Today’s wedding is a bit of a personal one for me for two reasons. One...
Today I would like to introduce you to Jean-Marc from 1 Chapter Photography. Jean-Marc is originally from France but moved to London in 2009, he has been a professional wedding photographer for just over a year now. With a background in street photography his style is very much reportage based and he describes it as ‘spontaneous, unexpected, funny and true’. To find out more about the man behind the lens I asked Jean-Marc a few questions.
How long have you been taking photos for?
My Dad always had a camera with him, shouting at us CHEESE every time he wanted to take a picture… I guess that is where it is coming from and how I started carrying a camera with me at all times. In 2009/2010 I did various photography courses to get more skills and knowledge as I trained on my own – mostly autodidact!
When did you start your photography business and what made you start?
I started my business in Jan 2013 so yes it is quite fresh!!!! Photography is really what I love to do and life is too short to put the passion aside so I decided to jump in and many couples trusted me last year!!!!
Where are you based?
I’m London based but I will travel across the globe to capture some lovely memories
How would you describe your style?
Spontaneous, unexpected, funny, true, will describe the type of photographs I love to take. I consider myself as a lifestyle photographer and I try to take the things as they are. I try to hide with the guests, being as discret as possible to capture natural moments.
What is your favorite bit of technical kit?
Playing with the sun to create a hallow around the couple
What makes you different to your competitors?
We are all different I guess. My background is Street Photography where I focused a lot on little details and life as it is…I apply it a lot to my reportage and in addition I spend time on editing to add something specific to the reportage, my touch blended with the atmosphere during the Big Day and the personality of the couple!
What do you enjoy most about your job?
Being a witness of these wonderful and joyful moments in life
What is your biggest achievement so far?
I had various features this year which I’m very proud of for my first year!!! But my biggest achievement is the trust that my clients had in me. I’m new to the Wedding Industry and they trust me for providing what will remain from their Big Day…the photography!!!
What sort of couple do you think you attract?
I don’t know if I attract a specific sort of couple. I had some very different weddings but they all wanted a reportage with a natural feel, remembering their Bid Day as it was!
What would be your ideal wedding to work on?
A sunny british day, a colourful DIY wedding with a lot of details in a farm in the middle of a poppy field, an arty/alternative/stylish/relaxed couple, not too many guests to be able to photograph all of them without them noticing it, a day after session in the woods close to a river…
Which celeb would you like to photograph?
I hesitate between Pharrell Williams and P!NK…Pharrell Williams is very stylish and a bit hedgy so I presume his wedding could be quite nice. P!NK is very stunning and totally crazy, I’m sure her wedding would be very Rock n’ Roll!!!!!
Who is your favorite photographer and why?
Jerry Uelsmann is my favorite photographer. His photographs and photomontages are just amazing. His vision and creativity are surreal and quite unique, I really love his work!!!!
What in your opinion makes the perfect photo?
A true moment makes the perfect picture. A moment “sur le vif” as we say in French and that is what I’m aiming at during all the weddings I photograph, capturing the day as it is!
What is your favorite photo that you have taken?
I don’t really have a favorite photo…it is quite difficult to pick as it is not just the quality of the photo that will make the difference but the moment I have captured and I have witnessed loads of lovely ones!!!! There are phases of the wedding that I love the most. The bridal preparation: the bride is very thoughtful, her bridesmaids and her mum are always very emotional at this point especially when she put on her wonderful dress!!!! The vows, the bride and groom are expressing their love, with stars and some tears in the eyes, their looks are so intense…it is just WOW! When the ceremony is finished and the couple is exiting the town hall/church, everyone is joyful putting on some impressive smile and the party gets started. The couple shoot as it is much more relaxed and a lot of FUN!
I have photographed a couple who was about to celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary and it was one of my favorite shooting. You could sense their love and the way they were with each other, it felt like if they were back in their twenties!!!!
What advice would you give couples when choosing their wedding photographer?
Pick a photographer that matches your style and don’t take the easy choice. Photographs are what will stay from your Wedding Day so take your time and budget it!
Can you give me some information on your pricing structure?
My services start at £750 for a reportage from the bridal preparation to the cocktail but I can customize it so that it suits the needs of the couple.
What is your ideal way to spend a day off?
To spend it with my lovely wife!
What can you never leave the house without?
A camera as I’m always looking for unexpected things to capture. My Ipod, I’m always in a good mood when I’m listening to some nice tunes. And a watch, I like the way a watch can finish your outfit…this nice little detail!
What would you do if you won the lottery?
I will share it with my family!!!! Then I would travel around the world, there are some very interesting and exciting places in the world that I would love to visit and learn a lot from the locals. And finally, do some donations to charities especially some to increase the awareness of Deaf people and Sign Language. I love this language and I’m learning it but I find is not very accessible to everyone.
If you weren’t running your business, what would you be doing?
I’m graduated from a Business School so I think that I would probably be a marketing consultant
