Ana & Prindy’s Eccentric, Colourful, Ibiza Wedding. By Gypsy Westwood

With summer in full swing, this was the perfect wedding to share with you today. A celebration on the island of Ibiza, filled with colourful guests and colourful touches like the bride’s flowers, the groom’s unique feather buttonhole and the complimentary pastel, paper parasols for when the island sun got too hot. I love the truly relaxed nature of this wedding between Ana and Prindy. There’s no airs and graces, just a gathering of very, very happy family and friends celebrating the love of two gorgeous people. Gypsy Westwood has captured this wedding perfectly and I can smell the flowers, taste the food and feel the love, just by looking at them!

‘It was an exploration of love in the air and we felt like the luckiest two people in the world. A weird and wonderful Almodovar Film, full of eccentric, colourful, loving and beautiful beings spoiling us rotten.’

Ana and Prindy were married on 18th of October at Can Gall, a gorgeous Spanish country house in San Joan, Ibiza. “It had to be Ibiza, we were “just” going to do a simple register office in London to begin with but with having the most magical island on our doorstep it seemed a shame not to share our day with our loved ones before trying our future luck in Prindy’s home town of Melbourne, Australia.” Ana and Prindy organised their wedding for 85 special guests in just 3 months!

How they met
If I remember right we met 2004, a new season in Ibiza was about to start and I had come back from my studies in London to work for Cardamom Club, now called Cardamom Events. He had just started and already moved in to the room I rented in the same building where we worked so I had to move in to an other room opposite him. Craig our friend but at the time boss was keen to see us together but nothing sparked off until a few years ago. I had missed a couple of seasons due to University and when I came back something was different between us. His eyes lingered for far longer than I had noticed before and suddenly when he brushed past I got the butterflies, at first I ignored it in fear of complications at work and loosing a good friend but after being a part over the winter the inevitable happened when we met up for the new season and a few months later our friend Craig announced our coupling on a Monday morning meeting to our colleges. It was a beautiful reaction, fanfares and the word “finally” was mentioned a lot, very sweet.

The proposal
Ha,ha,ha……well, it wasn’t very clear but he did ask me several times, once in his sleep but I didn’t take it seriously as we only been a couple for a few months by then. Then a year passed and he came home from work one day and said: – I think we should get married in Ibiza!! Yeah, there wasn’t a traditional proposal but then we are not a traditional kind of couple and I knew how much he wanted it so that’s all that mattered.

How did you allocate your budget?
We have a big group of friends/ family so it was very hard for us to keep the numbers down. With only three months of saving we couldn’t have done it if it wasn’t for everyone pitching in offering their help. We both have worked for Cardamom Events for many years so many colleagues turned in to friends over the years and helped us with sound, lighting and venue. Prindy who has been Cardamom’s chef all these years prepared the food and me being the in-house stylist it only came natural for me to stand for the decor. With spending around the same amount on venue and food the decor was kept to minimal by me re-cycling old glass yoghurt pots and borrowing of pots and frames to give it that personal touch. On the day we all pitched in to make it happen, it was like a huge messy family dinner. We where super lucky with everyone pulling out the amazing favours.

Why did you choose your photographer?
It just had to be Gypsy Westwood, not only because she is an amazing photographer but she is a family friend and I don’t think no one else could have captured our families and us so well, she has an amazing knack of being invisible and capture the true feeling of the day. I can not thank her enough, it is an invaluable memory we look forward to show my grand kids one day. Like that wasn’t enough, we had Gypsy’s second talented photographer (also a friend) Emma Saunders adding her images to our amazing wedding album.

The dress and accessories
The dress was designed by me and then made by my gorgeous and talented mother, with a little last minute help from little sisters and friends. I alternate my freelance styling work with my jewellery company under my name Ana Ostrom so the necklace is from my Punk Romance collection and my bangles was a gift from my mother, bought and worn by her in her young years living in New York. The button holes I made out of colourful feathers and Mexican ribbon. Prindy’s shirt printed with little colourful sparrows gave me the inspiration, our budget wasn’t very big so it also was a way to save on the cost of flowers and a nice little gift to the best men and officiator/ friend Craig who finally saw his wish of us getting together finalised. My shoes where handmade Spanish espadrilles from Gaimo, just want all their shoes so it was hard to choose!

The suit and bridesmaids
Prindy does not feel comfortable in a suit plus we felt it would be too formal, we where lucky with the weather so often a suit in the Ibiza sun is just too hot. We found his shirt in his favourite shop in Ibiza town, Pimp Ibiza. It worked well with our colourful relaxed theme and the polka dot short’s I found on my trip to London for my hen party. The hat was a wedding gift from me to him. When it came to the bridesmaids dresses we had a minor disaster, I suggested floaty flowery summer dress from Asos and because the girls live in either Uk or Sweden it was the only way of getting them the right size etc. but when one of the girls came a few days before the wedding and showed me the dress I was mortified! It was the most un-flattering flowery potato sack of a dress I had ever seen……..absolutely not good enough for my precious gorgeous girls so thanks to my dear friend Ruth going on a stress full hunt after 8 same colour dresses in Ibiza town I thinks she did a pretty amazing job by finding them for only 7 euros each!! I have no idea where from and I don’t think she can remember more than being extremely determined.

