As a wedding Planner and a Blogger, brides and grooms are always asking me about trends and fashions in the wedding world. It’s part of my job to keep up to date with what is new and hot in this crazy wedding land, which is why I love receiving emails like the one that is the result of this post. My Good friends at Ava Event Styling decided to work together with a collection of other amazing wedding suppliers and pick out 2 hot trends for 2013/2014. I was so delighted when the email containing all these beautiful images, courtesy of Nicola from Daffodil Waves landed in my inbox, so if your currently thinking about trends and styling for your own wedding, this post is just for you.

All Things Bright and Beautiful - A Styled Shoot

All Things Bright and Beautiful - A Styled Shoot

They entitled  the shoot ‘All Things Bright and Beautiful’ and it is full of colour, elegance and fun! I am a BIG lover of colour at the moment, so these ideas are right up my street. They mix in classic styling with a more modern contemporary look, so there really is something there for everyone. The team did a wonderful job and the attention to details is superb. They even put together a behind the scenes video, so you can see how the two looks were created.

4 All Things Bright and Beautiful - A Styled Shoot

Amanda from Ava Event Styling tells us the thought behind the shoot………..

We decided on ‘colour’ being the theme of our shoot as it is strong trend for 2013 and we are sure it will extend into 2014 weddings and beyond.
We chose to use colour in two very different ways, firstly incorporating the continuing trend for, all things ‘ombre’ but show-casing it in a very elegant, decadent way. And secondly, using a spectrum of bold, rainbow colours in a very fun and uncluttered way.
We used Pintrest to gather all of our inspiration; which proved to be a fantastic way of communicating of our vision, as despite the fact that most of us are based in and around Birmingham, we worked with other suppliers based as far away as Cambridge and the Lake District.

Purple Ombre

The key look for the ‘ombre’ table was a very layered, glamorous, vintage style, as we’ve seen a definite shift from the ‘village fete’ and vintage crockery trend towards a more sophisticated version of ‘vintage’.
All of the products in the tablescape were silver and we used we a mixture of genuine vintage containers and reproduction mercury glass. The floristry consisted of lots of big blousey garden roses, lisianthus, September flower and eucalyptus. The colour palette ranged from a dark ‘bluey’ purple through to cream.
The scheme was finished off with elegant, ombre calligraphy and table stationery. Macarons were wrapped in printed tissue paper, personalised with ‘Love is Sweet’ message.

Retro Rainbow

Our second theme had an entirely different look as we only used tulips, in colours of the rainbow. Each colour block was displayed in an original 1940s / 50s mantle vase which gave a really impactful look. We loved the contrast of contemporary blocks of colour, mixed with the curves of the retro hardware.
We shot the rainbow tablescape on pure white linen first and then layered up the look with coloured linen napkins and a runner. As a final look we introduced white glass pieces and ceramic bird vases.
The sherbet table gift acted as a place name marker and co-ordinated with fun, rainbow stationery. We also incorporated button badge favours and personalised tins that could be used as place names for an escort table; by attaching balloons to the tins you can use them to create your table centrepiece.
Whilst we hadn’t planned on styling a shoot in the snow in late March, the vivid colours really popped out against the white background!

Today’s wedding is a good one and it shows any of you out their working to a tight budget that you can have the wedding you want and do it in style. Heather and Jerald were married on 12th August in Oregon. The whole budget for their wedding was $3K and they managed to stick to it by doing a lot of DIYing and getting  a lot of help from friends and family. With a gorgeous yellow and blue theme, this weddings is bright, cheerful and full of character. Thanks so much to Sara Adams who is based in Oregon for the wonderful images.

Sara tells us more about the day…………

Heather and Jerald are both Volkswagen enthusiasts and met at Jerald’s work – a VW part store. It took Heather 8 years of finding excuses to come in and strike up conversation for them to have their first date. Their wedding day was nothing short of spectacular. With a total budget of $3k, Heather and Jerald called upon the talents of their friends to help out with the details of the day. Things like the cake and cupakes, the band, photography, officiating, and the cake toppers – even Heather’s bolero was crocheted by a friend! Heather also DIY’d a majority of the decorations and got the rest through Something Borrowed Portland – a local, affordable option for renting decor. The bouquets and boutonnieres were made from sunflowers grown in the couple’s backyard and arranged by the groom. For the reception they hosted a potluck where they provided the main dishes (all BBQ’d by the best man) and guests were asked to bring their favorite side dish. It was a wedding filled with community and the most perfect day for this couple!

