Honeymoon Ideas – Alternative Honeymoons 4 Unconventional Destinations

It’s been a while since we discussed Honeymoons on the Blog, but with the weather turning cold and winter well and truly on its way, now is the perfect time to start thinking of holidays and that all important Honeymoon. You may still want a warm and sunny break away but may not want the normal beach resort. Personally I like to go on holiday and do stuff, don’t get me wrong I love a lounge by the pool, but not all day every day, my ginger hair and freckles don’t appreciate the sunshine 24/7, so if you are anything like me you will be looking for a honeymoon with lots to do, places to go and stuff to visit.

So today I have enlisted Giorgia from The Co-operative Travel to help us out with 4 fab ideas for your alternative honeymoon.

Honeymoon Ideas Unconventional Destinations

I’ll pass the Blog over to Giorgia…….

A honeymoon these days isn’t just a week’s worth of post-nuptials in the Maldives, it’s a journey of discovery and adventure (although the Maldives do look quite nice). Forget the typical romantic hotspots; you want your honeymoon to be different and above all, memorable.
It’s all too easy to settle for a mediocre package holiday, what with all the work of organising the wedding and preparing for your future married life. But you can still find all inclusive holidays to some more obscure destinations, and the extra searching will be worth it in the long run. Here are four ideas that might inspire you to do something different with your honeymoon.

Goa

Goa

Goa is known for its wide sandy beaches and electric nightlife and is quickly becoming very popular with newlyweds across the globe. It’s the ideal destination for young couples seeking a mix of relaxation and activity, with plenty of water sports as well as fine Indian dining waiting to be discovered.
Candolim Village is a small resort which offers a fine beach where you can enjoy a cooling drink from one of a number of improvised bars constructed with palm fronds, or embark upon a fascinating sightseeing tour around the bay and up to the spectacular Portuguese Fort Aguada. Hotels here are reasonably priced or you can hire a studio apartment with a maid for a bit of extra luxury.
North to South, Goa’s beaches are like no other. From the sleepy cove of Baga to the flea market and beach parties on Arjuna, there is a beach to suit everyone’s tastes. In the North is the old city of Goa, and to the South you’ll notice more of a Portuguese influence in the architecture.

Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka is one of the most beautiful honeymoon destinations in the world. With an immense profusion of wildlife, ancient culture and colonial monuments you’re sure never to forget a romantic getaway on this magical island.
Sri Lanka caters for every budget: rent a beach hut on Arugam Bay and watch the surfers carving along the steady onset of waves, or stay in a colonial mansion in the mountain town of Kandy and get a chance to see the famous casket said to hold the Buddha’s tooth. And then there’s Beruwela, an attractive seaside destination with intimate beaches and a good selection of boutique hotels and studio apartments.
If you and your partner are serious foodies, Sri Lanka is definitely the destination for you. With deep-fried street snacks, fresh fish curries and mouth-watering exotic fruit, there won’t be a day when you miss the taste of home. Be warned – you may end up staying.

Hong Kong

Hong Kong

For a less traditionalist honeymoon, Hong Kong is a surprisingly strong contender. Begin your journey in a 5-star hotel in the effervescent capital city, where there are all the conveniences and attractions of a cosmopolitan metropolis and more.
Spend a day exploring the many markets and come away with some trinkets or other items for your new married life. Eat at one of thousands of contemporary and traditional restaurants before catching a romantic movie at Hong Kong’s 1950s-style drive-in cinema. You can listen to traditional Chinese music, take Tai Chi lessons from a local master, or just picnic in one of the many scrupulously well-designed parks and gardens.
For a break from the city, Hong Kong has some scenic national parks like Tai Lam and Sai Kung West Country Parks, as well as good beaches such as Hung ShingYeh on Lamma Island.

Thai Islands

Thailand

One of the more popular of the Thai Islands for weddings and honeymoons is Phuket (pronounced poo-ket), where vibrant parties in the Patong area contrast with serene intimate beaches in the North. In Phuket you can hire a modern glass-walled apartment with a private pool, or stay in a resort with more traditional Thai architecture. There are plenty of seaside restaurants and bars, and the warm seas offer some fantastic diving and snorkelling opportunities.
Alternatively, there’s a great range of luxury resorts and spas on KohSamui. With some of the best beaches in Thailand and numerous picturesque waterfalls to discover, it’s the perfect secluded getaway. You can even try your hand at the local sport of Samui football-golf.

A honeymoon is a unique moment of rest before embarking upon the journey of marriage. Make that moment memorable by doing something different, something extravagant.

So do any of those options appeal to you? I’d love to know what you have planned for your honeymoon. Are you going somewhere traditional or have you chosen something a bit more alternative?

Love that you included Hong Kong. A lot of people think a honeymoon has to be a little getaway but there’s nothing wrong with a little urban exploration instead!

These se like conventional honeymoons to me (except Hong Kong). What about exploring the lost city of Petra with nights under the stars at a Bedouin camp in Jordan. Walking the inca trail to see the sunrise over Petra in Peru. Volcanoes, whales and hot chocolate in Iceland, or closer to home a cottage on the whiskey trail in Scotland?
