Boho Loves: The Amazings – Craft Something You Love

The Amazings

Today I am bringing you something a little different with my Boho Loves feature, as today isn’t so much about weddings or a wedding supplier but instead it is all about getting your craft on and learning a new skill.

The Amazings started off as craft workshops where elders with skills such as knitting, mosaic making and quilt making passed on their skills to younger people looking to rekindle these skills. The workshops soon took off and now they have a huge selection of Craft workshops available on-line, and these are being added to every week.

I’ll pass the blog over to the Amazings to explain more………..

‘Fueled by the popularity of nostalgia, craft and make do and mend, the Amazings has attracted hundreds of people to the workshops. While the classes are given by the over 50s, most attendees tend to be young creatives eager to harness traditional skills that might otherwise disappear with time.
We champion craft and wisdom from elders with a lifetime of experience because society isn’t as good at passing down these skills through generations as we used to be. Our little company started because we wanted to fix this.’

Amazings Co-Founder Adil Abrar said: ‘There’s nothing better than learning from someone who has a lifetime of experience, sharing shortcuts that you won’t find in most books or websites, and dropping in little stories that make the learning experience really special. We’ve worked hard to replicate that amazing-ness so people can experience it online, all over the world’

We started in January 2012 and we are based in London but we are now online so anyone can access us. We started with live classes here in London but now we have customers from Europe, US & Canada, Asia and even Australia via our online classes.
There’s nothing better than learning from someone who has a lifetime of experience, sharing shortcuts that you won’t find in most books or websites, and dropping in little stories that make the learning experience really special. We’ve worked hard to replicate that amazing‐ness so people can experience it online, all over the world.

The online classes

There are over 200 real life workshops on offer from The Amazings.

Demand for the classes has far outstripped what the individual Amazings can provide, so in order to widen the availability of the courses, they will now be available through a digital platform.
Online classes will be offered in everything from knitting and sewing, to bookbinding and retro hair dos. They will consist of over 2 hours of video tutorials, commentary, teacher’s notes, and asking the teacher a question. Once enrolled, users will be able watch a class anywhere, anytime, and for as long as they like.

We’ve got 8 online classes on our website now, with 1 more to be rolled out every week throughout the year.
The classes are:

  • Make natural beauty products
  • Retro hair dos, demonstrating 3 different styles
  • Make a mosaic pot
  • Learn to patchwork quilt
  • Try altered books
  • Turn a man’s shirt into a summer dress
  • Create a silver metal clay butterfly pendant
  • Loom knit a woolly hat

So what do you think? I think it’s a great idea! Think how many skills you may have learnt from your mum or your Gran, now think of these skills being passed on via craft workshops.

I love this idea so much that I am sending Laura our very own DIY Guru off to film her own amazings video in a few weeks time. The video will be shown not only here but on the Amazings website, so keep an eye out for it.
