The History of Sandon Hall

‘There is always something romantic about a place immersed in history, and Sandon Hall won’t disappoint you. From the ancient library to the elegant conservatory, each room has its own unique features and touch of style.
The fascinating history behind the mansion can be traced back as far as 1339 when by marriage ‘The Manor of Sandon’ came to Thomas Erdeswicke. In 1776 the house was bought by Nathaniel Ryder, 1st Baron Harrowby, who retained the renowned architect Samuel Wyatt to carry out extensive extensions and improvements.’

‘The mansion was then severely damaged by a fire in 1848, when a workman working on the roof left a torch lit which set the Hall alight. Although the blaze spread slowly and many interior items were saved, the structure of the hall had to be rebuilt. Designed in the neo-Jacobean style, the house was completed in 1848 by the famous architect William Burn under instruction from Dudley Ryder, 2nd Earl of Harrowby.
All these events have interestingly shaped Sandon Hall, which is a magnificent grade 2 listed building in the county of Staffordshire. The mansion is still a family home, but since 1994 it has been open to weddings, events and function.’
