Honeymoon Ideas - Honeymoon in Mexico

Today we are talking Honeymoon ideas as I whisk you off to Mexico courtesy of Emma Gibbs from The Honeymoon Project . Emma is an expert in all thing Honeymoons so I have asked her to guest blog for me and talk us through some alternative ideas for you honeymoon. Today’s chosen destination is a Honeymoon in Mexico, but not your normal package deal, today we are going off the beaten track! So pack your suitcase and take a trip to somewhere very warm and sunny!

Mexico remains a very popular honeymoon destination – and with miles and miles of beautiful coastline, it’s not hard to see why. But step beyond the package holiday hotels that line the Riviera Maya and you’ll find so much more than just sun and sea to appeal – from fantastic food and vibrant markets to ancient civilisations and lush jungle. The Yucatan – the country’s southeastern peninsular that juts into the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea – is a particular delight to explore, and trips into the interior are easily combined with days at a more traditional resort on the beach; here’s just a handful of my favourite places to stay in the region.

Hotel Xixim, Celestún

If you want a beach hotel with a difference, head for this beautiful eco resort on the Yucatan’s wilder Gulf of Mexico coast. The beaches here have a wild, untamed beauty, and the area is particularly famous for being a breeding area for pink flamingoes. The resort itself is the epitome of laid back chic – think open-sided bungalows, balconies strung with hammocks, and swimming pools with the sound of the waves crashing in the distance.

Hacienda Uayamon, near Campeche

Scattered among the jungle in the Yucatan are a number of old haciendas – relics of the region’s colonial past. A number of these have now been converted into gorgeous small hotels, the highlight of which is Hacienda Uayamon, a beguiling mix of crumbling ruins and modern luxury hotel. Situated just a short distance from the paint-box coloured town of Campeche, it’s the ideal place to explore this beautiful, less-touristy part of the region, or to just kick back and relax for a few days.

Coqui Coqui, Valladolid

At first glance, Valladolid may not seem like much to write home about, but spend a few hours here and it’s hard not to be absolutely won over by its charms – not least because it feels little touched by tourism. One of the highlights of a visit here is Cenote Zaci – a cave-like natural pool that will undoubtedly be one of the most atmospheric swims you’ve ever had. Stay at the one-suite only Coqui Coqui, a beautiful combination of colonial chic and minimal style.

Hotel Julamis, Merida

Merida is the jewel in the Yucatan’s colonial crown, crammed full of colourful old buildings, and makes a great base from which to explore more of the region. Add to this a fascinating daily market and (free) musical events taking places in scenic plazas every day of the week, and it’s not hard to see why people fall in love with the city. The small and unpretentious Hotel Julamis boasts a fabulous rooftop terrace, and its individually decorated rooms are the most intimate and charming in town – perfect for honeymooners.
