Boho Loves: Ginny Marsh Photography – Boho Mixed with Glamour

Choosing the right wedding photographer can sometimes be tough. Choosing someone who suits your style and your wedding can mean lots of internet searching and many recommendations from friends. Today I am hoping to take some of the stress out of your photography search by introducing you to Ginny Marsh Photography. Ginny is based on the Surrey and Hampshire border but is happy to travel to capture beautiful memories at fabulous Boho style weddings. She describes her style as Bohemian mixed with a touch of glamour. Her customer service and her ability to go unnoticed at weddings add to her appeal. Today Ginny is answering a few questions for me and sharing with us her favourite wedding images.

We asked Ginny to tell us more about her business

‘Hi, I’m Ginny, a professional Photographer based in Surrey and I specialise in photographing what I truly love – Weddings, Fashion and Boudoir. I love to work closely with my clients, ensuring they feel comfortable in front of my camera. If you hire me for a boudoir & beauty shoot, I’ll help you create some incredible images that you’ll absolutely love. If I’m photographing your wedding, I’ll fit-in like one of your guests and capture those special moments without you even noticing I’m there. I offer a very unique and individual service but more importantly, I love creating happy clients!’

How long have you been taking photos for
About 8 years now! I started working for an award winning studio in Farnham, where I gained my experience in weddings and portraiture, whilst at the same time doing a degree in Commercial Photography at the Arts University in Bournemouth. I’ve been officially working for myself since 2010 and I’m loving it.

When did you start your photography business and what made you start
I got made redundant from the photography studio I was working for around 4 years ago, which was actually a blessing as it got me to where I am today (with a bit of hard work and determination!).

Where are you based and how far will you travel
In Farnham, on the Surrey and Hampshire border. I’ll travel anywhere within reason! The furthest I’ve gone to photograph a wedding is San Francisco (which was amazing!) and I have photographed quite a few weddings now in Dorset and Devon, where I love.

How would you describe your style
This is such a difficult question! I guess it’s boho mixed with glamour – I love relaxed, rustic, country and beach type weddings, but as a boudoir photographer I do love a bit of glamour and fashion too! I have a photojournalistic approach, so I love to capture what’s going on and people’s reactions, laughter and emotion.

What is your favourite part of your photography equipment
My Canon EOS 5D Mkiii – it’s fabulous to use and I also love filming on it

What makes you different to your competitors
I create fabulous photo video fusion films! So far I haven’t found many photographers who offer this – they are slideshows made up of still images I’ve taken, mixed with little video clips that I’ve shot throughout the wedding day to help tell the story and really take my couples back to that moment when watching them back after the wedding. They are a great option if your budget doesn’t stretch to a videographer, although doesn’t replace a videographer – check out my website for more info and examples!

What do you love most about your job
I just love capturing happy moments and making people happy with the images I create! I never tire of going to weddings, they’re just a joyous occasion and it’s a pleasure to be part of every single one

What is your biggest achievement so far
I was shortlisted as Best Wedding Photographer Regional Finalist for London and the South East in the 2015 Wedding Industry Awards, which I was pretty pleased about! Fingers crossed for this year… I’m also pleased to say I’ve won a couple of Gold awards from the SWPP (Society of Wedding and Portrait Photographers)

What sort of couple do you think you attract
I tend to attract pretty relaxed couples, who love my style and appreciate a good photograph. I form good relationships with all my clients so that they are more relaxed with me on the day and don’t have to worry about what’s happening and when – leave it all to me!

What would be your ideal wedding to work on
I’m always up for anything a bit different and non-traditional! I love country and beach style weddings so I’d love to do more of those. I’m a country girl at heart who loves good music – I’ve been lucky enough to shoot weddings for some very musical couples

Which celeb would you like to photograph
I’ve always admired Christina Aguilera – I just love her vintage style and all the different looks she’s had, so it would be interesting to see what new look I could capture in a portrait/fashion shoot!

Who is your favourite photographer and why
This is a tough question because there are so many… but back to where it all started were fashion photographers of the 1940’s, 50’s and 60’s, such as Richard Avedon – so many of his images have inspired me, from being elegant and glamorous, to telling a story in his portraits.

If you were to get married who would take your pictures
I’m still yet to get married and don’t have an answer to this question yet! When I eventually find Mr Right and get married, I’d probably (obviously) spend a big part of my budget on photography!

What makes the perfect photo
I don’t think it’s what makes the perfect photo, but how the perfect photo is made… I see images before I take them, and look for that moment between a couple, or something that happens to capture a special moment… I think the best photos are taken when something unfolds naturally and I capture it. I also love good light, usually a couple of hours before sunset, or early in the morning, or on a sunny winters day, and absolutely love getting stunning bride and groom photos!  If a bride and groom are very camera shy and don’t want to spend any time away from their guests doing some nice photos of the two of them, (I must admit I get a little disappointed!) but I take it as a challenge to still get some fabulous images of just them without them knowing I’m really there! It might just be going for a walk for 10 minutes, or stopping somewhere to admire the view.

What is your favourite image you have taken
My favourite work is usually my latest work! But I have a few images that stand out as ones I’m really proud of, one of which being a fashion image I shot for Beverley Edmondson Millinery in Farnham, that won the In Vogue photography competiton, presented by the Society for International Fashion and Glamour Photographers. What advice would you give to couples choosing their wedding photographer
After you’ve made a shortlist of photographers you love, firstly, meet up with them in person – it’s very important that you get on well and with your photographer as you’ll be spending most of the day with them! Secondly, ask for them to show you a complete wedding (not just an album) so you know what to expect from all the images, not just the select ones they show you on the website. It also helps if they have proof of good customer service, like being a finalist in the Wedding Industry Awards, or good customer reviews on sites such as Guides for Brides.

Can you give our readers some information on your pricing structure
I have two base packages that include all the digital images, covering half a day or a whole day, depending on my clients preference and budget, and then have lots of add-ons and extras in an a-la-carte style menu, depending on whether they might want an album, a pre-wedding photoshoot, a 2nd photographer, photo video fusion, etc. That way, there’s hopefully something to suit everyone.

Are you promoting new product
I got into doing the photo video fusion films because I started to think about new things I could learn, and the fact that most professional videographers use the same camera as I do… so I started to experiment with video, then did a workshop at the Photography Farm, run by Camera Hannah on video fusion, and hey presto! My Photo-Video Fusion Films were born! I wanted to create something more than just images to transport my clients back to their wedding day when watching it back after the wedding.
They seem to be very popular so far with my clients so fingers crossed it’ll continue to bigger and better things! Check out my Photo Video Fusion page in the weddings section of my website for more info and examples

What is your ideal way to spend a day off
If I had a day off (what’s that?!) I’d love to go down to the Isle of Purbeck in Dorset for a day out by the coast, or just go for a walk or bike ride somewhere, maybe do some yoga, go to see a band play (any live music is good music!), or generally anything that involves tea and cake :-D

What can you never leave the house without
My phone :-s

What would you do if you won the lottery
Oooh if money were no object I’d probably take some time off to see more of the world, then buy a fabulous house in the country that has outbuildings to turn into a boudoir studio space and client meeting area… one day!!!

If you were not running your business what would you be doing
Probably anything that involves travelling!