Group Shots

As you know if you’re a regular the Blog, I believe your wedding photographs are the single most important thing in your day, they are what will hold you memories and the one thing you will have left once the day is done. Choosing the right photographer that fits your style and personality is an integral part of your wedding planning.
Photography styles have changed a huge amount over the past few years, and what we expect from a photographer has changed as well. People these days are a lot more interested in creative photography, something that really captures the true essence of the couple. As a planner and a blogger I see couples move away from the more traditional style of photography and have opted for a much more relaxed, candid way of capturing their day.
So today I wanted to talk to you about the Group Shot! No matter how creative your wedding is, every bride and groom still wants a group shot, its only natural, how many opportunities do you actually get to have a photo of EVERYONE you love around you, not many!
So I have asked a number of wedding photographers to offer some advice on the matter of group shots, how to do them, the problems that can arise and some handy hints to make your wedding day flow better!

Group Shots(www.julesfortunephotography.com)

group shots(weddings.gdxphoto.com)

Don’t have to many

Try to limit your totally number of shots to 6 or fewer . Do you remember when you have been a guest at a wedding, which wedding was the best, the one where you spent an hour being called out for photographs, or the one where you don’t even remember the photos happening. For this reason try to keep your list of group shots to a minimum. Sit down with your fiancé before the wedding and work out who you want in each shot, be realistic, and ask yourself why you want these photos, will they go in the album, the frame, the wall? And if not don’t have it!

Tux and tales(www.tuxandtalesphoto.co.uk )

ruth anne photography(www.ruthannephotography.com)

Leave enough time

Most photographers will be able to do the group shots in 25 – 30 minutes providing they haven’t been given a stupidly long list. Stick to the advice above, 6 or fewer is the key.- any more shots than this are likely to leave you board/wishing you were at the bar.
The average time to get people to the location and set up group shots is roughly 2-8 people = 5 minutes, 9-15 people = 7 minutes, so as you can see it soon adds up having 10-15 group shots

Toast of Leeds(www.toastofleeds.co.uk)

polly alexandra(www. alexandreweddings.com)

Have a member of the wedding party to help you

Your Photographer isn’t going to know everyone they need to photography, so delegate the job of rounding up the guests to a member of the wedding party, normally an usher or bridesmaid (or both) and make sure they are on hand to work with the Photographer. Your group shots will be much more efficient and painless if you have your groups are ready and waiting to be photographed. Make sure everyone who is in a group shot knows in advance when and where they will be needed. You don’t want nan nipping off to the loo at the crucial moment!

Tux and Tales (www.tuxandtalesphoto.co.uk )

www.lissaalexandraphotography.com(www.lissaalexandraphotography.com)

Not all guests will want to have their photo taken

Not everyone wants their photo taken, at least one guest who will do nothing but try to make the whole thing worse and last longer, so if they don’t want to be in the photo, just go with it and let the photographer know it’s OK for that particular gust to opt out, other wise they will only ruin the photo.

Toast of Leeds(www.toastofleeds.co.uk)

chris milner(www.chris-milner.com)

Stick to the Plan (but have a back up)

Your Photographer will ask you for the list for group shots before the wedding day, give it to them and stick to that list. Don’t surprise them on the day by adding another 6 group shots to the list, and make sure that no one else does either. I have known many occasions when a family relative has hijacked the photographer by getting them to take numerous unscheduled grow shots, which means that the bride and groom miss out on their own personal time with the photographer for their portrait shots.
Also have a backup plan for the location of the shots, you might want them on the steps of the town hall but you may find it rains or the sun is too harsh on the day.

Toast of Leeds(www.toastofleeds.co.uk)

Tux and tales (www.tuxandtalesphoto.co.uk )

Get Creative

Think how these photos are going to look on your mantelpiece! Providing you have only got a short list of shots to take, make the most of this time and get creative. Let your photographer choose a great backdrop and have fun, your photographer should match the tone of the wedding and the personality of the bride and groom. Think levels, each group doesn’t have to be just in a line. Have some people sitting, kneeling, standing, mix it up, use chairs, walls, props. Have fun with the photos and try to inject some personality into them

polly alexandra(www. alexandreweddings.com)

Paul Joseph Photographywww.pauljosephphotography.co.uk)

siegrid cain photography(www.siegridcainphotography.com)

studio sequoia(www.studiosequoia.com)

Keep everyone relaxed

It’s often possible to capture some lovely images while people are actually moving into position or waiting for the photography to start and these can make nicer shots than the ones where people are looking at the camera. Also give someone the job of keeping everyone glass filled up, everyone responds better when they have had a drink!

louis evorster photography(www.louisevorsterphotography.co.za)

Do we really need the full group shot?

