8,000 was estimated on the day. It was a real pleasure to be involved, I met some great people and even though I had my moments of stress i was so pleased that i did it!!

The day was amazing, hot, busy but fantastic, my legs are still acaking from all the running around, but it really was a fabulous day!

Everyone of the exhibitors was fantastic, the live entertainment was fabulous, the fashion show and the wedding of Bella and Lorna was perfect.

The Couple Mel and Laura had their ceremony in the fairytale venue that is the Lost Village of Dode. An enchanted place where time has pretty much stood still since shortly after the Norman Conquest. The building itself is 900 year old, but was deconsecrated 700 years ago, so steeped in tradition and a simply stunning venue for a Civil Partnership or Wedding.

The wedding is of Mark and Lee who held their ceremony and reception at Bolsover Castle, Simon says ‘Mark and Lee had the weather with them for their wedding at Bolsover Castle. This year’s event will be held on Saturday 26th June in EndcliffePark, Sheffield from 1pm to 7pm with free entry.
For that reason I thought that I would run a week long special on Civil Partnerships, sharing with you some great Real Weddings, and also some great supplier details.

So more about Saturdays Event. My main aim for the event was NOT to have it as any normal Wedding Fair. my aim has been to make it as interactive, fun and informative as possible, not your normal run of the mill Wedding fair, more of an event in it’s own right.

It’s fair to say that planning this event has taken a huge amount of time and effort so I really, really hope it’s a big success. We have some excellent suppliers exhibiting as well as some great entertainment!  AND an actual wedding tacking place……..which I’m super excited about!!!

Sheffield Pride is one of Yorkshire’s biggest annual live music events aimed at the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender communities. Last year’s event was a huge success which was enjoyed by over 5500 members of Sheffield’s LGBT community.  The Irwin Mitchell Rainbow Wedding Tent –  is bigger and better than ever. The tent will reflect the LGBT communities and our aim is to make it as informative and fun as possible

 
So What can you Expect from the day?

• We have a number of wedding suppliers exhibiting, offering demonstrations of their products and services.
• Goodie bags to give out filled with Civil Partnership information and magazines.
• Live entertainment in the form of Swing Singer Chris Heathcote, Dancing from Salwa Belly Dancers, DJing from Sheffield’s finest Rich Williams. Plus a Sheffield exclusive, Big Ang presents Darren Brookes singing brand new track ‘Till the sunrise’
• A Photo Booth area for you to dress up and have your picture taken.
•  Make-up and hair demonstrations from Professional make-up artist Catherine Elizabeth
• A bridal fashion show showcasing all the latest wedding outfits from Mirage Couture and flowers from Orchis
• AND a couple getting married (well blessed…we can’t get over the legal technicalities I’m afraid!) with a ceremony area set up for you to watch the happy couple get hitched!
