I have another wonderful wedding for you today, a vintage inspired day, with lots of rustic touches and a stack of homemade details. So many things were DIY projects made by the bride and groom, the bride even made her own wedding dress! It’s the venue that really struck me though, as it is set in a railway museum, which offers up the most amazing backdrop for this splendid wedding day. With old trains, old train bits and bobs and with the whole venue steeped in history, the vintage touches that Laura and Mathew bring in really match their day perfectly! This wedding is full of character and personality and I just love it, I’m sure you will to. Big thanks to Rebecca Prigmore Photography for the images.
Laura and Mathew were married on 14th June 2014 at Colchester Town Hall then onto a reception at The East Anglian Railway Museum. ‘We wanted somewhere that wasn’t a standard ‘package deal’ -When we were looking around, we saw lots of lovely venues but they all came with a list of limitations and a hefty price tag. So we started looking at venue spaces rather than wedding venues. We had spotted the museum in a local magazine and a friend of a friend had used it too. When we went to visit the museum, we knew it was a very DIY affair….but nothing after that compared to having a vintage train carriage in the room. We had 75 guests and it took about 1 year to plan’
How they met
We met in 2005 being fresh university students and housemates in Chislehurst, Kent (With the theory Essex kids should stick together) We became a couple in 2007, and finished our last year of Uni in 2008. Once back home in Essex we got bored of living apart so moved into our lovely little house in Chelmsford in 2010.
The Proposal
Mat proposed on our shared birthday (Mat is exactly a year older than Laura) on the 14th January 2012. He dragged me out for breakfast, meanwhile my future bridesmaid sneaked into our house and set up a lovely champagne and roses scene in the living room ready for Mat to pop the question – I had to ask him if he was sure about 3 times before I believed it!
How did you allocate your budget
We spent the main chunks of our budget on things that would create a great party for our guests like food, drink and entertainment. After that we decided the most import aspect for us were things that would last after our wedding day like photography and our wedding rings.
How did you choose your photographer
We met Rebecca at a vintage wedding fair – her branding, and the examples she had, really stood out to us. It was really refreshing to find someone who was as excited about the Railway museum as we were (others were very confused by the prospect!) and after we had an Engagment shoot with her we felt confident she would capture our day amazingly – which you can see she did!
The Dress
Being very picky everything I tried on I wanted to change 10 things to make it perfect! So, I brushed the cobwebs off my sewing machine and dressmaking skills (I did a degree in Fashion) and decided to make my own dress! Inspired by my favorite dream dresses and meaning I could use silks and beautiful lace that would have been way out of my budget otherwise.
The Suit and Bridesmaids
The Groom and groomsmen wore suits from Next – we wanted something they could all wear again. The bridesmaid dresses were from TOPSHOP, I had my heart set on a duck egg/aqua colour and spotted them by chance! I bought the girls matching necklaces from etsy as bridesmaid gifts and Mat bought the boys pocket watches to go with the suits.
Theme or Colour Scheme
We pulled the blue from the bridesmade dresses with peach, grey and white for a colour story. Our venue was so interesting we tired to complement rather that run away with a whole train theme!
Flowers
Mats Aunt pulled together beautiful arrangements and bouquets based around peach avalanche roses and white peonies with grey tones using dusty miller shrubs and eucalyptus
Decoration
We kept it simple to let the venue speak for itself and show all the details of the goods shed. Mat and his dad hand-made giant illuminated letters of our initials. For table decorations we painted wooden crates in the same duck egg blue with flowers inside and stencilled table numbers on them.
Food
Family style dining BBQ menu so there was lots of choice to keep everyone happy.
Wedding Cake
Rather than just the one cake, we decided to have a table of cakes. Nearly all handmade, including the cake we cut made by Laura’s mum.
Entertainment
We had a live band playing covers, and they also played our first dance song.
Buy or DIY your Stationery
We wanted to put our own little mark on the stationary so we designed everything ourselves (with a little help of our old uni housemate who works in graphic design to check them over).
Personal or Handmade Touches
The only thing we didn’t make was the tables and chairs! We made the centrepieces, table plans, all the stationary, the illuminated letters, the boys ties and pocket squares, and of course the wedding dress! When entering the shed we had a table with framed photographs of our parents and grandparents on their wedding day.
Special Moments
All the speeches, especially the best mens. More of a show than a speech.
Advice to other couples
The most important thing to remember is that the day is about the two of you – make sure you steal some time together before it rushes by. Also that the details matter, it will make for a cleaner and more considered style to your day.
Biggest surprise
Mine would be The adoption agreement that Mat’s best men made me sign to promise to look after him. Mat’s is the first time he saw me in my wedding dress walking down the aisle.

Beautiful colours, beautiful detailing all beautifully put together. It just goes to show that it is the sense of style not the amount of money you spend that makes a wedding look a million $$.
