Diary of a Boho Bride – Jo & Paddy, Entry 3: Finding the Dress

diary of a boho bride

Woo Hooo it’s Friday afternoon and that means one thing, it’s the weekend! What plans do you all have? This morning I have been watching Fearne in her dancing show. I managed to sit and chat to one of our lovely sponsors while I was there (Emma from East Riddlesden Hall Wedding Venue) and we had a good chat all things weddings. This afternoon Paul and I are heading to Scotland, we are shooting a wedding there tomorrow and are staying for a week with our family. Even though we will be working all week I am really looking forward to visiting Scotland as it is such a beautiful place.

Today we are back on the blog with our regular Boho Bride feature.  Today it is the turn for Jo and Paddy.  How time flies.  They are now into their 6 week count down to the big day!  Last time they were on the blog they shared with us their experience of choosing a photographer.  This week they are back talking about The Dress.

After visiting a few shops for my sister whilst she was hunting and not finding the one out of sooooo many beautiful dresses I thought it really can’t be that hard. She’s just being too picky! My sister knows exactly what she wants and started piecing together a bit from around 10 different dresses. I thought it was just her and I was planning a much simpler task.

Then she took me for my first trip in January of this year. Knowing I didn’t have too long if I was to order, she got me straight too it! When I started trying them on I soon realised that she was right, it wasn’t an easy task. Putting dresses on and trying to imagine them in your size or colour was proving difficult. After 2 shops and around 30 dresses later I was still none the wiser, liking a number of styles all different from her and my bridesmaid!!

Round 2 with a friend also getting married in 2015 started the same, 3 dresses were top favourite from the first shop but all so different. Over lunch I started to worry I wouldn’t be able to find my perfect dress and one would just have to do. Vicky had then booked a second shop as I’d started to send her some Etsy pictures from America which I loved but not wanting to take the risk and order she found a Bridal shop that sold a similar style. We picked up around 5 dresses between us, putting the first one on and walking out to Vicky I was grinning like a Cheshire cat. Vicky also loved it but wanting to see the rest I went in and tried on some more. Each time comparing it to the first, “not as good” “no still prefer the first”. So we were back to it, trying it on again and finding more lovely detail and touches to the dress I knew this was it. Getting clearance from Paddy I later called and ordered.

Top tips for finding that perfect dress:-

Take people you trust – They are likely to have a different opinion that you but it’s probably right!!

Try on all styles – The one you see in the magazines that you think will suit you probably doesn’t so try on all and you may fall in love with another dress

Accessorise – This can make the dress look totally different, adding a beaded jacket or belt here or there can turn it into the one J

Wedding dresses tend to be a size smaller – We all go into our appointments wanting to be slimmer than we are so don’t get yourself upset when it’s a snug fit or a size bigger!

Do your research – Head out to those shops that stock the styles that you like, no time for wasted trips!

Don’t be disappointed when you can’t find the one from Pinterest – Sometimes they just don’t exist!!

Now time to get organised and re run through my spreadsheets and lists. I have a crafting weekend in store with a friend getting married 2 weeks before us (boys on the stag!!) checklist to complete…
