Saturday Cinema: Danielle & James’ Suffolk Wedding in Super 8 Cine Reportage

Happy Saturday to you and welcome along to another Saturday Cinema. Today I am in Oakham, Rutland at my last wedding of the year. It’s the wedding of Dee and Steven who I have been working with for the past 7 months. They are having a darling Buds of May themed wedding and if all goes to plan should be amazing. I’m a little sad that the season is over but I have to admit I am looking forward to getting my weekends back! This month in particular has been pretty mental so I’m looking forward to things being  a little less hectic! Plus in a weeks time I go on Holiday!!

On to today’s featured presentation which has been brought to you by Will at Cine Reportage who are based in Hove in Sussex. It’s the wedding of  Danielle & James who were married on 10th June at Hengrave Hall in Suffolk. The wedding is filmed in super 8 so it immediately brings with it a warm, vintage feel. My favourite parts are the look that James gives Danielle when she walks into the church, the dancing flower girls and the great soundtrack.

I asked Will what his favourite part of the wedding was: ‘It’s impossible to pick a favourite part of the day, Danielle had planned everything in exquisite detail – she’d put together a book that was overflowing with ideas and inspiration. Hengrave Hall is steeped in Tudor grandeur. I think Queen Elizabeth I stayed there – it’s that kind of place. It also has a beautiful and very useful chapel. It really helped that Danielle & James managed to pick a beautiful, sunny day which was like an island in a period of extreme sogginess!’

Why do you think a couple should hire a film maker for their wedding? ‘Film captures emotion and atmosphere in a different way to photos. Like a time-capsule, you can see not only how people looked, but their mannerisms and character.
I love watching my parent’s super 8 wedding film from the 1970s – it’s an amazing connection to times and people past.’

What do you think makes a good wedding video? ‘What makes a good video is totally subjective – choose a filmmaker who consistently makes films that you enjoy and I don’t think you can go too far wrong. Personally, I love working with and watching super 8 film so much more than video, it has a tactile warmth to it and adds a layer of timeless nostalgia to everything it records.’

We work in super 8 film, which is a magical medium – each moment is recorded as a strip of tiny, exquisite images. You can hold them in your hand and see them with the naked eye.
The results have a timeless, nostalgic feel.
It’s not the easiest format to work with, nor is it the cheapest, but it’s hopelessly romantic and therefore perfect for weddings.
We do our best to blend into the background – shooting reportage style. Our favourite shots are moments of raw emotion, which are better captured without the inhibition of posing for the camera.