The theme
On our invitation we asked people to embrace colour and comfort so we didn’t have a specific colour dominating except for my girls wearing a variation of blue/ teal coloured dresses.

The flowers
White roses and my favourite flower, lilies of the valley. The brief for my bouquet was colourful and wild but for some reason that didn’t happen so I pinched some pink bougainvillea to give it some colour, it worked really well as I had some in my hair as well. This flower grows in Prindy’s hometown Melbourne and in our second home Ibiza so what could be more appropriate!?
On the morning of the wedding I bought sunflowers and local field flowers from my favourite local farm shop in Ibiza, on the road from St: Eulalia to Ibiza town.

The decoration
– I wanted the decor to represent both of us equally so my love for colour and Prindy’s love for plants came together through me drawing inspiration from Mexican culture, hence having colours, cactuses and a pinata after dinner! Because of the love my husband has for gardening we also decided to have herbs and field flowers on the table, I distressed the terracotta pots with white paint thinned out with turpentine and mixed it up with cups, little tin buckets and colourful Moroccan glasses filled with rural field flowers.
– The place cards where mini envelopes filled with a mix of seeds for the guests to plant and cherish in memory of our love and gratefulness we feel to have them in our lives. Hopefully they will bring them joy long after our magical day!
– I also painted several little cute glass pots and bottles I get my local favourite yoghurt in. Mum and I had a lot of yoghurt running up to the wedding, actually one of the few things I could eat due to the Ibiza heat and all my post wedding nerves!
– I “marble” painted the bottom of them by dripping different colour nail varnish in to water, then dipping them in and wha’la!…….it sticks to the glass and gave it gave a lovely warm colourful tint with a tea-light inside. We also made signs out of weathered wood I found outside work, broken pallets we couldn’t use anymore. With me being half Swedish, half Spanish ……naturally we had to have our bride and groom sign written in Spanish and some traditional Swedish mini wooden horses on the head table.

The food and wedding cake
Our dear friend and talented chef Ali was adamant to make us fish tacos for starters and because many of us where vegetarian, for the main we had three different Thai curries to choose from. It was an intimate table buffet with bowels and drinks being passed to each other. The food was prepared by Prindy and served by friends all pitching in with serving and cooking.
We had three wedding cakes made by my beautiful husband Prindy! One coconut and raspberry, second chocolate cheese cake and an other lemon drizzle scrumptiousness! Not to forget my baby sisters yummy Swedish cinnamon buns.

The entertainment
One of Prindy’s best men Denver Knutson played intimate songs on his acoustic guitar pre the ceremony and after the ceremony we were blessed having Natalie Motos entertaining our guests while Gypsy Westwood took us aside for some shots, I was a whole hour late due to dress trouble so I’m very impressed she managed to get those gorgeous images of us in the field. Not to mention trying to reign in our rurally families!

Buy or DIY your Stationery?
DIY comes natural to me thanks to it being my profession so I guess we where lucky not having to spend hardly any money on our stationary, nor decor. I do also feel a certain obligation to keep our beautiful planet for our next generation so re-cycling is not only necessary but fun!

Personal or handmade touches
I did all the signs, pots and stationery. Thankfully I love this kind of work, if I had more time and not been working full time during those three months I would have easily gone overboard. I had so much fun painting frames, sticking old family photos in and preparing for the memory lane table where we had a frame filled with questions for the guests to fill out our guest book with, a great way to help inspiring some funny answers!
Little feather button holes for the best men and little initial bracelets for the bridesmaids.

Special moments
There was so many but I have to say it was the ceremony, when we read out our personal vows the air was filled with magic that is impossible to explain in words. We didn’t even manage to walk down the aisle together, everyone where just so eager to congratulate us and we where showered with unforgettable love and joy.

Advice to other couples
All I can say is stay focused when doing the planning and remember what really matters to you, no matter how much you plan nothing can really prepare you for the day’s little surprises but these moment’s is what makes your day in to your day. In my opinion perfection can easily become a bit boring and rigid. Off course it was an important day for us but it’s only one day out of hopefully a long and happy marriage and that is what really matters in the end of the day so my tip is when things go wrong, ask yourself – Does it really matter? ……and just enjoy, the day goes way too fast!!

Biggest surprise
That would have to be that my dress was not finished in time for the wedding!!! My mother is a perfectionist and despite constant precaution from my sisters that is was perfect, my mum kept doting on it till the last minute. It was a moment of panic but everyone pulled together and Gypsy’s lovely mother Jenny Westwood and my friend/ stylist (real name) Diva sowed me in to the dress at the venue…….phew!