OK I’m going to be controversial now and say that the day of the BIG group shot has been and gone! Yes it’s traditional to have a shot of EVERYONE who has attend the wedding, but really are you going to put this photo on your mantelpiece or wall? No you’re not, and you know why, because once that photo has been printed everyone is just going to look like a dot, you’re not going to be able to distinguish one face from another. Other reasons have all been mentioned above. Not every gust is going to want to take part, you’ll always have the odd guest who is pulling a face. The time it takes to put the BIG group shot together, will eat in to your drinks reception time, getting everyone together can take up to 15 minutes, and if you looking at getting creative with a heart-shaped (please God no) circle, or any other shape, then you’re looking at 30 minutes. Think of your poor photographer, I have seen photographers hanging out of windows, climbing on roofs, climbing up trees to get the group shots, do you really want your photographer doing this? Also Remember your photographer will be taking photos all day, let them take the time they would have used to get the group shot to take some much more creative candid shots of each guest instead, surely you’d prefer a picture of your guests laughing with a drinking their hand, rather than lined up as if they were in front of a firing squad?!?

neil thomas douglas(www.neilthomasdouglas.com)

jay mountford photography(www.jaymountfordphotography.co.uk)

So what are your thoughts? Has this advice helped you at all? How many groups shots are you panning? Or how many did you have?

Thanks to the many Photographers who all contributed to this post, couldn’t have written it without them: Toast of Leeds,  Jay Mountford Photography,  Paul Jospeh Photography,  Babb Photo , Polly Alexandra, Tux and Tales

We are in my home town of Sheffield today for this fabulous wedding which really shows off the city to it’s best. Split between three venues this wedding is full of fun, food,  life, dancing and some gorgeous details. The main venue where the meal takes place is the wonderful chimney house, one of my favourite venues in Sheffield. It has an urban feel, with its exposed bricks and unique decor, and is perfect for any intimate wedding or event. Big thanks to Tierney Photography for capturing the day so perfectly.

‘It was a magical day that reflected the two of us and all the things we love about Sheffield and our lives; eating, drinking, music and friendship and family. It was vintage, cool, and full of fun and laughter throughout the whole day, it was exactly how we had imagined it would be when we looked around at everyone enjoying themselves and the wedding.’

Vintage, Cool, and Full of Fun Sheffield Wedding

Vintage, Cool, and Full of Fun Sheffield Wedding

Tracey and Glenn Tracey were married on 21st March 2013. The Ceremony was held at The Leopold Hotel Sheffield with a Candlelit meal at the Chimney House Kelham Island Sheffield and the evening party Platillo’s a retro wine bar in Leopold Square Sheffield. ‘We love Sheffield and wanted our wedding to reflect these two quirky parts of the city. Kelham Island is steeped in Sheffield history and the Chimney House is so cool and unique, it’s a grade II listed building, so we felt it was perfect for our wedding meal. We spend a lot of time in Leopold Square listening to live music, as Glenn is a musician and many of our friends are so The Leopold Hotel and Platillos seemed the perfect places to have the ceremony and evening party. We had an intimate ceremony and meal with just 48 of our closest friends and family then 200 came at night to party with us. It didn’t take long to plan, about 6 months. We knew what we didn’t want so it made it relatively easy to plan what we did want and all the venues were so easy to work with that everything just clicked into place.’

How they met
We met about 10 years ago through mutual friends and became best friends for a few years. This then developed into us realising we had found “the one” and have been together as a couple about 8 years now.

Tell me about the proposal
It was quite early into our relationship, as we had been friends for a while we just knew I think We were best man and maid of honour at a friend’s wedding and Glenn proposed at the bar at the evening reception
It just took us about 8 years to get around to planning it!! I’m glad we did really as it all just seemed to be right on the day. I have 2 sons in their twenties and it was wonderful having them as part of the day all grown up and enjoying the vibe.

Why did you choose your photographer?
We wanted someone who would reflect the day and get the feel of our wedding. We looked at a few websites and Mark Tierney’s photographs just caught our eye, they captured candid shots of the couples and their guests and it looked like no one even knew they were being photographed. We went to meet him and described our wedding and think we all just knew he would be fab and he was. Everyone said it didn’t feel like he was there and he really captured the essence of our wedding.

