DIY Tutorial: Peacock & Diamanté Hair Accessory

DIY Tutorial

Today I’m delighted to welcome back Laura Strutt to the Blog. I featured Laura on the Blog last week when she talked about her 10 Tips for a Stress-Free DIY Wedding . Laura is the author of the Haynes DIY Wedding Manual and is a real-life DIY bride. As well as working with Haynes on this wonderful hard back book, Laura also writes her own Blog Made Peachy, so she is a DIY expert and the perfect match for Boho Weddings. Today she is showing us how to make these gorgeous Peacock & Diamanté Hair Accessories

Peacock Hair accessory

Peacock feathers and diamontes are the perfect pairing, whether you’re having a vintage themed wedding, or are going all out glam on your big day! This simple and stylish hair accessory can be easily made in 10 minutes – ideal if you are accessorising a tribe of bridesmaids or are looking for the perfect finishing touch to add to your own wedding day look.

STEP 1)  Trim the feather
Using the scissors, carefully trim down the feather. Begin by snipping off the length, then work carefully around the peacock eye to neaten the shape.

STEP 2)  Trim the felt
Using the shaped peacock feather as a guide, use the scissors to trim down the felt. This will be applied to the back of the feather to give support, and is barely seen on the finished piece, be sure to trim the upper edge so that it sits lower than the upper tips of the feather.

STEP 3)  Secure the felt to the feather
Spread a few small dabs of glue to the surface of the trimmed felt and carefully align the feather on top. Press gently in place ensuring that the feather is smooth and flat. Set aside to dry fully.

STEP 4)  Stitch on the embellishments
Decide on the position of the diamonte buttons and sew-on charms at the lower edge of the feather. Using the needle and thread, carefully stitch in place with small neat hand stitched, ensuring that you work the stitches through both the feather and the felt, until each is fully secured.

STEP 5)  Secure the feather to the comb
Position the feather on one side of the upper section of the hair comb, so that it sits up from the comb at a slight angle. Apply a small dab of glue to the upper section of the comb and secure the felt-backed feather to the comb. Set aside to fully dry to finish.

  • Handy Tip – For a more professional finish, work with small dabs of glue at a time. You can always reapply a little more at each stage if needed. Applying the glue too generously might result in blobs of dried glue being visible on the finished piece and can ruin the look of the hair accessory.
