Boho Loves: Silver Sixpence Films – Cinematic and Personal Wedding Films

Silver Sixpence Films

I am a strong believer of getting the right photographer for your wedding, spending as much as you can to make sure your memories are captured perfectly. Well the same is true for wedding films. Wedding films have become more and more popular as I have been in the wedding industry, which is great to see. The quality has become a whole lot better and film making within weddings is now seen as an art form.  I had a film made for my wedding but it was a homemade one that one of the guests put together. One of my big regrets of my wedding is that we didn’t have a professional film made, as I know I would be watching it over and over again if I had.
With that in mind I would like to introduce you to a wonderful wedding film company, Silver Sixpence Films. Silver Sixpence Films are run by Ed and Penny Hall, who specialise in Cinematic and personal wedding films. Having both worked in the film industry, with films such as Happy Potter and Skyfall under their belts, you know you are in good hands if you book them for your wedding. silver-six-logo

‘We are a dedicated team creating cinematic and personal wedding films that draw upon over 10 years experience and expertise making wedding films. Having worked in the film and TV industries alongside our videography work, we have a number of high profile credits and our career history includes working for the BBC and on films such as Harry Potter, and Skyfall. Our experience working in these industries has helped us to mould and shape our style and the ‘look’ of our films which we feel reflects everything we love about cinema and film craft techniques.’

I’ll pass you over to Ed and Penny………..

What made you start your business?
We have always loved weddings and having such a varied experience in production (Penny) and filming and editing (Ed), we make a great team. Ed has always been asked to film and edit weddings for friends and family and it was beginning to get more and more popular. We tried out different styles of filming and realized that we could make really beautiful non-linear wedding films that truly capture the emotion of the day, and that we loved doing it. We set up Silver Sixpence Films and we haven’t looked back! The film industry is an exciting and fast moving world, but running Silver Sixpence Films, gives us the opportunity to live a more family friendly life, and do what we love most, which is making films.

Silver Sixpence Films

When did you start?
We started trading as Silver Sixpence Films in 2013, so we a relatively ‘young’ company but we have been so busy since we set up, and love that the majority of our work comes from work of mouth, which is the best compliment you can get!

Where are you based?
Working for ourselves meant that we could finally move ‘home’ which is in East Yorkshire, so we are based there. We still work lots in the South East though and cover all over the UK making wedding films, and can travel abroad too.

What sort of geographical area do you cover?
We can cover all over the UK and destination weddings too.

What were you doing before?
As mentioned before, we had a varied career in the film industry. Penny started out as a runner for the BBC and worked her way up to eventually working on 3 Harry Potter films as the directors assistant, and then on to be a independent Producer. I have worked as an editor for over 10 years on various films, such as Terry Gilliams, The Imaginarium of Dr Parnassus, Disney’s, Prince of Persia, and John Carter, and more recently, Skyfall and Edge of Tomorrow. We feel that working in such a high-pressured industry has really shaped us both to be extremely hard working and disciplined in our respective crafts.

How would you describe your style?
We pride ourselves in being able to draw up on a very cinematic style. We try to make all our films bespoke to each couple and work in a very reportage way. We don’t use templates or set up shots, we work very organically and capture the day as it happens. I would say that we take inspiration from vintage film, but with a whimsical, and contemporary twist.

What is your biggest achievement so far?
Our big move to Yorkshire and setting up the company was always a big risk, but we have managed to have a really successful first year and have been fully booked all Summer and are getting booked up for the Winter now too and next year is looking very busy, so we are delighted that our clients love our films and are recommending us to their friends and family. We feel really proud and happy!

What makes you different to your competitors?
I would say that our style speaks to a certain type of Bride and I think that we are priced well for what we deliver. We produce extremely high quality films and are very experienced. Ed is a professional editor and has worked with some of the worlds best known directors, so he really knows his stuff! We are really happy to go with whatever our clients want too, so can be very flexible. I also think we are different because we are very discreet on the wedding day and get a lot of compliments from photographers too who find us very easy to work with. We try to blend in as much as possible, and would never make a clients wedding day about making the film, the film is about the wedding day.

What do you enjoy most about your job?
We both love meeting our clients and making their vision come true. We capture one of (if not the most) special days of their lives and those memories will be able to be re-lived for the rest of their lives. We love that that is our job and we can enrich their marriage in that way.

What sort of couple do you think you attract?
I think we attract easy going couples who have a relaxed and informal approach to their wedding days. We get a lot of country / farm weddings and Brides and Grooms who enjoy the out doors and have interesting details to their days.

What would be your ideal wedding to work on?
We love weddings where there are lots of fun details and activities to capture, so themed weddings are always fun! Ed is really good at working with Visual Effects too and we would love a Star Wars themed wedding or something really out there! Evening celebrations with fireworks / lantern launch would be fun.

Can you give me some information on your pricing structure?
We cater for all budgets and can make a short film trailer for as little as £695. Our pricing structure reflects the length of time filming on the wedding day, and then the length of film wanted. Our most expensive package includes filming from the brides preparations right through to the evening celebrations, and a 30 minute film, plus we add on the full versions of the ceremony and speeches.

What is your ideal way to spend a day off?
Together with our lovely 2 year old daughter! She’s brilliant, but she doesn’t like watching wedding films! Ha!

What can you never leave the house without?
Ed – his GH4 – which is a 4K camera! Penny – my note book, for writing lists…. Oh so many lists.

    Hi!
Really not sure how to word this.

BUT – Me and my girlfriend are getting married on the 1st Aug 2015 and we are looking at wedding videographers, with a unique, ‘hippy’ style. Our wedding is going to be an outside wedding and may be a little different to the norm.

Can you advise on prices and availability please.

How would you describe your style?

    Kind regards

    Jimmy