After trawling around lots of bridal shops and the internet I finally found a stunning boutique called The White Room in Sheffield, again like the venues and Mark Chloe just understood the vintage vibe of the wedding and helped me find a dress that reflected this and my personality.
It was Gaillilee by Cymbeline with a fur shrug by Sasso and my shoes were bought on-line.
I had wanted a lace forties look and Chloe helped me achieve that. I felt so special on the day, yet it was floaty and easy to wear so I could eat, drink and dance in it which I did…until the very early hours.

The suit and bridesmaid
The Suit was from Ashley Rodgers Tailors in Sheffield.
My 3 bridesmaid my sister and 2 best friend all different so we agreed that we chose the gold colour palette and they then chose a dress that reflected them. They all looked amazing.
The dresses were from Phase Eight, Monsoon and 1 was bespoke from The Bridal House Sheffield.

Theme or colour scheme
The theme was vintage, lace, boho fun with a white/ivory lace and gold colour scheme. This kind of influenced everything.

Flowers
We wanted the flowers to look wild and in keeping with our vintage theme so my bouquet, the Chimney House flowers and button holes and bridesmaids bracelets’ were a mixture of Gypsophilia, gerberas and some wild flowers Sally at the chimney House sourced.

Decoration
Just candles, candles, fairy lights and a vintage wooden sign saying “evening wedding party, drink, dance and have fun”
The venues were so unique that they spoke for themselves so just candlelight’s and fairy lights were all that was needed.

Food
We are both foodies as are our family and friends and The Chimney House know how to get people around a table, sharing gorgeous locally sourced food so we were in heaven.
The menu we chose involved feasting over 3 hours…the perfect dinner party.
To start; Beetroot carpaccio with Yorkshire goats cheese, marinated mushrooms, Local Rivelin valley beef and salamis with vine tomatoes and parmesan, chicken liver parfait and home-made sticky chutneys and homemade breads and butter.
Mains; Local Free range chicken stuffed with garlic Rosemary and olive oil, filets of Lincolnshire trout with fennel and cucumber relish, roasted peppers and artichokes on basmati rice and crispy onions, spelt grain salad, dauphinoise potatoes and purple broccoli and carrots.
To finish; Cinnamon infused apple and rosehip jelly trifle and local cheeses with fresh bread and homemade biscuits.
No wonder people didn’t want to leave.
At Platillos very late in the evening we had chip butties and bacon sandwiches, that guests loved after dancing the night away.

Entertainment
Glenn arranged all the entertainment, he is in a band and many of our close friends are musicians so live music and to be part of the “wedding after show party”.
Harry Crawley a Sheffield rat pack crooner opened the party. Montuno a Sheffield funk band got everyone on their feet. The G men a Sheffield soul band rounded off the night with everyone singing and dancing. DJ Shaun Lee our friend played our play list until 2am

Personal / DIY touches
It was so important to us that our wedding was fun and a little bit different as Glenn plays at hundreds of weddings so we wanted ours to reflect us and Sheffield and it did
• Our friend Justine made the gold invitations that looked just like a gig ticket as we wanted our wedding to be a party and have lots of fun and live music.
• Becky Lord Designs made the fab luggage label and vintage keys place settings that we designed together and the menus and seating plan.
• My sister-in-law Nicola is a fashion designer but has a talent for baking so she made the fabulous wedding cake that looked like it was made out of lace, and the vintage parcels that contained a retro love heart sweet style cookie.
• Sally and Kirstin at The chimney House decorated the room stunningly. We spend most of our time listening to music and sat around at the dining tables with friends and family, loads of candles and wine and The chimney House captured all this.
• We had a photo slide show of all the guests on a big screen and all ours and theirs favourite songs on the iPod.
• We loved the vintage crockery and funky room, we had to tear our guests away at 7pm to go to the evening live music party.
• We loved the big cream old vintage bus that we hired from Sheffield museum that transported our guests between venues. They all regressed into small children especially the naughty ones on the upper deck.

Special moments
When I walked down the aisle and saw all our dearest friends and family beaming and seeing Glenn turned around to look at me and the look of love on his face.
We both had a moment in The chimney House when we looked around and everyone was eating, laughing drinking and we just looked and each other and said wow this was exactly what we imagined it to be like.

Advice
Just have the wedding you both want, as much as everyone wants their guests to enjoy it, don’t get caught up in what is “expected” the best weddings we have seen on blogs, been to and our own was because they were special to the couple and reflected them and their individuality, and ENJOY it, the whole thing goes so fast.

Biggest surprise
Just how much everyone kept telling us what they loved about the wedding constantly throughout the day, and that they noticed and loved all the personal touches and the bus went down a storm
