We are half way through he week already, I hope it’s turning into a good one for you and I hope the wind has died down where you are! What was that all about yesterday, not exactly summer like! Roll on the good weather. Today I am bringing you a gorgeous winter wedding full of rustic charm mixed with elegant lux details. A truly stunning intimate wedding where the guests where really looked after with a morning boat trip, a 5 course dinner, amazing cakes and wonderful entertainment. Rowena and Richard really thought about each and every element of their wedding which resulted in a beautiful day with stunning details and amazing flowers. Just gorgeous photography from Tiree Dawson Photography

‘A weekend of celebration with a small group of close friends and family in beautiful surroundings. A real ‘Lake District’ wedding, from an early morning boat trip on Windermere in the warm winter sun, to roaring log fires and snow tipped in the afternoon.’

Rowena and Richard were married on 17th January 2015 at Merewood Country House Hotel. ‘We spent Christmas at the hotel when we first got together and had lovely memories of the place. We had 32 close family and friends guest wise at our wedding. It took a nail biting 5 months to plan the wedding.’

How they met
It was a holiday romance in Turkey! 16 years and a little boy later, we decided to get our act together!

The Proposal
Richard proposed on the Rialto Bridge in Venice – we were there for a friends wedding and the morning of the wedding Richard proposed. We kept it a secret from the wedding party for two days – but we couldn’t stop grinning.

How did you allocate your budget
We had friends coming from far and wide (from Winchester to Belfast to Qatar) so wanted to make it a full weekend that everyone could enjoy. Most of the budget was spent on entertaining our guests, including a lovely 3 course pre-wedding meal at a local restaurant the night before, a boat trip in the morning, the accommodation for everyone on the night of the wedding and entertainment including a casino, a singer and a sweet shop

How did you choose your photographer
We chose Tiree Dawson after recommendation from the hotel and from seeing her amazing work on her website

The Dress
Dress was bought ‘off the shelf’ from Monsoon but had a vintage feel. Shoes by Rachel Simpson, bracelet and earrings were high street again – by Accessorize! And a vintage necklace.

The Suit and Bridesmaids
Suit was bought ‘off the shelf’ from Next.

Theme or Colour Scheme
The theme was ‘winter woodland’ with pinks, greens, golds and coppers. There were beautiful floral table displays with hanging glass lanterns; moss and jam jars with candles as decoration and we even used logs as stands for our wedding cake pops

Flowers
Succulents, eucalyptus, white and pale pink roses, gypsophelia, stocks

Decoration
Oversized balloons at the foot of the grand staircase in the entrance hall, paper birds, various decorated jam jars, milk bottles, teapots full of flowers and tied with lace and ribbon. Paper pom poms and copper tea light holders. Pine cones, wooden stars, fairly lights and lots of moss

Food
A truly amazing 5 course meal by Merewood Country House Hotel. Everyone commented on the quality of the food – it was exquisite

Wedding Cake
50 individual pink and green cake pops and also pink and green iced cupcakes, with a light dusting of glitter, served in antique cups and saucers.

Entertainment
A pre-wedding 3 course meal and the lovely Lamplighter Dining Room the night before the wedding; a morning boat trip on Lake Windermere on the morning of the wedding with bucks fizz; a sweet shop for people to pick’n’mix; a casino, singer and music in the evening

Personal or Handmade Touches
As Rowena is a graphic designer, all the wedding stationary was personally made, from invites to table plans. The venue was decorated with candles, oversized balloons filled with feathers and tied with hand made ribbon tassels, paper birds and lanterns made from jam jars and old milk bottles that we had sourced and decorated. We made the cake stands for the cake pops from recycled wooden logs and we even made our own DJ-free disco with our own Spotify playlist

Special Moments
The boat trip the morning of the wedding was truly memorable, and the snow fall on the morning after the wedding – it was the final ingredient that truly made it a true ‘Lake District’ winter wedding

Advice to other couples
Try not to get too caught up in the wedding frenzy and overspend your budget – very easily done and almost inevitable, but try to keep a reign on it! And most of all remember to enjoy it – don’t forget that the day should be about you and your partner

Biggest surprise
How smoothly everything went (you always assume something is going to go wrong but thankfully it didn’t). Also how quickly it went – after months of planning it is over in the blink of an eye
